you know that fresh mash you get in the shops that you microwave for 3 mins

for somereason i feel v lazy guilty having it, as if peeling spuds is just too much hard work

dont feel to guilty about preperpaed veg or salad though

I don't buy ready made mash. But I don't make my own pasta.

FellatioNelson · 11/08/2011 21:14

If I make soup I try to keep it low-carb, but I often plop in one or two nuggets of frozen mash towards the end as it thickens it up really well with the need to make if floury. And when making industrial quantities of soup, the carb content of two bricquettes of frozen mash is neither here nor there.

FellatioNelson · 11/08/2011 21:14

WITHOUT the need to make it floury.

redexpat · 11/08/2011 23:00

agentzigzag did we go to the same school? LOVED the pink custard!

OP YANBU. I am rather partial to the stuff from sainsburys. Don't understand why you would bother with peeling, cooking, mashing, washing up after lumpy dinner.

mrsdonkeybucket · 11/08/2011 23:04

Ready made mash is good.

DH had a sulk tonight as we had pork chops with roasties (he wanted mash but got out-voted).

Was thinking I might get ready-made liver and bacon and ready made mash as a 'treat' for him tomorrow, to make up for missing out ! (Sainsburys L&B has teeny onions in it, and cheesy mash).

We used to eat Deb (same as Smash I think) straight from the packet.

Boil kettle, open packet, pour in water and dinner is DONE.

Total washing up is one spoon.

Happy days...

Ricers are the way to get guaranteed non-lumpy mashed potatoes - stainless steel can go in the dishwasher: www.amazon.co.uk/Grunwerg-Stainless-Potato-Ricer-discs/dp/B004FQ05AU/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1313100403&sr=8-13

I sometimes buy frozen ready-made and use it for cottage pies or duchesse potatoes, but in general I don't like mash that is too smooth or has been made with too much liquid.

Of the packet instant mash, IMO, Mr Mash is the only one worth buying and a plateful would complement your bisto gravy Agent - have you tried Bovril beef gravy granules? Yum!

Mash chez izzy is made with a generous quantity of butter, a little cream, and loads of freshly ground black pepper.

Cicks convert links..... Hey Presto:

moonshine · 11/08/2011 23:35

Can i just say from bitter experience that it is perfectly possible to make lumpy mash using a ricer.

notlettingthefearshow · 11/08/2011 23:42

I love cooking and don't buy prepared stuff myself, but think it's a brilliant invention for people who dislike/aren't too good at cooking. Why not? The high quality stuff (not smash! But I like pot noodles so I'm not judging!) is hard to beat.

Pawsnclaws · 11/08/2011 23:43

Never tried ready made mashed potato, but I love ready made mashed swede and carrot.

School mash (ice cream scooped!) was hideous. I used to cut my spam fritters into tiny pieces and hide them under an igloo of lumpy mash, as we were allowed to leave one item.

AgentZigzag · 11/08/2011 23:48

If your school experience left a slightly bitter taste in your mouth that's permeated your adult life redexpat, then we probably did Grin

Thanks for that link izzy, I was wondering what a riser was and it was far too much effort to click on google Grin

I had to google what a citrus reamer was on another thread, I had no idea I was so ignorant in the kitchen implement department.

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 11/08/2011 23:58

Fellatio that is a good tip re. the soup!

I make really good mash, but it is a faff so I only do it on special occasions, or to go on top of a cottage pie.

Waitrose ready made is yummy.

limitedperiodonly · 12/08/2011 00:00

Not judging but mash is really easy.

1/2lb King Edwards for two. Peel (1 minute) Boil 15-20 mins. Drain. Steam for a minute or so. Salt and pepper. Butter, but I prefer creme fraiche ( get me), bash up with a fork.

20p for potato. 10p at the most for the butter. Add mustard/spring onions for taste sensation.

How much does ready-made mash cost?

Bandwithering · 12/08/2011 00:01

I thought you meant smash! now that is gross. but the 'tray' of mash from a supermarket fridge is not the same. I really like the carrot mash some of them do too.

billflat123 · 19/03/2017 11:36

yeomanfoods.com , now available as an instant fix.

MatildaTheCat · 19/03/2017 11:54

Love ready made mash in all forms but Waitrose bubble and squeak is the business as is their root veg mash. More tasty than plain potato IMO. Buttery mash is yuk.

I have some strange frozen potato in the freezer in sausage like pieces, has anyone any words of advice on these? They frighten me.

DaisyBlameless · 19/03/2017 11:57

What a strange thread to resurrect Grin

Againagain97 · 19/03/2017 14:06

You are all being VVVVU!

Mash is the food of the devil (raised in Irish family, which served mash about five days of the week!) its vile!!

ConfusedConfusedConfused

brasty · 19/03/2017 14:07

I would feel too lazy to buy this. So we don't have mash very often.

ellenanora5 · 19/03/2017 14:29

Matilda, bung it in a dish, cover it with foil and put it in the oven, give it a good stir half way through, what brand is it, some of them are lovely.

ellenanora5 · 19/03/2017 14:30

Or microwave it, but cover it with cling film.

Waltons · 19/03/2017 17:18

Some dumb questions about potato ricers, if anyone has nothing better to do than answer them:

  • Do they process much at a time?
  • Doesn't the potato go cold while you're ricing it?
  • Would they also do swede, turnips, etc?
Blondeshavemorefun · 19/03/2017 21:07

love ready made mash, whether coop/m&s etc

costs £1 so £2 for df and I, yes you can buy 4 large potatoes for 69p? and peel, boil, mash etc
