AIBU to think this facebook 'baby progress' status thingy is wrong?

My friend has a facebook alert/status thing which uploads every week saying 'week X, the baby is/has...........' with a long description of the developments. But in week 25, it says 'Only 15 more weeks to go If my baby boy were born today, he would probably survive the ICU, as his tiny lungs CAN breathe'. AIBU to think this is rubbish? How many premature babies actually survive being born at 25 weeks? I am probably over analysing but it just seems to be a very lazy wording.

I don't like those tickers, and I think off-hand mention of the possibility of the babies dying and of very early premature birth is tasteless. But I don't think this one is technically incorrect.

As I recall from the EPICure study a few years ago, at 25 weeks two thirds of babies survive. 24 weeks is the dramatic cut off where survival rates are low and not really improving, above that things pick up quite quickly. I'll try and find a link to the study.

YABU IMO!!! The ticker you talk about does say 'probably' survive...which I believe is statistically accurate!?! If you don't like it you have the choice of removing it from your feed or deleting your 'friend' if it bothers you that much. I have the same ticker on my fb account and it is meant to be a bit of fun! I understand that not all of my fb friends will want to read it and would assume that any that are not interested in it just ignore it, not spend there weekend in forums posting about it!!!! Your post makes you sound very miserable and tbh I an surprised that you have any friends if u take everything this seriously...can't u just be happy for her and understand that she (and anyone else who is using this ticker) are obviously just very excited and happy to be expecting!!!

You're all being so harsh! so she's pregnant and is excited about it, so what? let her enjoy it fgs.

I hide this app too, it's super annoying.

Kayano · 14/08/2011 09:05

I use it because otherwise people keep asking me about my pregnancy and it is a total hate of mine when people put pregnancy and baby related statuses all the time.

I'd much rather have that updater and then use my status for useful stuff like 'kayano had an itchy arse'? I dunno

OracleInaCoracle · 14/08/2011 09:11

Another who hides the app here. Utterly pointless and irritating!

I found a link, just a beeb article:
news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7340288.stm

It says 25 weeks had a 67% survival rate in 2008. But that's only for babies that make it to the Neo-natal unit. Of the births studied (all at 26 weeks or less) a quarter didn't make it to neo-natal care. There is no breakdown of survival between birth and neo-natal care by gestation age so can't work it out for sure, but it's unlikely the 25 week rate is worse than the average so it would still be above the 50% rate (just) over all.

I think it's all a bit depressing to analyze it like this though. Important in the context of medical care, but rather missing the point in the context of a friend being pregnant.
