to be annoyed that I struggle with cryptic crosswords...

I've been trying to get into cryptic crosswords, and I'm really annoyed that I struggle with them, and some find them so easy. I can usually get a few and when I cheat, find myself thinking either
a) Oh, that's so bloody obvious, or
b) How could anyone have put all that together?

Anyone else like them? Maybe we could have a MN group to improve? Or a grandmaster to help us?

I love cryptic crosswords. My dad gets the Telegraph for the crossword , it's reasonably straightforward. Observer Everyman is a good one to get started ( Azed is far too hard for me ! ). I find the Guardian quite variable, sometimes it's a bit too tricksy, especially the themed ones.

Most memorable clue : K (8 letters). Only figured it out once I'd filled in the other answers.

I don't often do the cryptic crosswords but i love the super fienish/fiendish sudoku in the Times.

I like the general knowledge crosswords.

JKSLtd · 24/08/2011 21:16

Inertia - i give up, a pm please!

hocuspontas · 24/08/2011 21:19

thousand?

hocuspontas · 24/08/2011 21:24

I remember the clue that got me hooked over 40 years ago was 'hijklmno' (5). Answer - water. As a 15 year old I thought that was ace Grin

tethersend · 24/08/2011 21:32

I'm in- I can only do half of the Everyman in the Observer. Over the course of a week.

BTW, hocus- I don't get it!

JKSLtd · 24/08/2011 21:35

Ah thousand would make sense, in the 'kilo' meaning.

I like that H to O clue Grin

pixielicious · 24/08/2011 22:47

I hate them too. In fact, I'm rubbish at all crosswords, which is weird, as I'm supposed to be a linguist... Hmm And yet I have no problem with the Times' Super Fiendish Sudoku! Yet DP, who is good at maths, can't do Sudoku but can do crosswords! Grin I don't get it at all!

Inertia · 24/08/2011 23:42

JKS- have PMed you. Though I fear you may be disappointed.

Thumbwitch · 25/08/2011 00:00

Inertia - K = potassium, no?

LineRunner · 25/08/2011 00:19

A thousand tangled results of addition come to rest against a capturing device- or a web of deceit!

I love them! Used to do the Glasgow Herald one every day. It started with my parents doing the cryptic crossword, then they got me hooked. Once you do the same one every day and get into the mindset they become quite simple. But the Glasgow Herald has an extra one on a Monday called the "Wee Stinker" you need a dictionary and a set of encyclopaedias for that baby! If you complete it, you can send it in and the first 5 get a Wee Stinker t-shirt. My dad finally got one last year Grin

Joolyjoolyjoo · 25/08/2011 00:27

Mumsnet!

LineRunner · 25/08/2011 00:28

Nihilisticbunny · 25/08/2011 00:30

I prefer dingbats, wish the stupid iphone app would update, I'm rubbish at crosswords though. Linerunner, I would say liasons, no idea why

Nihilisticbunny · 25/08/2011 00:31

Ah mumsnet, of course, yes ConfusedGrin.

Inertia · 25/08/2011 00:33

Thumbwitch- no, not for this one.

Can't quite remember which letters I had from the other answers, but it was something like

o t i _

LineRunner · 25/08/2011 00:33

Boy snuggles into part of yacht heading backwards - all for friendships.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 25/08/2011 00:56

Grin yay!

LineRunner · 25/08/2011 00:58

K = mountain.

Inertia · 25/08/2011 01:08

Not mountain, sorry LineRunner.

Are you a ref/ assistant ref btw?

LineRunner · 25/08/2011 01:12
