Because it is really annoying if you pepper your posts with exclamation marks at the end of every single statement! Like this! Is there any need!

Plus if you use more than half a dozen exclamation marks you come across as really thick!!!!!!!!

Stop it! Or go back to the Daily Mail comments section!

I realised yesterday that I want to use more explanation marks when I write in German.

Das ist so! Man will doch jeden Satz mit eine Ausrufezeichen enden, es schaut doch viel besser aus!

I think I speak more emphatically in German.

RedRubyBlue · 01/09/2011 11:02

I have always wanted to know what this means ¬

What is it called and when should I use it?

bigeyes · 01/09/2011 11:02

What???????????????????????

RustyBear · 01/09/2011 11:03

OP 'grammer police' is a Mumsnet meme, and not a misspelling...

ItAintHalfHotHun · 01/09/2011 11:08

I like spanish with the upside down exclamation marks

¡¡¡¡nos vemos mañana!!!!

I haven't done any German since I was 14, which is over 40 years ago, but I did get the gist of most of that! Something like "That's right! One should end every sentence with an exclamation mark, it (looks?) much better like that! Nicht wahr?

ItAintHalfHotHun · 01/09/2011 11:10

I know about the grammer police invasion rusty - that is why I put it in caps and said hun, I wasn't saying it to correct her, was being ironic.

It doesn't make you sound fun - it makes you sound like one of those 'I'm mad and bubbly, me' types who always seem to be the organisers of hen nights.

Don't you mean HUN nights??!!!!!! Grin

WolfShapedBullet · 01/09/2011 11:21

A Facebook acquaintance does this,,,,,, at the end of her sentences.

She's lovely, but I've had to hide her.

I mean,,,,, what is that all about? Ooh it does rankle with me. Grin

VelvetSnow · 01/09/2011 11:23

Oh dear WoilfShapedBullet - it could be me you're hiding Grin

I am lovely.

Pan · 01/09/2011 11:25

Was zahlst du fur einem Rat? - leave off the exclamation marks!!!!

und,

Wie machst du das Umlaut, bitte?

GrimmaTheNome · 01/09/2011 11:26

I wish we had those enclosing punctuation marks like the Spanish do. It would make reading aloud with the correct intonation much easier.

WolfShapedBullet · 01/09/2011 11:29

Oops, now Velvet do you replace words for letters on occasion? And play JewelQuest each and every day (another reason for hiding, my newsfeed was clogged).

scrambedeggs · 01/09/2011 11:29

YOU WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

PFFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MardyBra · 01/09/2011 11:31

Multiple exclamation marks is the grammatical equivalent of having a little sign saying "you don't have to be mad to work here but it helps" IMO.

I also suspect multiple exclamation mark users of having "Keep Calm and Carry On" tea towels.

Catsmamma · 01/09/2011 11:32

I am overly fond of the ..... too poppyknot

and I think the ,,,,,, thing is for people who won't wear their glasses and cannot see the difference between a comma and a full stop.

VelvetSnow · 01/09/2011 11:34

Not me Wolfy

I never play those crap games, I also hide those.

Phew.

Although I'm intrigued by the replacing of words for letters, do you mean y for why, and R for are?

Certainly not me.

I wouldn't just hide your friend - I'd delete :)

WolfShapedBullet · 01/09/2011 11:42

Wolfy is fine, very Citizen Smith (showing age).
Oh the relief, I was nervous for a moment there. Yikes.

I meant numbers in place of words of course, see I am no better than,,,, lady. Grin

MmeLindor. · 01/09/2011 11:44
