to think that NOT having a tattoo is more unusual than having a tattoo if you are under, say, 40 and live in the UK?

This is certainly my perception.

Am I wrong or am I right?

Neither my sister, sister in law or I have a tattoo and we are all under the age of 40 (sil and I are 39 - sis is 35)

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 29/08/2011 23:32

I know quite a lot (and I've thought about this hehe) of 30 something, 40ish women who have 'hidden' tattoos. A few had them done for their fortieth birthdays.

My DH has a lot of tattoos, all done in his youth, and fairly 'hideable' nothing crass, but I think given the choice, he'd prefer not to have them now.

I have a tattoo of a cat on my wrist that I actually got trying to help myself overcome my needle phobia.

It did not work and I had to see MHD psychologist and have to see hospital hypnotherapist before this baby arrives! Arch!!!

JjandtheBeanlovesUnicorns · 29/08/2011 23:34

Just on a rough scale, wedding guest list of 200, 7 people have tattoos.

Hatesponge · 29/08/2011 23:38

On holiday in Spain this summer, I don't remember seeing any of the 20 something guests round the pool (mostly Spanish) who didn't have a tattoo. So it's not just in the UK.

bibbitybobbityhat · 29/08/2011 23:38

Kayano - have you considered cognitive behavioural therapy (cbt) for your phobia? It can be a very effective treatment for non-depressive mental health issues, especially phobias, ocd, ptsd etc.

Bibbity - I dont know what that is, will look into it

Since getting pg a bit earlier than planned- before my sessions were complete I have had 2 proper needles

Hours of crying but I think I'm just about getting there x :D

bibbitybobbityhat · 29/08/2011 23:43

It is just a form of talking therapy. Very effective in changing one's mindset for the better. It has certainly helped me with my severe phobia of vomit and vomiting. Do look into it as an option.

I am 24 and don't have one, dp is 40 and doesn't have one.

We're the only ones who are uninked in our group of friends.

snippywoo2 · 29/08/2011 23:54

I have a 28yr friend whose name is Sarah (not her real name) and she's got her son's name tattooed on her wrist right above her hand.

that's usually where the wrist is lol

Poweredbypepsi · 30/08/2011 00:02

I am in my twenties and I only know one person who had a tattoo that was my great uncle who would be about 100 if he were still alive and got them in the 30s when he was in the army. I think i have a wide range of people i know but none have tattoos.

libelulle · 30/08/2011 00:06

V interesting thread! can't think of anyone I know - friend, acquaintance, relative or colleague - who has a tattoo. Possibly some hidden ones, but never seen them!

MillyR · 30/08/2011 00:09

I don't know many people who have tattoos. I don't see many people with them at the swimming pool either. Maybe their tattoos are all on their bums, hidden by swimsuits.

snippywoo2 · 30/08/2011 00:22

Has any one else noticed that when men get tattoos that's fine, women get them especially them ones on the base of the back and there called tramp stamps or slag tags

LRDTheFeministDragon · 30/08/2011 00:28

Visible tats - I can only think of 2/3 friends who have them (I'm 26). But I suspect a fair few have those dainty little ones you don't notice.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 30/08/2011 00:32

Tattoos might be cool on young firm skin, but they won't look so good on aged, crepey, wrinkled flesh. Hmm

snippywoo2 · 30/08/2011 01:42

On blokes they look the same no matter how old they get I find maybe its because they stick to having them on the arms, on women not so good due to saggy tummies. What once was a dolphin around the belly button for example is now a whale.

differentnameforthis · 30/08/2011 03:26

I agree...most of family have them, inc my just turned 18yr old niece who has the most horrible tattoo on the whole of her upper arm!!

I only knew a few people without & definitely feel in a minority (for not having one) among my peers.
