to take a sick baby to a festival?

Have to make a decision on this quite shortly as we should be going in the morning.

On Tuesday night 12 month old ds was sick a couple of times. Since then he has been hot and grumpy, not much of an appetite and his sleep has been all over the place - he was up half of last night and has slept most of today. He hasn't been sick since but is obviously not himself, although he did have breakfast and had a bowl of pasta this afternoon.

We are supposed to be going to a festival this weekend. Tickets were expensive, DP has taken Friday and Monday off work etc. It's more my thing than DP's, my friends are going so he wouldn't want to go without me, however I am breastfeeding so don't really want to go without ds.

Currently I am leaning towards all going, taking some calpol with us and hoping for the best. DP things he should stay at home with the baby and I should go on my own.

OK, we're taking him down there now. Thanks for all the advice.

I didn't think ear infections were viral. My daughter always had antibiotics for them.

Pandemoniaa · 11/08/2011 18:22

Same as my son, Imperial.

GPs just seem to hand out antibiotics all the time for them, despite the NHS website stating that most Ear infections clear up on their own. Good luck OP!

My doctor advises me to give it a few days, and if it hasn't cleared up on it's own, then it probably needs antibiotics.
My dd had a really bad ear infection in January - was sick, but then still wasn't quite herself for a few days. I thought she was better so sent her in to school, where she developed a temperature. She even went deaf in one ear for a while. Soon cleared up with antibiotics.

can you go and if he seems to get more poorly, isnt happy you can all come home or dh bring him home?

also he may be grizzly today but kids get well again pretty quick so he may be fine tomorrow or saturday.

good luck hope he gets better asap xx

skybluepearl · 11/08/2011 18:58

if it's just a sickness bug and he hasn't been sick for 48 hours/is now eating than i would go. take him with you

if it's an ear infection than you may be given antibiotics which will make him feels lots better quickly - maybe 2 days time he will be much much perkier

my young child became ill with flu while we were camping once and it was hard going. if you are over the worst though then maybe it will be ok - you should just make a decision Friday morning.

It's not Beacons Festival is it? That's been cancelled cos of heavy flooding.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 11/08/2011 19:03

I'd go but prepare for a quick getaway if you need to. Would your friends be willing to pack down your tent, bring it back for you for eg if he gets really miserable/you're desperate from lack of sleep and need to get home fast?

We've always been given antibiotics for ear infections for DS2 (1 doesn't seem prone) but he is partially hearing so I think they are a bit nervous about letting something go on for a while.

He'll probably be fine and have a whale of a time.

Just got back from the walk-in centre and he's chirpy as anything now! They reckoned he had an infection in one ear so we've been given amoxycilin.

Our plan now is to assume we're going tomorrow - if we don't make the coach in the morning we'll get a train in the afternoon. We can probably get 2-3 doses into him before we go so hopefully it will make a difference. The festival site is about an hour's drive from my parents, so we will warn them and they should be able to come and rescue us if necessary.

Just make sure that you can keep the ab's cool while you're away.

Hope he picks up soon and you all have a geat weekend

RitaMorgan · 11/08/2011 21:13

He's been much better this evening, so hopefully we'll have a good night.
