To be seriously worried that the cost of food is getting so scarily high

I am not extravagant I buy shop own brands where I can, I try to shop on a budget, I cook from scratch and have given up buying extras like wine (well just the odd bottle to keep me sane) but still each week the cost of my food bill goes up and up. I know inflation is running at around 4-5% but I cant understand this as many basic items have increased almost 30-50%. When the hell is it going to stop or I really will be living on beans on toast every night(and even they've gone up lots!

I know how to cook, very well, just lack inspiration. I never mbuy jars of sauces, we make our own, curries etc. and for me to go to co op every day would cost me £4 bus fare so not very economical Grin

Mum is giving me her slow cooker too so that's good

alphabettyspagghetti · 20/08/2011 20:46

A tip if you use the bung it method...Write what you are doing down.

I once made a bloody fantasic meal but I didnt write it down so never managed to do it again. I have no idea what I used either.

maxybrown · 20/08/2011 20:47

we love fish pie, home made, but costs me about £9 or so to make it so that is a treat. DS loves fresh fish but not cheap

alphabettyspagghetti · 20/08/2011 20:48

I rarely buy jars of sauces and make my own curries too...but they are always good to have as a back up for one of those nights where you just cant be bloody bothered.

strictlovingmum · 20/08/2011 20:49

Chicken and leek pie, done with dark chicken meat (thighs) rather then breast, works out much cheaper, and it has a lot more flavour.
Someone up the tread mentioned aubergines, very versatile vegetables, relatively cheap, I do chuck steak, aubergines and barley stew, touch of cumin and paprika, and it is beautiful.
Aubergine can be used for veggie burgers, grill them on the girdled pan, thick slices, thickness of a average burger, pop them in the bun with all the usual burger condiments, they taste fantastic.

maxybrown · 20/08/2011 20:51

see I am a meat and 2 veg girl, Dh is a ham snadwich kind of guy and he would choose a cheap and I mean cheap ham sandwich over a throw together something with mince any night of the week! It would be cheaper too, but def not good for him so that's that! Our butchers chickens are £3.50 and lovely, really juicy...I alos started doing them in the pirex dish and they are meag moist now Grin guess slow cooker would do same

alphabettyspagghetti · 20/08/2011 20:52

Aubergine burgers! Never thought of that. Bet that would be nice if they were grilled or lightly fried with some spices...I dont know..er...cumin, little paprika, a little fennel...hmmmm...

maxybrown · 20/08/2011 20:53

I am making DH out to sound fussy now, he isn't really, but he does not like mince, aubergines or courgettes or tomato based dishes. He makes some cracking food when he wants to though!

maxybrown · 20/08/2011 20:57

But like I say he would eat them if he HAD to but thhe would rather have egg on toast or dippy eggs and soldiers - and he doesn't have beer or anything like that either!

alphabettyspagghetti · 20/08/2011 21:01

Bless ya, there's no need to defend your DH on here. Tell us what he doesnt like (like you have) and I'm sure we can all think of cheap meals you can do that will keep all of your family happy and throw in a few good idea for the rest of us to use too.

Maybe we should move this to the recipe section?

strictlovingmum · 20/08/2011 21:05

And another one with aubergines: wash and cut them lengthwise drizzled them with oil and put it under a hot grill, insides up for 8 to 10 minutes, once out, cool them down and with table spoon scoop out all the flesh in the bowl, mix in salt, finely chopped garlic and all the spice you like alphabettyspagghetti bit creme fresh, mash it all together with a fork and finally put it all back in the aubergine skin you saved, served with warm pitta bread, tasty.

alphabettyspagghetti · 20/08/2011 21:07

OOooh..that does sound nice.

Thanks SLM.

i spend a lot of time on the MSE forums so it's unlikely to be a lot of new stuff, but there might be the odd one or two thigns i haven't thought of and i'd love to see - i'm always up for finding new cheap recipe ideas!

A couple of cheap recipes for the slowcooker

Easy Pork Curry

2 pork chops/steaks per person, an onion, chopped, 2 tins of beans, 2 tins toms, a heaped teaspoon or two of curry powder mixed with half a cup of water. Bung it all into the slowcooker, cook on low for eight hours. Serve over mash or with crusty bread.

Beany Sausages

2-3 sausages per person. browned on hob (otherwise they look like flacid penis's (penii?) and really aren't appealing. chopped onion, couple of slices of smoky bacon, chopped, two tins of beans and one tin of mixed beans or kidney beans. Chuck it all in and leave on low for about 6 hours.

GreenEyesandHam · 20/08/2011 21:39

I think I've just forwarded the meal plan to raven, overthemill and gaaagh

KindKim · 20/08/2011 21:44

All very interesting stuff. feeling the pinch here too and my 3 dc's lover their food esp meat, fruit and veg. I used to have a really good handle on menu planning, food budget and cooking from scratch, but life events over the last yr have meant its slipped a bit.

I would really appreciate if someone could pm me the £30 meal plan to kick me back into touch please. Tia. Smile

ravenAK · 20/08/2011 21:48

Thanks greeneyesandham, received! & to the original author.

Would have to adapt it a bit as we are a household of vegetarians & fishocrites, but lots of useful ideas Smile

GreenEyesandHam · 20/08/2011 21:52

Glad you got it raven, I'm crap with this pm-ing stuff!

Sent it to you also KindKim. I hope

TrippleBerryFairy · 20/08/2011 21:54

In my opinion food here is cheap, I'd say the same about e.g. baby stuff such as nappies, clothes etc... I recently came back from one of the Eastern European countries - believe it or not, nappies are 2x more expensive there, nice Illy coffee which is ~£6 per tin here costs £9.5 there, shoes for 2 year old are ~£25 here and same price there, petrol is more expensive there. Fruit pouches for my son that I buy for £0.99 here are £1.80 there, I can buy a nice sweater for him at Debenhams for £16 here, there it's >£20. I could give many more examples. And all this when a salary of £800/month is considered a very decent one!

gaaagh · 20/08/2011 22:18

thanks you GreenEyesandHam - very much Smile

lookingforwork · 20/08/2011 22:20

Hi I guess it depends on where you live. I go to tesco's for nappies and economy value wipes at about 38p but very little else cereal if I cant find it cheaper. I buy all my fruit and veg at the bowl shops for example today I bought
2.5kg potatoes
2.5kg onions(all chopped and put into bags for the freezer to be used as needed)
10 apples
9 bananas
500g strawberries
1 watermelon
500g grapes
2 cucumbers
500g cherry tomatoes
500g blueberries
Total £10 Smile- god knows what it would have been in tescos £30? dont know what I'd do without bowl shops
Staples come from International food center/ Turkish supermarket and cleaning/toiletries/ junk food - crisps, biscuits, chocolate from the 99p shop
I used to shop for everything in Tesco but a weekly shop would come to about £150 where as the same is about £60/70 if I shop around.

overthemill · 20/08/2011 22:35

all received, thanks!

We are massively economising. some ideas for cheap meals:

'minestrone soup' using cooking bacon, can tomatoes, onions, and any veg you have around, eg broccoli, cabbage, carrots, plus handful pasta and can of beans (kidney, haricot). SErve with sprinkle of grated cheese

Cheese and potato pie: make shortcrust pastry with favourite recipe (250g plain flour, 125 fat eg marg/butter, tsp salt, tsp sugar, one egg yolk and 3 tbsp cold water). Divide into 2/3 and 1/3 and put on fridge for about half an hour. Then knead and roll out bigger piece for the bottom of the pie and the smaller for top of pie.

cook diced potato until tender (or use leftover) and mix with grated cheese (strong cheddar, you can use mix of cheddar and red leicester for colour) and chopped onion.

Put bigger circle into greased pie dish (but i use springform cake tin abou 9 inches across) . Put in potato/cheese mix and flatten a bit. Salt and pepper.

Put the smaller circle on op and I then kind of crimp the edges together, usually by rolling in the bottom around the op and thumb printing them if tha makes sense. Brush with milk. Bake for around 30 mins on 180 deg (elec) or 4 (gas).

Serve with salad or baked beans.

I also do similar with decent sausages (like tesco finest type when cheap). par boil potatoes, fry crumbled sausages (out of skins) with chopped onion, and herbs if you have any. Put on the bottom of pie dish (with pastry as above). Add layer of tomatoes (optional) op with pastry as before and bake 35 mins no 4 or 180.

Also chicken, sweetcorn pie. Cooked leftover chicken, can sweetcorn and stock made with half chicken cube half milk tablespoon flour to thicken (i do it in microwave).Use about half a pint all told it is to moisten not drown!

We all love these recipes!

KindKim · 20/08/2011 22:58

GreenEyesandHam I've got it, thank you very much.
