Torture/Gore movies - why would you ENJOY them?

So I've been seeing someone for a few weeks now and it's become apparant that he likes torture movies such as SAW, Hostel etc

We're supposed to be going to the cinema at some point and he wants to go and see Final Destination. I don't. I don't see anything entertaining about watching people die sick and gruesome deaths. In the clip I've seen, someone gets covered in burning hot tar and someone else gets killed during lazer eye surgery. Gross.

His other suggestion was that we watch some SAW DVDs at his house. Again, no thanks.

He thinks I'm unusual but why the hell would you actually WANT to watch stuff like this??

I love decent gorey horror films, but Saw and Hostel are simply quite shit, those who make these films stand of the shoulders of giants then squat and poo over those who really knew how to use entrails.

So Op I agree with you because the films are crap, but its nothing to do with the gore.

Poweredbypepsi · 22/08/2011 17:40

I hate anything lile that. DH doesnt watch them either, i dont think he hates them so much as just doesnt find them interesting or amusing. I do wonder about the minds of some of the writers of some of them. I dont like films or tv programmes that leave me feeling distressed!

oh i do like paranormally type films but not torturey ones

Insomnia11 · 22/08/2011 17:53

I watched some of Final Destination when it was on TV and thought it was completely daft and walked out of the room to do something else. DH watched it though. He wouldn't seek it out specifically but would watch probably watch SAW if it was on TV whereas I would avoid like the plague. I watched Seven when I was about 20 and thought it was the worst, most depressing film I've ever seen in my life.

I will watch spooky films though then not sleep properly for weeks.

I don't mind battle scenes if they aren't gratutious. Gladiator - ok. Braveheart - switched off. I quite like swords and sandals films or medieval epics generally. Also most action films are ok. So there is a fair bit of overlap with films DH and I can watch together.

I do love kids films though. Most of the DVDs I've ostensibly bought for our daughters I bought because I wanted to see them too. How to Train Your Dragon is more my kind of film :)

I would seriously be put off someone if they were well into horror/torture films though.

PersonalClown · 22/08/2011 17:57

I loved Saw and the idea behind them. The idea that what they were doing was harming people and he gave them a taste of their own medicine, so to speak. But as the series progressed, it just became new ways to freak people with the contraptions.
I think it was when a new director took over.

I can't stand Hostel and others like it as it is just trying to be disgusting for the hell of it. Shock value I guess.

Final Destination is just funny.

maybells · 22/08/2011 17:59

i am a complete wimp i find watching people being butchered and maimed disturbing and completely unnecessary. my oh likes watching horror but he nows if he wants to watch it he can watch it when Ive gone to bed.

PersonalClown · 22/08/2011 18:04

Saw was directed by James Wan.
2, 3 and 4 was done by Darren Lynn Bousman
5, 6 and 7 were by Kevin Greutert.

IMO the last were the worst. The story got stupid to justify the traps. Should have finished them at 3.

littlemisssarcastic · 22/08/2011 18:13

I've watched all but the last SAW, and enjoyed them, mainly for the story line. I was fascinated by what was going to happen to John and who was going to continue the campaign after John.
I haven't seen the last one, but would like to, although am not sure I would want to watch it in 3D.
I actually hate the torture scenes and cover my eyes at them, but the story line is what keeps me hooked.
I have also seen Seven, and would watch that again.
I watched Hannibal Lecter too, got to get round to watching Silence of the Lambs.

Anyway, I enjoyed SAW the most, and I am the least violent person I know. I hate real life gore, and can't bear blood and injuries.
I admire nurses/Dr's. That is a job I could never ever do but the films I mention are not real. It may have been done before, but I am not seeing real life torture on the screen, only actors.
Tbh the thought of some of the torture methods in medieval times makes me shudder much more than those films.

That said, I wouldn't be too impressed with a new boyfriend trying to persuade me to watch something I find so distasteful. Have you told your b/f how gross you find these movies?

littlemisssarcastic · 22/08/2011 18:17

Also, for me, it would depend how often my b/f wanted to watch movies such as these.

I might watch one 3/4 times a year maximum, but if I had a b/f (or even a friend) who wanted to watch them in all of their spare time, over and over, if someone blatantly relished the torture, became excited at the sight of it (I have a friend who was like this and watched the assassination of JFK over and over and over, just that few seconds over and over) then I would question their motives, Hmm but that's just me.

bushymcbush · 22/08/2011 18:29

OP you are not strange. I hate gore films. But your bf isn't strange either for liking them.

What I don't get is why he can't just accept that you don't like them. Why is he still pushing you into watching one with him? That is strange.

TotemPole · 22/08/2011 18:46

Going to the cinema and watching DVDs can be a major part of dating. It could be that enjoying the same films is important to him.

Is that all he watches. Does he ever watch action, sci fi, drama or is it always horror of some type?

somewherewest · 22/08/2011 19:11

I'm not sure I could ever have gone out with someone who liked watching Hostel style torture porn...maybe I'm being irrational. Mercifully DH dislikes that stuff as much as I do.

I watch a lot of them to pick up tips, I have a massive fear of sharks (to the point where I can barely go swimming in a pool or go near the beach - I live in the UK where I KNOW there aren't any but hey thats an irrational fear for you!)

  • For example, if ever something like that happened (shark or zombie attack, capture/entrapment etc) then I always think these help, a kind of how not to do it.

That may sound a little crazy ...

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 22/08/2011 19:22

Also - Agree with the posters who say perhaps you should suggest alternatives?

Maybe something in between - 'Death at a funeral' is like a dark comedy but without the gore?

ChunkyMonkeyMother · 22/08/2011 19:24

Not to avoid but to know how to get out/escape/survive ... I've been known to jot ideas down whilst watching 28 days/weeks later and other such films - Rule number 1 - Avoid shopping malls and young blonde girls

TotemPole · 22/08/2011 19:32

Don't go outside to investigate a strange noise.
Never ever say, phew, I'm glad that's over.

Asmodeus · 22/08/2011 19:37

These are the best types of Horror movie for me. Forget ghosts and Vampires... films like Hostel show brutal things that could actually happen. They're very unlikely things but nothing in these films is outwith the extreme of pain a pesron can endure.

As an avid horror fan from childhood I can safely sat that the more shocking it is, the more terror there is, the more fear... the more likely I am to watch it!

DH is usually the same but even he couldn't stomach Hostel 2 after the virgin met with an unfortunate surprise...

Empusa · 22/08/2011 19:41

I like gory films if there is a decent plot, same as all films really.

Gore without a decent plot (like hostel) is just dull, and low entertainment. But some people like it, don't think it makes anyone "wrong" or "missing something" Hmm Just different taste. I personally like films to scare me, so will watch a lot of horror, though for me the real scares are in more subtle films like the Orphanage. But other people get their scares from gore.

It's safe, and can be carthartic.

Andrewofgg · 22/08/2011 19:44

Everyone to their taste. Forty years ago I had a GF who loved horror films, especially vampire films and Hammer Horror offerings. Any remember The Abominable Dr Phibes?

Empusa · 22/08/2011 19:45

"Any remember The Abominable Dr Phibes?"
