to think there are too many topics on Mumsnet

Did you know there is a Potty Training topic on this board? And one specifically for parents of pre-teens as well as one for parents of actual teenagers? There's a topic for car seats and well ... the list is almost endless.

AIBU to think that the reason people post unnecessarily in AIBU is that there are too many topics with not enough traffic in them so they use AIBU to get replies as they know they'd go unnoticed if posted in the relevant topic?

I've seen plenty of posters advise posters to move their threads to the right topic to get better advice and support

Why would you post a problem in AIBU when you need support?

worraliberty · 29/08/2011 11:52

Why would you post a problem in AIBU when you need support?

Because there are far too many categories and this is one of the busiest ones

I feel the thread has come full circle Grin

When people post "I've put this in AIBU because it is busiest"

surely the only correct response is

"it's only busiest because feckers like you don't go anywhere else"

usualsuspect · 29/08/2011 11:55

So direct them to the appropriate topic then

usualsuspect · 29/08/2011 11:57

That was to Worra

LeBOF · 29/08/2011 12:03

I think we only need two topics: Stuff About Kids, and Stuff Not About Kids. Then I could hide the first one Grin.

TrillianAstra · 29/08/2011 12:04

You are too generous BoF.

How about "stuff I like" and "stuff I don't like"? You'll all just have to learn.

LeBOF · 29/08/2011 12:06
Grin

nothing about kids is actually needed specifically...suuuuuuuuuuuure this started out as a parenting site but it has evolved, in fact i think parents of kids under 5 should be banned

worraliberty · 29/08/2011 12:12

I'd be too embarrassed to be honest. It really doesn't bother me if someone out there decides they want to post here, there or anywhere.

If at any point my life takes a sharp downturn and it becomes an important issue to me, I'll sit here in a high viz vest and direct everyone to where they should be....provided I can work out exactly where that is Grin

milkmilklemonade · 29/08/2011 14:23

I suggest the following topics:
Staffy hate thread
Cat shit in my garden
Disabled/parent parking spaces
It would save a lot of time as I could ignore those topics

milkmilklemonade · 29/08/2011 14:25

I also think anything after 9pm should be for adults only and the breast beating about Marcus not getting 647 A*s hidden until morning. Maybe then the fussots would kick back and have a wine and forget the lives led through their children.
(note was going to correct sp of fusspot and then decided that fussot was as good as any word)

freybean · 29/08/2011 17:30

milk you forgot bf vs ff Smile

YANBU! MNHQ should cut the topics that don't get more than x amount of posts a day.

Maybe that way there would be room to add other topics on a trial basis (to see if they do well)

SouthernFriedTofu · 29/08/2011 18:19

BTW I think most posters tend to post in the correct topic if they know the topic gets some traffic. The ones that are so obscure that you feel as though you are in Siberia shouting for help tend to get ignored for obvious reasons

duchesse · 29/08/2011 18:29

The reason some topics get more traffic than others is that they come out high up on the active threads page. Some people have specialist interest and hang around on topics they have specialist knowledge of. Some people want separate topics (eg Special Needs, larger families) so that they can evolve in an environment where they feel secure and people will understand their specific problems.

Apart from that it is difficult to get much traffic across many topics. If you need a rapid response you will often not get it unless you post in a fast-moving area.

Custardo Parents of under 5's should be banned Grin Love it ! I wonder what the average age of MNer DC's is ?
