To buy DS and DD bags for school/pre school that are not branded!!

ThePosieParker · 26/08/2011 23:38

I bought dd this to put her lunch box in and this for DS3 for his first pre school bag to put a chnage of clothes in. DH said that dd would have preferred Hello Kitty but I have a real aversion to logo/branded stuff.

AIBU to buy what I like???

Misdee. You are my hero.

I hadn't heard of them either. But my 3 are 7,7 and 6 so we're slightly out of date.

I just typed in owl bag and monkey bag as was sick of the rucksack shite available.

I have bought nice rucksacks from Gap in the past as you can clip lunch bags on and they last but this years had skulls on and none of us liked them.

I have to say there is a real gap in the market for quality kids rucksacks.

Bought my boys gorgeous ones in the Lands End sale instead.Gorgeous quality and design.Dd I don't need to buy anything for.

Must just add I show my 3 what I'm thinking of before I buy to check they love them and are happy to wear them. It's pointless otherwise.

Skip Hop, Djeco, Eeboo, Kid Eco, Melissa & Doug.... all brands just like Disney, tomy, barbie, hello kitty.
I like both but by choosing the former, you are absolutely not opting out of commercialism!

Dozer · 28/08/2011 09:03

"not branded" my arse!

pink4ever · 28/08/2011 09:07

stealth boasting

MilaMae · 28/08/2011 09:08

Joric I love Eeboo and Djeco, fully realise you're not opting out of commercialism but said companies concentrate on the product and not just the name.Disney,Hello Kitty etc rely on the name not quality or design. As I said previously the quality is often total shite.

Djeco art products are fab. Now my dd got given a Disney princess (vomit emoticon) art set and it was shite we literally binned it after 2 minutes. We have several Djeco art sets given to us and they're bloody fab.

Basically Djeco don't have a character to rely on to sell their products with little effort. They're known for quality art sets which appeal to older as well as younger children. If they don't produce products that are decent quality, kids use and don't bin they won't sell end of.

Disney will always sell regardless of quality, design of anything else for the simple reason their products have a Disney Princess face stamped on them.

ThePosieParker · 28/08/2011 09:11

I don't get the cries of boasting, it's a school bag and under £15. I wondered how many people pander to the tastes if their children as DH would everytime.

Never heard of skip hop but I was under the impression when I opened the thread that money was the issue.
Not sure why it makes a difference that it's not but it does Confused
Just being honest here, I guess if I had the money I would let dd (6) choose her own bag (to a certain extent, I do agree that you have to try and steer kids towards good taste) for a 3 yo I would pick what I thought was best.

MrsRhettButler · 28/08/2011 09:15

Under £15? My conversion skills are clearly shite! Still, about the same you'd pay for a hello kitty bag I guess....

CheerfulYank · 28/08/2011 09:16

They're okay. I don't love the colors, but the bags themselves are cute enough I suppose.

My DS has a Transformers backpack, and yes I do hate it. :) But he earned it with really good behavior so I don't say anything.

MrsRhettButler · 28/08/2011 09:17

How old is dd?

I've decided yanbu (you must be so relieved) Grin Wink
if I didn't give dd a choice and just presented her with that she would love it! :)

MorallyBankrupt · 28/08/2011 09:18

The euro to pound rate is around 1.1. I cannot comprehend how that takes 25 euros down to 'under £15'

MilaMae · 28/08/2011 09:19

Thank goodness my dd is now 6.Just seen a Skip Hop owl bib, book ends and Skip Hop owl plate set. I'd have to sit on my hands just can't resist those damn owls!!!!

MorallyBankrupt · 28/08/2011 09:20

Yep just checked. £22.01. Plus postage.

No stealth boasting my ass Hmm

MrsRhettButler · 28/08/2011 09:20

Until that is, some mean little cow girl said something along the lines of 'I've got a Disney princess/hello kitty/commercial tat/etc bag and it's better than yours'

joric · 28/08/2011 09:23

mila agree with the point about quality but that's my point...
These companies are so clever, they market (quality and 'taste') to parents in just the same way as the huge international companies market to children (branding and characters).
I'm a sucker for the 'quality' marketing, my DD is a sucker for 'branding'.... We are both being influenced by marketing whether I like it or not!

ThePosieParker · 28/08/2011 09:27

Fine, morally bankrupt. I thought I would create a thread to tell everyone about my children's bags, nothing to do with the chasm of difference between myself and DH who thinks disney, go bobbly after one wash, nightwear.

OP posts:
ThePosieParker · 28/08/2011 09:28

Is okay.

MorallyBankrupt · 28/08/2011 09:30

I think you started the thread to show everyone what excellent taste you think you have. Plus the idea that those bags are unbranded made me laugh, actually quite hard. I was expecting a link to something made out of hemp, not skip hop!

It's all a little yummy mummy try hard for me tbh.

pink4ever · 28/08/2011 09:33

No you didnt. You didnt say here are my childrens bags-do you like them? You said here are my childrens bags, they cost more than most could afford to spend on kids bags, they are unbranded, see how much they say about me and my family and our aspirations. Or maybe that was just my interpretation of it?.

MilaMae · 28/08/2011 09:34

MrsRhett we'd had that already over shoes(Lelli Kelly/Daisy doll school shoes oh yes indeedy) and many things. My dd was teased for not having Daisy school shoes with heals that cave in. She has always had Startrite shoes that fit(thin feet). It's been an eye opener having a girl I tell you.

I never want my dd to follow the crowd and want character brands because the pack has.I want her to have the strength of character to look for quality, design, fit alongside her own taste that isn't influenced by other girls. She'll be a teenager one day and I want to teach her now that following the pack isn't always a good thing. She's really doing it now,I'm soooo proud of her.

A small example of this is school summer sahoes. At our school they're supposed to have sensible black/brown shoes but all the girls turn up in inappropriate wedge white sandals with heels hanging over the back. I said to dd sorry but no so as a compromise she had some Startrite Lottie shoes and yes she was the only one. She was proud of the fact and thrilled that she didn't trip over her shoes and could climb and run in them.

The alternative would have been shoes that didn't fit and led to her tripping over. She happily chose the sensible route and now really doesn't care about the herd mentality. When she's older it will doubtlessly crop up again but I feel bit by bit I'm giving her a valuable life skill.

Not had a teenager so I'll doubtlessly fall on my face at some point down the line but one can but try Smile.

MorallyBankrupt · 28/08/2011 09:37

pink4ever that's pretty much what I read too.

MilaMae · 28/08/2011 09:38

But Joric I know my art supplies and if they're shit I don't buy.

Yes I'm influenced by quality but I'd rather be influenced by that than a trademark.I get nothing out of the trademark in fact I pay for thin air ie a cheap bag that falls to bits and a trademark.

With quality I get something in return ie art materials that work and encourage my dc's creativity. When dd used the Disney art set we had nothing,it didn't work.We were just left with a trademark Disney face-looking at us out of the bin Grin.

MrsRhettButler · 28/08/2011 09:41

Oh god, lellie kellys! I honestly can't afford them but even if I could I would explain to dd about quality and fit.

I agree with your post completely mila and I do explain about wearing the right things to look after your feet, the same as looking after your body/teeth by what you eat, dc's definitely need to learn to take care of the (only body) they have for life.
and it works! She now thinks for herself and is sensible when I say no to something and she understands why.
Slightly off tangent sorry :)

pink4ever · 28/08/2011 09:42

milamae Im sorry but you do realise how far up your own arse you sound dont you? what do you mean the disney art set didnt work? did your dc not create the master piece you were expecting then?Hmm
Yes sometimes its good to buy quality things ie agree over shoes but disney/hello kitty etc are not the work of the devil as you seem to be suggesting. And you are not allowing your dd to set her own style,or go against the pack You are imposing what you think is good taste on her. How is that allowing her to think for herself?.
