To think that this is the worst example of gender bollocks I've found?

So the Studio Christmas book arrived on my doorstep yesterday. I once ordered some personalised pencils and have forever more been on their radar.

I have had to put it away as I am so fucking angry that they are selling shite like this.
I want to be Girls dress up set

A horse rider, a maid, a nurse a ballerina or a beautician.

A Maid???? Yeah set the bar high on aspiration there you knobbers.

So what about the boys set? Is it as pathetic?

I want to be boys dress up

A businessman, a pilot, an astronaut, a postman and a policeman.

How the hell have we got to 2011 where this shit is still acceptable. I am not saying that girls shouldn't want to be those things, but why the hell isn't the girls "I want to be dress up set" - Doctor, business woman, pilot, astronaut?

Maid???? You are SHITTING me Studio!

Then I made the mistake of searching for girls roleplay and discovered they carried on with the theme. Sure. Why not. Let me set aspiration and expectation in my daughter by dressing her as a maid and giving her the laundry set complete with pink fucking whirlygig washing line. for the Girls roleplay

I don't often rant on here but Angry.

Fwiw - the person I am seeing doing most 'belittling' of those who disagree with her is Getabookaboutit, not SiamoFottuti.

mumblemumblethump · 18/08/2011 18:45

SiamoFottuti Thu 18-Aug-11 18:23:54
Whats pretentious about my name (other than its another thing you don't understand?)

And you are working to help re human trafficking etc how? Ah, I see, you're not. Toddle off then.

Just proves my point about rigorous debate vs belittling.
Yuk.
And I do know what your name means, SiamoFottuti.
How clever.

Cocoflower · 18/08/2011 18:45

"if they are happy to defend the belittling of another generation of women, I really don't care if I hurt their little feelings"

Oh now that is irony. "I dont care about belittling other women as my opinion is the only one and Im going to be nasty to anyone who disagrees".

What an absolute and utter hypocrite.

Lets stand up for one group of women but belittle the rest?

Do you enjoy coming across as nasty piece of work?

SiamoFottuti · 18/08/2011 18:48

Yes. I enjoy subverting the traditional notions of female behaviour, which expects us to be nice to people even if they are annoying and/or idiotic.

Do you enjoy whining about how got at you are? Grow up, you aren't a 5 year old in a princess outfit and plastic high heels now.

Cocoflower · 18/08/2011 18:51

The more you post the worst you are making yourself look.

Gotabookaboutit · 18/08/2011 18:55

Doesn't make me a ''better'' feminist or a ''proper'' one - it just makes me more effective at my job.

Glad you can link the sparkly tabard to genital mutilation. Can't really see it myself.

I think the over/pseudo intellectualising of something this simple turns the majority of women off feminism as does the sneary tone of many right on girlies or should I call them Honies?

And I'm more concerned about the crap attitude to manual, caring, and service jobs in general - things move on don't you know

pigletmania · 18/08/2011 18:55

The only fault of the advertising was making the outfits gender specific, they should have boys and girls in all the occupations. I once saw in the DM an article about an all female concorde crew ( pilots btw), I wished it was me sigh, if only i had done better at school and did not have SN

A lot of this is snobbery hidden behind the guise of feminisim.

Gotabookaboutit · 18/08/2011 18:58

''Yes. I enjoy subverting the traditional notions of female behaviour, which expects us to be nice to people even if they are annoying and/or idiotic. ''

lol so its ok for you but not me ????

Give me the intellectual low down on that please

SiamoFottuti · 18/08/2011 19:05

I'm terrified of your opinion of me, Coco.

Cocoflower · 18/08/2011 19:07

I make no apology for standing up for myself.I am entitled to defend myself agaisnt nasty and personal insults and comments that take pleasure in hurting people "if they are happy to defend the belittling of another generation of women, I really don't care if I hurt their little feelings". If you would like to defend and associate yourself with such a vile remark then that is your choice.

Cocoflower · 18/08/2011 19:08

"Could you maybe spend more time discussing the issues rather than personal comments on other posters?"

I award you the award for most ironic poster

Gotabookaboutit · 18/08/2011 19:11

and another award for hypocrite of the day !

Gotabookaboutit · 18/08/2011 19:13

If you are going to be our intellectual superior, you really need to get all your tautology sorted 1st

CRIKRI · 18/08/2011 19:26

NotQuiteSoDesperate, this "regression" is what worries me. I was in primary school in the 70's and by then, most of the worst examples of gender segregation in toys and books was being phased out. Even as a kid, I remember thinking some of the old books from the 50's and 60's still in the library with negative gender and racial depictions were "not right." It was the Sesame Street generation - everything in primary colours, diverse, vibrant, encouraging and fun. Dressing up and role play was more fluid and creative, not prescribed as it seems to be today.

There was an excellent article in the Independent last year (does quick search - yes, I found it!) The gender gap: Messages that can affect the way boys and girls grow up This quote from the article offers one idea as to why things appear to have moved backwards during the past 5 to 10 years.

Angela McRobbie, cultural theorist and author of The Aftermath of Feminism, believes the root of the problem is that so many of today's mums think of feminism as uncool ? "that it's no longer relevant and that it's associated with the boring tediousness of political correctness". She adds: "Because they don't want to be associated with it, they have become fearful of speaking out about the return of gender inequalities. What consumer culture has done is come along and exploit that, so that today's non-feminine little girls are penalised."

CRIKRI · 18/08/2011 19:30

I think that holds some water - particularly the heavy duty marketing of gender-specific products. If a family has both boys and girls, they hope to sell them a normal lego set and a pink one, a normal Scrabble board and a pink one, boys dressing up clothes and girls ones - rather than one lot that children of both genders can play with.

SiamoFottuti · 18/08/2011 19:30

I don't debate with people who start a sentence with "lol", gotabook. And still whining about nasty people being mean to you, Coco. Diddums. Hmm

Thanks for the artickle CRIKRI, interesting reading.

Gotabookaboutit · 18/08/2011 19:39

Your right you don't debate ! And up yours for the snobbery lol

ThePosieParker · 18/08/2011 19:40

Ambitions come early for some, it's not just money and what Mummy and Daddy do that sees more 'rich kids' in brilliant jobs and great careers, it's the idea that they can. Why do girls that can get nursing degrees and become nurses when their male counterparts more often become doctors? Not saying there's anything wrong with nursong but it's certainly something that divides gender.

Christ and lego is all about being a hero for boys and making a pink house for girls.

ThePosieParker · 18/08/2011 19:44

[checks the window for a full moon]

Gotabookaboutit · 18/08/2011 19:46

The Aftermath of Feminism has some very valid points about the irrelevance of what many see as rabid feminism that seeks to preach and ram silly pointless things down our throats.

''so that today's non-feminine little girls are penalised." ????? How ???

EuphemiaMcGonagall · 18/08/2011 19:46

I bought DD the pink lego box because it was the only one Toys R Us had for building houses. The rest were Star Wars or Pirates or Monsters or other violent rubbish.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 18/08/2011 19:47

"You're right." Hmm

Gotabookaboutit · 18/08/2011 19:51

And Posie -Since the early 1990s more than half of all new medical students have been female ??

The question should be why aren't there more male nurses???
