To think that dressing up as a 'sexy school girl' is...

... A bit creepy and weird?

Have just received an invite to a friends hen night in a few weeks time. The dress code is Sexy School Girls and I am cringing already. I don't mind dressing up, but why school girls??

I hate drawing attention to myself at the best of times but walking around London dressed like a total twat is filling me with dread.

So what do you think? AIBU to suggest something simple like all wearing the same colour?

This wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

No peado is going to start leching on you just because you are wearing a dodgy school uniform, and no other man is going to start perving over schoolgirls because he has seen some adults in town dressed up as schoolgirls.

I fully understand why people find it odd, but the reality is harmless.

If you feel too uncomfortable op, you could dress up as the teacher!

WhoseGotMyEyebrows · 13/08/2011 17:44

PercyFilth Most school kids stop wearing uniform though at 16 not 18.

This is what I remember school girls looking like. I wore an ankle length skirt so the whole "sexy school girl" thing has always seemed odd to me.

jenniec79 · 13/08/2011 17:51

WGME - not all though - we were definately in uniform to 18 (and sexy would have been a definite improvement - hell the loophole of wearing mouldy-smelling cadet kit on a friday was an improvement!)

LolaRennt · 13/08/2011 17:51

Why not go as a nerdy school girl, full length skirt, NHS specs, freckles, plaits? Just look confused when you arrive!

AnyFucker · 13/08/2011 17:53

I just wouldn't go

Vote with your feet

These stupid dress up hen nights are ridiculous

PercyFilth · 13/08/2011 18:32

"Most school kids stop wearing uniform though at 16 not 18"

They may do now, but that's irrelevant. This is fancy dress. It's not real. Burglars don't wear striped shirts, eyemasks and carry a bag marked 'swag'. It's a comic-strip convention - as someone said, it's like St Trinians.

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 13/08/2011 18:38

Oh, I get right on my feminist high horse about this issue!

No, YANBU. I wouldn't go. I just couldn't do it, out of principle. If she asks for a reason I'd be honest ? not slagging off her choice of theme to her face anyway but just saying you don't feel comfortable with it and don't want to dress like that. She can take it from there ? suggest you come anyway, think about changing the theme, shrug and say it's a pity you won't be there, whatever.

TartyMcFarty · 13/08/2011 18:41

I suppose my response is a bit po-faced izzy. Maybe I'd just give it a miss but explain why!

AnyFucker · 13/08/2011 18:45

oh, I wouldn't have an issue with being completely po-faced about this

I just think these women look utterly ridiculous and demean themselves by doing this kinda stuff

it's just so attention-seeking, isn't it and the "attention" is for all the wrong reasons, and probably going to be from all the "wrong" kind of men

catgirl1976 · 13/08/2011 18:48

I wouldn't go. although its just a taste issue for me - not a feminist one.

AnyFucker · 13/08/2011 18:52

it is both, for me

I wouldn't attend a dress-up hen do dressed as a Vicar or summat, either

it's infantile, IMO

children play dress-up, not fully-grown adults

robotlollypopman · 13/08/2011 18:52

Does dressing up with sexy bunny ears encourage bestiality?

AnyFucker · 13/08/2011 18:56

maybe not, but it makes you look like a prat

worraliberty · 13/08/2011 18:58

I don't have an issue with the 'school girl' thing as such... as I think it's just St Trinians copycat stuff and nothing to do with people perving over real school girls.

But I do wonder how some of these 30 something fat, lumpy women think they look even remotely attractive... or anything like a school girl when they hit the town on a hen night Lol.

Bulmers · 13/08/2011 18:58

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates fancy dress and refuses to attend fancy dress events.

catgirl1976 · 13/08/2011 18:59

Thats my issue. Its tacky - any theme - not the school girls particularly - but any dress up druken hen do. Just yuck.

AnyFucker · 13/08/2011 18:59

I hate them with a vengeance tbh

so cringeworthy

and I am not averse to making a prat of myself in other ways Smile

dontjumplease · 13/08/2011 19:09

I think like someone else said, this gets vastly overthought, analysed and isn't a feminist issue TBH.
If you want to dress up, do it. If you don't then dont. Simple.
Don't read into it what isn't there, and make the others feel like they are 'bad' for joining in. And don't suggest they change the theme, it's not your decision!!!!
We dressed up as school girls for a friends hen do as a joke, because we're teachers. It was a laugh, nothing more or less.

catgirl1976 · 13/08/2011 19:11

I don't mind fancy dress - its just fancy dress hen dos i dont like. Fancy dress parties are fine. I think its the drukenly staggering the streets whilst in fancy dress i object to. I wouldn't go to a fancy dress hen do myself but I wouldnt make anyone else feel bad for going

TheMonster · 13/08/2011 19:11

YANBU. I'm not comfortable with fully grown men finding school uniforms sexy.

hairfullofsnakes · 13/08/2011 19:22

I agree - sexy schoolgirl is very creepy and just wrong! I have no problem with dressing up or fetish gear but no no to sexy schoolgirl - ughh

catgirl1976 · 13/08/2011 19:31

Checked with DH

Women is school girl outfits can be very sexy (he cites cast of St Trinians film as example)

School children NOT sexy at all as they are children

He also points out - women in "Naughty Nurses" outfits sexy- real life nurses in real NHS uniforms not ususally. Same with nuns.

He is very able to make the distinction.

catgirl1976 · 13/08/2011 19:31

sorry - women in school girl outfits

garlicbutter · 13/08/2011 19:39

What do you normally wear for a night on the lash, OP?

Wear that, with the addition of a striped tie and straw boater. Doesn't really matter if it's only a nod to the theme, the main thing is joining your friend on her big night out.
