A bit worried about DDs weight

OhdearNigel · 01/09/2011 13:52

DD is 19 months old, we weighed her last week at my MIL and she weighs 2 stone. This takes her I think onto the 91st centile.
She has always (on the rare occassions I had her weighed) been around the 50th centile and was on about 45 on her 1 year HV check.
She is very tall, taller than her boy cousin who is only 23 hours younger than her. She eats a varied and healthy diet, she has a few treats (eg a bourbon biscuit on wednesday afternoons when we go to the park) but on the whole eats lots of pulses, grains, pasta, fish, veggies and fruit. She also breastfeeds quite a lot
In the last few weeks I have really noticed how much bigger (not fatter, just bigger all over) she is than other children her age, we saw a lady who was at our original birth group yesterday and Kitty looks so much bigger and older than her son that I am starting to feel a bit worried. We were talking to an old lady in the park yesterday and she asked how old K is - when I said 19 months she was really surprised and said she thought she was a lot older than that.

We have weight issues in our families and I am very conscious to try and give her the best possible start with her diet, trying to tread a path between letting her eat anything and being too restrictive.

I haven't seen the HV since January and am thinking about going to the next clinic so that I can get her properly weighed and ask them about it. Do you think I will be wasting their time ?

I know this isn't strictly an AIBU topic but as there is already a HV topic I thought I would get prompt thoughts here !

but if I did just manage to do it right it says DS2 is above the 95th for both height and weight ??

Insomnia11 · 01/09/2011 14:33

A lot of DD2's clothes come from DD1, and I know they fitted DD1 at reasonably the same age as it said on the label. Rather than 2 years in advance as with DD2 Hmm.

Though I do wonder if I used to think "make it last" with DD1, whereas with DD2 there is a stock of clothes in the loft in the next size so I am more likely to think "Let's get the next size out and see if it fits."

FemaleYouNicked · 01/09/2011 14:36

TheLady Your boy is taller and heavier than his peer group, but you'll know that. Going by the graphs he is as tall as a tall 5yr old and as heavy as heavy 6 year old. Are your families tall?

GwendolenHarleth · 01/09/2011 14:38

This should tell you if her weight is ok for her her height.

TheLadyEvenstar · 01/09/2011 14:39

Female

Mum - 5ft 11
Brothers 6ft 4 and 6ft 5
Gt Grandad 6ft 6

Older sister - 5ft 3 Grin

TheLadyEvenstar · 01/09/2011 14:39

oopps his dad is 5ft 9

FemaleYouNicked · 01/09/2011 14:40

thelady Go up the line for 4 years and then across from 26kg and put an x where both lines meet. Do the same for height. Use a ruler if it helps..

can't see how you got 95 percentile

FemaleYouNicked · 01/09/2011 14:41

I think he takes after the tall 'uns and not his poor short arsed aunty!

TheLadyEvenstar · 01/09/2011 14:42

I have no idea how I got that result either - I did say I hae never been able to work them out even with DS1. Grin

Insomnia11 · 01/09/2011 14:42

I was four stone at age four as well, TLE. If it reassures you about your boy I'm not 36 stone now :)

TheLadyEvenstar · 01/09/2011 14:44

Insomnia, TBH I am not worried about him as he is in proportion. He is in 7yr olds clothes and a size 12 shoe. Which is what DS1 was wearing at 7.

DS2 was a prem baby weighing 5lb 15oz, I had had a predicted birth weight of between 10 - 11.5 lbs I am actually glad I gave birth early Grin

ASByatt · 01/09/2011 14:45

I had to take DS to see a dietician when he was a youngish toddler (due to allergy issues). The appointment started with an auxilliary wearing/measuring DS.
the dietician started the appointment by telling me that DS's weight and age made him clinically obese Shock

He then went on to say that of course because DS was also very tall, he was a very healthy weight/shape/build. I was cross - if I hadn't known my stats already (or rather, DS's stats - mine are a different matter!) then I would have been utterly freaked out by his initial comment, complete with long dramatic pause before he continued.

Silly man.

ASByatt · 01/09/2011 14:46

Erm, the auxilliary didn't wear DS, that would have been rather odd....... Of course she weighed him!

IwoulddoPachacuti · 01/09/2011 14:47

Some children are just bigger built. My DS always hovered at the top end of the centile graphs (he is 129 cms and turned 6 on May) and is actually off the chart now with his weight. We have been to see the nutritionist and she is not worried about him. If he keeps on growing the way he is growing he will be within the charts again in about a years time, and he is very muscular looking, there is no flab on him iykwm. we just make sure he eats healthy, normal size portions and gets plenty of exercise.

In contrast, my DD ( who is 5) is a total skinny Minnie and she would live off chocolate if I let her! Life isn't fair sometimes Sad

ASByatt · 01/09/2011 14:48

Oh and who was keeping a list of tall lads? DS is 6, v tall, blond and on a good day utterly wonderful!

IwoulddoPachacuti · 01/09/2011 14:51

My DS is devilishly good looking as well Wink Grin

DharmaBumpkin · 01/09/2011 14:52

My DD2 is so off the scale for weight and height (if there was a 120 percentile line she'd be on it!) that the HV actually referred her to a Paediatrician to check for growth disorders. The Paed was lovely and said in particular not to worry about her weight, it often takes the bigger & heavier bubs more time to crawl/walk as their little muscles have more work to do but it all evens out by about 3 years.

DD2 at 18 months is still a chubby giant... Last week met a 3 yr old she was bigger than!

I also try to feed her relatively healthily but don't deny her biscuits etc when others are having them.

Insomnia11 · 01/09/2011 14:52

What an odd man ASByatt. It's like weighing an adult and saying "Well Mrs So and So, you are clinically obese at 10 stone....or at least you would be at that weight if you were 4'5"...boom tish!"

Sirzy · 01/09/2011 14:53

I would ignore people making comments about how big she is tbh. Ds is 22 months, weighs 23lb and is still fitting a lot of
9-12 clothes and yet people still comment how big he is for his age!

tryingtoleave · 01/09/2011 15:04

Ds was 19 kg when he was 2. He is now 5 years old and still 19 kg.

itisnearlysummer · 01/09/2011 16:58

If she's eating healthily and not fat, just big all over, I wouldn't worry too much.

My DD is below the 0.4th centile for weight on the 0.4th centile for height. She always has been. At 5 she is in age 2-3 clothes yet the leggings are still baggy and too big on the waist so we roll them over. Her knickers are aged 12-18/18-24 months and are still too big on her - she has too wear leggings under dresses as her knickers are indecent! She still wears a pair of shorts aged 6-9 months!

I'd ignore people commenting on her size. It's too easy to see it as a criticism when they might just be expressing surprise.

kenobi · 01/09/2011 17:05

< kenobi busily addsASByatt's DS to her list. And adds DharmaBumpkin's DD too, so as not to stereotype her DD's taste in future partners >

kenobi · 01/09/2011 17:06

< ...and throws in Iwoulddo and Sirzy's DSs for good measure >

MamaChoo · 01/09/2011 17:17

Don't worry. At 24 mths DD was 14kg. She was definitely not skinny, but she wasnt fat and we couldnt work out whether she just had lead weights secreted about her person. She was tall and constantly got mstaken for an older, somewhat not very advanced child. One year later, with no change in diet, and 10cm taller, she weighed 15kg. She just evened out, with the help of the increased physical activity of a 2 year old.
