In wondering why people label school clothes

Firstly, apart from pe day (mine only has one day a week), they dont take their clothes off usually, do they? I understand jumpers and coats but why the rest?

I think we have this

www.sharpie.co.uk/cdetail.php?cType=p&region=eu&catCode=7&Cat=&crumb=

We got it from our local newsagent. It should be ok to find locally if not you could buy a couple online, I would say worth the p&p cost to save hours and shelling out on extra uniform!

Talker2010 · 04/09/2011 21:31

I always assumed that it was so I could check I had the right child when I went to pick up

AryaStark · 04/09/2011 21:33

And because of this:

i did dds a couple of weeks before she went back to school, just got a normal bic looking pen but it came with the iron on pish, i just used the pen on the tags already in the clothes - most shops put name and class on the tag anyway - took me about 40 mins to do 5 skirts 5 shirts 2 polo shirts 2 cardis a jumper, gym kit, school bag, gym bag and pencil case... Grin good times..

I've always had my DC's stuff back pretty quickly if it's been labelled. But then my kids stuff is from Asda and Sainsburys. Whenever there is an appeal in the classroom window, the missing item is always from Next, Gap or, most memorably, Ralph Lauren. It seems the chance of getting kids clothes back is directly proportional to how cheap they are at our school Grin

AbbyLou · 04/09/2011 21:50

Not enough people do in my opinion. After every PE lesson in my class (Y1) there was always a pile of stuff left last year - even trousers FFS! I have had so many parents rant at me about lost jumpers and when asked do they have a name in, you can imagine what the answer is!!

pigletmania · 04/09/2011 21:56

At dd new school we have been told to label the school uniform, and not write it in incase it gets washed out. I can sympathise as dd loves the water tray and gets all wet so will have several changes of uniform in her bag. She is starting Foundation and has SN btw

privatename · 04/09/2011 22:00

i got a laundry pen from WH Smiths, cost just over a quid, wrote names straight onto the clothes (on the inside!) can't sew for toffee and so many kids would take me ages Grin

mummymccar · 04/09/2011 22:03

You just never know what is going to happen - I've seen children swapping clothes when playing games before (this was stopped obviously).

IndigoBell · 04/09/2011 22:05

I thought this thread was going to be:

Why label uniform - when they never bring the right clothes home anyway :)

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 04/09/2011 22:05

Last year the poor TA in class had to ask parents what colour tights their dd had worn to school that morning as she had problem after PE (only shoes and socks off!). One of the girls was adamant that the only tights left on the floor were not hers, she wasn't wearing that colour in the morning and didn't own any that colour! Everyone else was sure they had the correct tights (it mattered in a way that it can only ever matter to small girls Grin!)

I have dutifully labelled all the dd's uniform (but even after this I do draw the line at tights!) I also have 3dd's so just sew the surname in I'm not repeatedly sewing new names into the same clothes (like my DM used to!)

sjuperwolef · 04/09/2011 22:05

on dds first day of school last yr, she came out without her coat - 4 coats left in the cloakroom none of them with names on - dds included Blush she spent the whole of last yr in what could've been someone elses coat! forgot i named hers this yr but i got her a plain black duffel bloody gorgeous thing instead of the schools own.

Takitezee · 04/09/2011 22:06

Our primary school does PE at least three times a week so lots of potential for bringing home the wrong clothes. Unfortunately whenever this has been done the other swapee has never labeled their clothes and I have never had ours back despite being labeled.

In secondary school it hasn't happened so far, fingers crossed.

dirtydishesmakemesad · 04/09/2011 22:06

we lost a pair of shoes last year, dd took them off for PE and we never got them back. They had her name written inside in big black letters so i fail to see how any parent could have missed that when their child turned up at home but there you go. I label all of ours but that is the only thing we have lost so far.

queenmaeve · 04/09/2011 22:06

Because it cuts down on the amount of time us teachers spend looking for little Billy's whatever because his mum was too daft to put his name on it in the first place.

queenmaeve · 04/09/2011 22:09

Sorry i didnt word that properly but you know what I mean

exoticfruits · 04/09/2011 22:10

I bet they love you at school! Have you never seen a lost property box?

exoticfruits · 04/09/2011 22:10

After one day there will be lost property.

TheHumanCatapult · 04/09/2011 22:15

i do label dd first name only she is the only one in school .But if it is in class teacher never has a problem doe snot evne look at label for dd name .Her class is y3 and y4 .Dd is the only one with a jumper for 5-6 same for trosuers though she doe snot lose them now adays

TastyMuffins · 04/09/2011 22:19

YANBU, I fail to see the point here. DS is starting year 2, they don't wear uniform, PE is once a week if at any. Occasionally he'll come home without a glove or hat, maybe even a jumper. A stern word about how important it is to find it and bring it home each day and it's back the following day. Missing snack pot lids are another matter...

Fully named PE kit, including plimsolls in named bag was delivered to school on the first day in reception as requested. Said bag was never opened or used or ever seen again despite many requests to the teacher and checking lost property, I was occasionally offered any unclaimed items found in the classroom as alternatives.

If DS only wears cheap supermarket clothes that he won't fit into in 6 months time, in terms of time is money, labelling is pointless.

Of course I am right this minute labelling every item of clothing DS owns (including pants and socks) because I have signed my agreement with the school that says I will. Should have called him George and just bought all his clothes at Asda.

I love sewing name tapes on.

[weird emoticon]

moonbells · 04/09/2011 22:28

So, how do you label socks (and grey/black ones at that) ????

I am thoroughly fed up of sewing labels in. Most are just sewed at the ends (where the tag folds under itself) as poor DS has a rather long name. But at least we never have to worry about not having a tag for hanging things on pegs! Grin

mummymccar · 04/09/2011 22:30

Don't forget hats & gloves!
Do any other MNetters who do/have worked in a school ever have the extra child/extra item problem where there is a child missing a sock that just can't be found or worse, a sock missing a child that everyone denies is theirs? Drove me potty!
