I have five weeks to save a rent depost for a larger house. I have three DS and twins on the way would I BU to serve them homemade veg and lentil soup 3 nights a week and also not buy junk such as crisps biscuits and juice for the next five weeks to give them a better home. The reason I am asking is that my mother has reacted like I have suddenly decided to feed them on bread and water and has went to supermarket and bought some "essentials" these include puddings diluting juice polish and kitchen roll. The last two were in response to me saying that i was sure there was some cleaning stuff I could do with out. AIBU??

electra · 10/09/2011 10:06

I would love someone to serve me home made soup 3 nights a week!

FabbyChic · 10/09/2011 10:07

Soup is a snack it isn't a meal.

euphrosyne · 10/09/2011 10:07

well done you!

Sandalwood · 10/09/2011 10:09

Well done :)
If it's a chunky soup wrap it in pastry the next day for vegetable cornish pasties.

electra · 10/09/2011 10:12

Well done btw! Just read your update :)

eurochick · 10/09/2011 11:26

Well done!

We often have a chunky soup for dinner. Not really to economise but just because we like it! Our favourites are chorizo with bean and lentil (I don't eat the chorizo because I don't like the texture but I like the flavour) and roast leftovers (just tip in the meat, veg and roast potatoes). It's lovely with warm homemade bread. Mmmmm.

There was a survey a while ago that showed that the same meal served both as a meal and "souped" kept people fuller longer the latter way.

flack · 10/09/2011 11:40

Not only are you not unreasonable, but may I come next time you go on an economy drive? I love soup :).

Ifancyashandy · 10/09/2011 12:29

I often have soup for dinner - love it! If I buy a fresh one, I tend to add a load of green veg to it too. Really filling and hearty. Apparently not only does the liquid fill you but also due to the visual aspect of the volume of soup, the brain 'sees' it as even more filling or some such.

Am now inspired to make a heart veg soup for dinner. With crusty bread. And butter. And cheese.

fatlazymummy · 10/09/2011 14:43

My Mum used to do soup [made out of a packet] with homemade dumplings. That would be dinner for a family of 7. And apparently beans on wholemeal toast is perfectly nutritious as well.
When my kids were small I used to do pasta shapes with grated cheese melted into it when we were skint. My ex used to have soup with potatoes in it when he was a kid.
Regarding soups and stews, you can always add beans of any sort to bulk it up.

Clockface · 10/09/2011 14:56

Sounds lovely. When I make soup for dinner I nearly always make a homemade sponge cake for pud, with some stewed fruit on the bottom and custard. That is a really nice cheap meal, and as others have said, much better than a lot of the world's population.

missmogwi · 10/09/2011 15:04

It sounds great. I really want some homemade soup now!
Goodluck in your new homeSmile

It's only through being skint or just cutting back I realised how much money is wasted on the food shop. Also, we seem to eat much healthier when I'm counting the pennies. Lesson learnt!

vanimal · 10/09/2011 15:17

Well done, that's great that you tightened your belts and got on with it, it's a great learning for your children too, that you can get what you what with some determination. You sound fab.

Now can you please share your soup recipe with me, I really want some :)

Gluttondressedaslamb · 10/09/2011 18:19

Yes YABU to serve soup three nights a week - in ours it`s five! I vary the soup a bit though to stop it getting too boring, although we will eat the same one twice in a row. I find tomato and lentil is a big favourite, so is minestrone, especially if you can find alphabet pasta to put in it.
Good luck with the saving!

ike1 · 10/09/2011 18:23

YANBU only bring some over ere Ive got the flu

Gluttondressedaslamb · 10/09/2011 18:23

Sorry, just read your update, well done! You must be feeling very proud of yourself :)

aquashiv · 10/09/2011 18:24

Mine would turn their nose up but in terms of health its fine far better than some cheap processed meal.

SpamMarie · 10/09/2011 18:25

Crisps are not an essential part of anyone's diet. Nor are they even particularly filling. The kids will survive!

I think if you had the same soup three times a week, it would get a little dull. We used to eat soup every other day when I was a kid (pretty common in French culture) and we'd alternate between every kind of vegetable, vermivelli and chicken (made with the leftover chicken carcass) and the not-so-french leek and potato. Add some bread and fruit and you'll be far from starving.

FootprintsOnTheMoon · 10/09/2011 18:36

I find kids are very conservative, and are less likely than adults to mind samey meals.

If they are at school during the day, do they have school dinner?

In my household we'd mix it up with pasta &tomato veg sauce; vegetable cobbler and such like - but I don't think there is anything wrong with your suggestion.

Swarski · 10/09/2011 18:46

Sounds great and not at all unreasonable...would go down a storm in our house! I would add pasta one day, lentils another and maybe rice on the third (although my DS thinks that rice in soup is a bit yukky)....
