TragicallyHip · 22/08/2011 23:31

Oh my! My dad say's that and he hates swearing! Not going to be too happy when I tell him this..

BimboNo5 · 22/08/2011 23:31

The the news reader/presenter Michael Burke is really Michael Cunt? Shock

Mspontipine · 22/08/2011 23:33

Well I never!

Fontsnob · 22/08/2011 23:40

Treacle Tart = sweetheart

RebelFromTheWaistDown · 22/08/2011 23:50

Is berk not a disablist term then?

heleninahandcart · 23/08/2011 00:10

YANBU Going to go with 'silly berk' at next passive aggressive opportunity Grin

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 23/08/2011 00:22

Berk isn't a disabilst term Rebel - if you call someone a berk it means that you think they're a cunt.

Tell someone they're talking pony ('fucking pony, mate') and it means they're talking crap - pony & trap.

I like a bit of Cockney rhyming slang: butcher's, syrup, barnet, adam & eve, and a ruby murray Grin

Fo0ffyShmoofer · 23/08/2011 00:24

Is treacle tart - Fart?

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 23/08/2011 00:27

Let's have a butcher's (hook) - look
He looked like a berk in that syrup (of figs) - wig
Nice barnet (fair) - hair
Would you adam and eve it - believe it
Let's have a ruby (murray) - curry.

snippywoo2 · 23/08/2011 00:31

I never got the rhyming thing, why rhyme when you can say it straight. Some people have to much time on their hands, say it straight saves time. Smile

izzywhizzyletsgetbusy · 23/08/2011 00:34

'Come 'ere me old treacle' - treacle tart = sweetheart
'That horse was a bit whiffy' horse & cart = fart

monoid · 23/08/2011 00:49

My Mum used to refer to us as "me old china". It only recently occurred to me that china = china plate = mate. I was so chuffed when I worked that out Grin

ravenAK · 23/08/2011 00:55

I always thought it came from Burke & Hare.

They were grave robbers, selling corpses for dissection in the 1820s, who turned to murder as being less hassle & providing a fresher, 'to order' product.

After they were caught, Hare was offered a deal to testify against his partner, who was hanged - so a 'burke' is a mug, someone easily taken advantage of, a fallguy.

ripstheirthroatoutliveupstairs · 23/08/2011 07:29

Burke and hare? No, tis Berkley Hunt. You must pronouce the Berkley bit as it is written, not in some poncetastic way.

MrsBradleyCooper · 23/08/2011 09:05

DH speaks in rhyming slang all the time - it doesn't even register that he's doing it now when he says "oh she's a bit of a treac" or "let's order a ruby" or "what's the Harry?"

When I first met him I was this face Confused all the time Grin

TragicallyHip · 23/08/2011 11:45

I love a bit of rhyming slang. It's all a bit of fun snippy!

redexpat · 23/08/2011 12:18

YANBU. I only learnt it when I read notes from a small island. Thanks Bill Bryson!

JanMorrow · 23/08/2011 12:24

I told my Mum this a few years ago and she swiftly stopped calling people berks!

nannyl · 23/08/2011 12:27

I too have learnt something new today then!

picnicbasketcase · 23/08/2011 12:30

Someone told me a couple of years back that the fart noise is called a raspberry cos of raspberry tart - never would've worked that out either Blush

youarekidding · 23/08/2011 12:34

I love it. Grin

It's my learn something new to try out today. Wink

Glitterknickaz · 23/08/2011 12:36

Witchofthenorth · 23/08/2011 14:36

A fishes fanny?

Witchofthenorth · 23/08/2011 14:41

Shock just googled "do fish have fannies" just for the crack you know? (no pun intended) and was met with toothed vaginas!!! Remind me not to do silly things like that again :o
