To think it's Not On to go about singing loudly at work when you are new/a temp?

I mean, it's Not On as a general rule, but at least if you've worked somewhere for eleventy years you can get away with eccentric or annoying habits. But if you are a temp and only been somewhere a few days, wouldn't you keep your loud show offy singing under check for a bit? I admit I have high standards of behaviour for my colleagues, I have previously debated the smelly fish lunch lady and the stewing lamb in a slow cooker lady (regarding neither was I BU by the way) but this is ridonkulous. I keep hearing bursts of pop songs at full volume coming from the admin room. The other admin workers must be fit to kill by now.

"Hahahaha I walk around barefoot!"

TBF you can't really complain or expect high-standards from your colleagues if you're walking around bare-foot or wearing fli-flops to work.

If she really is annoying everyone, could you all not collectively start howling or meowing when she starts singing ?

Or ask one another who brought their cat into work ?

Or, just ask her to stop.

Failing that, leave her be, she is clearly a happy soul. And as she is a temp, and not going to be with you for long, why shouldn't she sing in a room full of people she doesn't know ? If she temps regularly, she's probably used to the office regulars all banding together, so she goes about her work and sings while she does. As long as she gets her job done, does it matter ?

I couldn't stand that. AT ALL! Other people's quirks drive me a bit mad anyhow but a singer...god no.

RevoltingPeasant · 24/08/2011 17:14

mayor not wearing shoes = your hygiene problem

singing = a fucking loud annoying disruptive noise, which is then everyone else's problem and prevents them from working

I don't think not wearing shoes necessarily indicates a lack of standards - one of the best researchers in my last dept didn't wear shoes a lot of the time - but preventing other people from working is idiotic and should be Stamped Out.

I agree it's highly annoying, I was more adressing her position that she holds high-expectations of her work colleagues as being a bit hypocritical if she does something which many would consider quite unprofessional such as walk around barefoot in the office.
Also walking around in barefeet may annoy some of her colleagues in which case it would impact on others.
As I say though I agree singing loudly and in impromptu bursts is ridiculous carry on and should be stopped.

I hope you don;t say ridonkulous at work. I'd hate that.

Rowena8482 · 24/08/2011 17:46

If you won't tell her because you don't want her to feel uncomfortable then it serves you right to have to listen to her :-| doesn't it???? That said, nobody else has told her either, so it serves you all right Grin and when she treats you to all nine hours of Brunhilde's part from the Ring Cycle, you won't get any sympathy... it can't be good for productivity if everyone else is just sat rolling their eyes, gnashing their teeth, and desperately wishing someone else would tell her to STFU....

Is he/she any good? A bad singer would annoy me even more than a good one.

Itsjustafleshwound · 24/08/2011 18:22

My DH starts singing really horrible tunes - but what is worse is that he only knows a line or two so just repeats it over and over and over ....
