to have underestimated how much joy a new radiator could bring?

old one in living room (grill topped, wonky, full of cat hair and drink straws, terrible pipe work) fell off the wall as bracket perished.......hooray!

So had no choice but to buy a new old school one and have the wall replastered and painted behind with new underfloorboard pipe work to boot. I cannot stop admiring it, it used to let the room down - now it shines.

Never knew such a thing could create so much happiness!

Perhaps this should be in the AIB a saddo section???

I am with you. Couple of years ago got two reclaimed Victorian ones for the lounge. They are beautiful and actually heat the room! I still look over at them from time to time and smile. One of them is in the bay window and is squat so you can sit on it.

minipie · 23/08/2011 19:34

YANBU

In my old flat, I had a radiator which was flat and vertical rather than horizontal. So it was essentially about the same height as me. Perfect to cling to on a really cold day.

Reader, I loved that radiator. Now we have moved and all I have are crappy horizontal radiators which I can only warm my legs on

ChairOfTheBored · 23/08/2011 19:38

YANBU to be joyful, but you are BU to not post photos or links. We are having building work done, which has meant I now take an unhealthy interest in light switchers, light fittings, and radiators.

ChairOfTheBored · 23/08/2011 19:42

switchers? What is wrong with me? Switches, obviously.

minipie · 23/08/2011 19:45

Chair Hudevad make the lovely, flat panel radiators of which I speak.

(Or rather the "room heaters" as you might call them Grin)

RandomMess · 23/08/2011 19:47

I have 2 new modern anthracite tall radiators and they are just divine to look at so I completely understand Smile

cantpooinpeace · 23/08/2011 19:56

So it turns out I'm not a freak after all! :)

No, YANBU. I'm really really excited about our new boiler. Even the engineer was a bit creeped out by my sheer enthusiasm and happiness.

coccyx · 23/08/2011 20:21

enjoy

YANBU

I have a heating system installed in the early 1970's. UGLY boiler in the middle of the kitchen. Mad tank in the loft build ON TOP OF A WARDROBE with supporting frame around. Radiators that have been painted over and over with the wrong paint, no sandpaper could smooth them. So so so ugly. First things you see are huuuuge radiator in the hall with holes in the paint then yellow 70's boiler.

But it is kicking out heat like nobody's business. Can heat the house from cold in 10-15 min (big old house too). Cannot justify loan to change it all however ugly as it so reliable.

ThatWomanAgain · 23/08/2011 21:50

Anyway, this is odd....I covert my neighbours (double-glazed) windows.

I have secondary glazing :(

ginmakesitallok · 23/08/2011 21:55

No YANBU. Tonight I am overjoyed at a bath with properly working taps - the cold tap went to a drip about a month ago and the hot tap was going the same way (we were filling bath using shower for kids) Today DP got round to fixing it and it was WONDERFUL to fill a bath for DD2 in about 2 minutes. I love DP and I love our flowing water!

cantpooinpeace · 23/08/2011 22:10

The simple things ey! :)

We decorated our bathroom, took the radiator off the wall and stupidly put it in the garden while we painted behind it. It got nicked, 4 year, yes 4 years we were without a radiator in the bathroom. I remember it well. Freezing cold even if you left the door open. Brrrr. We had a new radiator fitted when OH finally got his finger out we had our loft converted. And it was the happiest moment of my sad life. The novelty hasn't worn off yet and its been nearly 6 months. Enjoy your radiator

ChairOfTheBored · 24/08/2011 20:52

mmmm. radiator porn

Thanks minipie

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 24/08/2011 22:44

I have no radiators. I will live warmly vicariously though the radiator porn on this thread.

If I ever move back into an old house, I will be having reclaimed radiators. I like that you can perch on the normal ones, and properly sit on the squat ones.

One word, ChairoftheBored: Jaga.
We replaced all ours with Jaga radiators. They are efficient, stylish and will save you money on heating. Come in a variety of colours too.
I will never covet the old-style ones again.

Catsmamma · 25/08/2011 15:07

I don't like radiators much, but I do adore the fancy chrome towel rail one we have in the bathroom.

I am radiatorist.

Paschaelina · 25/08/2011 15:09

I love my old-skool radiator in my bedroom, its big enough to sit on and huggle a mug of hot chocolate while looking out over the fields at the wind and rain outside.

To think DH wanted underfloor heating instead...

IgnoringTheChildren · 25/08/2011 16:00

We replaced "skirting board" radiators with more traditional ones (traditional as in boring, no radiator porn stars here). Despite the new radiators not being that pretty I still love them as:

1 They actually heat the house, and
2 I can now push furniture up against the walls if I wish!

Radiators can be life-changingly good! :)

thinNigella · 25/08/2011 16:07

oooops. I've acidentally read this thread. It's about radiators.
Ladies, radiators. Please. At least move on to carpets, rugs, cushions and other soft furnishings ...!

stealthsquiggle · 25/08/2011 16:10

YANBU at all, OP.

We have replaced radiators in 2 rooms now and I love the news ones. The old ones everywhere else get evil looks from me but there is no way we can afford wholesale replacement Sad

peeriebear · 25/08/2011 16:16

I am getting all my shitty old leaking grubby chipped rads replaced next week by the council :o They are also removing my achingly retro looking council fire and not putting a new one in, thus giving me an extra wall space to use :)
It is going to be a big pain in the arse (thy need us to move bedroom bookcase, drawers, bed, empty airing cupboard, move stuff in attic, etc) but the end result will make the rooms look sooooo much better.
