knackered my back in January. It has hurt more or less ever since despite exercise, physio, osteopath and drugs.

I had an MRI last month and it appears there is absolutely nothing wrong with me (except minor wear and tear, Hmm Minor?????)

SO why the fucking hell does it still hurt?

It hurts if I move around as normal. It hurts if I rest. It hurts if I exercise. It hurts if I take drugs or not. Some days are better than others. Mostly I function but I am stiff and achy and have to e very careful how I move and every time I stop I sieze up and it hurts more when I try to get going again. I am like an old person and have to heave myself up from chairs or bed.

I haven't slept through the night since January. I wake up every time I turn over.

Ouch and ARGH!

I would recommend a course of 1-1 pilates, a pair of mbt trainers and a decent memory foam mattress.

I was in a similar state with constant pain in my hip, ribs and back. The mbts helped with my posture, you may not need them if your posture is already good, but they also help strengthen your abdominal and core muscles (which is also what the pilates is good for) and that takes the strain off your back.

The best thing I ever did though was buy a decent memory foam topper (7.5cm) for our bed. I hadn't had a decent night's sleep in over a year and I slept straight through the first night we put it on the bed.

Have you been referred to the pain clinic at all? My sister suffered years of chronic pain for which they couldn't find the source. She's now been diagnosed with neuropathic pain and is pain free for the first time in years since starting treatment.

Pilates pilates pilates. Brilliant for lower back pain. I have similar issues and pilates keeps it under control (touch wood).

FabbyChic · 23/08/2011 21:22

Seriously its the weight. Im only 5ft 2" and being 12 stone I was in agony with my back sometimes unable to move at all.

After I dropped a stone the back pain went.

If you lose weight your back will get better. Seriously.

Sorry. I know it is hard, I found it a struggle.

Was going to say pilates in a small group, but then realised it'd be xposting with half the universe.

seriously...

Another one in chronic pain but for different reasons here.
Memory foam mattresses are life savers, they really are. My pain more than halved when I bought one. I also wear a back support when moving around, that helps too.
Otherwise, persevere with osteopathy, (if it isnt helping much switch practioner, they're worth their weight in gold) weight loss, pilates and relaxation.
I do sympathise. It's terrible.

i took up cycling to work and my recurrent lower back pain went away. did sufficient work on abs to compensate without having to find time to exercise, and lost a good deal of weight. might be worth considering if cycling is feasible for you?

AuntiePickleBottom · 23/08/2011 21:46

are you stressed, as stress can cause backpain

wearenotinkansas · 23/08/2011 21:49

Have you tried acupuncture? I had shoulder pain for 2 years - caused by stress/posture etc. I had two different sets of treatment. They both helped but the second one was brilliant as the acupuncturist put a huge f**k off needle into my shoulder muscle and it did something amazing. Hurt a bit for a couple of days but hasn't been back since.

Also, recommend yoga for lower back pain if you haven't tried it. (don't know about pilates).

Try a chiropracter. Pilates to improve strength of core muscles. And lose weight. hugs.
