To expect a £425 pair of shoes to last one wear

You would be best off going to Jones the Bootmakers or Barratts for a pair of shoes, at least they last longer

I used to have a pair of loafers once from Ravel in the 90's which had a leather sole, lasted a very long time.

I used to be an Imelda Marcos clone buy lovely expensive (for me) leather-soled shoes, brands like Carvella, Roland Cartier, Kurt Geiger. They did not disintegrate with wear. Hell, I used to run for trains wearing open-waisted court ankle-straps, snapped a shank or two (my cobbler loved me, such interesting repairs to break the monotony), but never wore out leather soles in less than a month.

These Jimmy Choos sound more like the sort of dancing slippers worn to balls in the early 1800's, made from the type of leather used for gloves, which would only last one night.

belledechocchipcookie · 14/08/2011 16:40

She shouldn't have worn them outside, the leather has been damaged. She's obviously never had shoes like that before. Wink

LolaRennt · 14/08/2011 16:43

I'd expect a £425 pair of shoes to be able to make my supper and clean the kitchen and give a really good backrub

LolaRennt · 14/08/2011 16:47

In fairness the poor woman did buy them for her wedding day (mine were £25 from Next) but I won't judge others for going a bit over the top

LynetteScavo · 14/08/2011 16:47

I don't think you are supposed to go Tesco's shopping in Jimmy Choo's Hmm Waitrose, maybe.

And I always presumed people who could afford JC's could afford to jump in a taxi....not faff around on the underground. Or have a chauffeur.

pigletmania · 14/08/2011 16:49

belle they are meant to be worn fgs not kept in a cabinet, the person did not buy them from a dancing shoes, and there was no specific instructions with them not to wear them outside I don't think. If you cant wear them how you normally would, what's the point in buying them? If the shop assistant on buying them, informed me that they will need to be resoled before wearing them, I would not be buying them.

It's a wind up piglet.

I have a couple of pairs of Emma Hope shoes, they have leather soles and they do not look like that. I've worn them outside, the leather does develop indents from the pebbles on the streets and it does go a little harder but otherwise they are fine.

Mandy2003 · 14/08/2011 17:09

And she wore them on the Tube, to Hampstead! As I recall, that is one of the longest escalators on the whole underground network and escalators are instant death to slim or stiletto heels of all kinds!

Also, why should she expect something that is basically an evening sandal for wearing on the Red Carpet, carpeted restaurant etc, to stand up to walking as far as she did?

She's nuts!

pigletmania · 14/08/2011 17:11

And they charge someones monthly wage packet for shoes Shock. I tell you, they are not worth it!

I got mine in a shoe shop sale, £315 reduced to £20, bargain! They don't stock them now, sadly.

youarekidding · 14/08/2011 17:22

My mum has a pair very like that - probably more £40 though, and wears them lots and they've lasted.

bemybebe · 14/08/2011 17:31

I have many pairs of shoes from equally high-end designers (sergio rossi, prada, christian louboutin, emma hope, manolo, ysl etc) and they are all wearing very well. never had jimmy choos and judging by the article and the comments here, will probably never buy any.

I own a few pairs of Jimmy Choos and some have more robust soles than others. It depends on they style and type of shoe. I am however not disappointed in the quality or durability of any of them. Where some show signs of lots of wear and tear it is because I have done something to them.

My oldest pair is now over 10 years old and still in very good condition, they have obviously been worn and in that time have had new soles and heels but I'd expect that. I don't go shopping, walk the dog or do the school run in my evening sandals though - maybe that's why mine are so far surviving.

Other pairs I've got have had minor heel repairs when they've been scuffed or I've caught the heel in a grid or between paving flags. It happens but that doesn't make them not fit for purpose or shoddy quality.
The shoe shown in the article has clearly been damaged by the owner. Those heels didn't scuff themselves in thin air. Also the chunk of leather taken from the sole is not wear and tear - it's been repeatedly put under pressure to do that.

They are very clear in store and online about different shoes for different occasions - if you visit a Jimmy Choo outlet or look at their website you see that boots, day shoes, statement, bridalwear, evening etc... are all very different styles and the thickness and durability of sole does vary according to the type.

If the shoes are genuinely faulty Jimmy Choo would have the means and technology to test and inspect them and their customer service is usually impeccable. I can't see them not providing a replacement, repair or refund if that is the case.

Tortington · 14/08/2011 18:37

i know its all relative, but i simply cannot summon up sympathy for someone who spends half the value of dh's car on shoes.

auroraday · 14/08/2011 18:43

the shoes last longer than that - they just need resoling. It's the same with any shoe with a leather sole (LKB, etc). you can get away with it but they need resoling more often. This is a complete non-article.
But if you are happy in a pair that costs a few quid and you feel stylish, you go ahead, each to her own. I have never seen the point of hideously expensive flats (i.e. £2-300+) but a quality pair of heels makes a huge difference compared to a low end pair IMO.

auroraday · 14/08/2011 18:44

Also why have a picture of Jimmy Choo? He's had nothing to do with the company for years and years.

cardibach · 14/08/2011 19:15

Makes me glad I have huge feet (size 9) and therefore no possibility of buying designer shoes!

mrsshears · 14/08/2011 19:36

I have a pair of gucci knee lengh boots which i wear for special occasions such as nights out, weddings, that sort of thing.
I paid about £500 for them in 2003 and they look like new, that said if i wore them on a more day to day basis i'm sure they wouldnt look nearly as good but i'm still really pleased with how well thay have worn.

CHOOGIRL · 14/08/2011 19:40

I have a few pairs (as my name would suggest) and have never had a problem. My boots have lasted about 5 years and been re-heeled, but never re-soled.

I did have a Louboutin heel snap on me once after I'd had them about a year- took it straight back to the shop and they replaced with a brand new pair.

lady007pink · 14/08/2011 19:42

Since I started working in 1993, I don't think I've spent anywhere near that sum total for all the shoes I bought!

My wedding dress didn't even cost that! (Mind you, it was half price in a sale Grin )

DontCallMePeanut · 14/08/2011 19:45

Christ, I'm heavy footed as it is (dyspraxia) and wear through shoes quickly. After 5 mins in those, I'd have nothing but the straps left Grin

monkeyfacegrace · 14/08/2011 20:05

I have numerous pairs of Louboutins (my weakness), and the red sole rubs off after one or two wears. I have them resoled with red rubber instantly, not a problem, just makes them last longer. If I can afford to spend 1K + on a pair of shoes, a few more quid on new soles isnt exactly a problem.

ragged · 14/08/2011 20:13

Women have been made to lust after beautiful looking shoes that cost £425 a pair and last for day.

Nobody made them, they choose to be manipulated. It's easy to ignore marketing hype; most people manage it quite well. I don't even think they actually look nice (they look flimsy & impractical & not even very pretty.
