To think air fresheners are for dirty people who don't open windows enough?

They are so hideous, and actually make my eyes smart, as I discovered when house hunting.

The only time (apart from obvious causes that were easy to remedy, like an un-emptied nappy bin, or cooking smells) that I've noticed a gross smell in my house was when the spare room wasn't getting hoovered regularly enough, so we just stepped up the cleaning.

All the adverts for them, please can't people just air their homes more??

I hate air fresheners but I love burning soy wax tarts, they smell amazing

worldgonecrazy · 11/08/2011 14:32

I hate the smell of air fresheners and car air fresheners make me feel nauseous. SiL loves them and I always have to hide them in the cupboard when we visit.

Having said all this, my husband came home from work very late last night and decided to make himself some kippers. Half an hour later I had to go through the house with the Neutradol spray to get rid of the smell, which was that bad it woke me up. This is the first time I've sprayed freshener in the house for quite a few months.

BadTasteFlump · 11/08/2011 14:32

YABU - But it depends on the kind of air freshener IMO. The artificial ones are all horrible I think, but I do sprinkle essential oils around the house - particularly lavendar in our bedroom, just cos I like it Smile. But I do open windows regularly....

Febreeze is horrible, it just reminds me of the smell of somebody trying to cover up fag smells!

WorzselMummage · 11/08/2011 14:33

Why is it that man poo smells so much worse I wonder.

i think the only thing that would neutralise my husbands man poo aroma would be setting fire to the toilet, i swear he eats dog food at work!

BadTasteFlump · 11/08/2011 14:36

worzsel I didn't know it was supposed to Blush

babycham42 · 11/08/2011 14:36

Thing is, I can squirt air freshener at man poo smell from a distance but you have to get too up close and personal for my liking to try the match trick.Fortunately,my sh*t smells of roses Smile

I loathe artificial air-"fresheners" - they make me gag. I don't mind ones based on natural essential oils, so long as they don't use any of the heavy-based floral ones (jasmine, niaouli, ylangylang) as they give me severe headaches; as do stargazer lilies, hyacinths and jasmine flowers.

I have a fabulous room spray that neutralises DH's stink instantly - it's essential oil based and works an absolute treat! but it doesn't hang around like artificial air-"fresheners" do - it neutralises and is off.

I am actually allergic to neutradol - it makes my throat itch and swell up - it's banned wherever I am.

oldmum42 · 11/08/2011 14:37

They smell awful, make my eyes run, give me and DS1 headaches and wheeze. Had to keep telling my relative not to use them after DS1 taken to hospital twice with Bronchitis during holiday visits- she thought she was doing us a favour by spraying the entire house with cans of the stuff to mask the (barely noticeable) smell of dog.

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 11/08/2011 14:37

Men on average eat more meat = stinkier poo. And they also sit there longer.
They are only used in the loo in my house, and only the pump sprays which last for ages, not evil aerosols.
Matches, candles, open windows, all effective but can be tricky re: security and child safety!
I would never have a Glade Plug-In or anything like that around the house.

Ormirian · 11/08/2011 14:38

Yes to opening windows more!

I think that even in the best-regulated houses smells can develop (glares hard at DH and dog!) but best response is fresh air and a good breeze Wink

Adding the smell of chemically created perfumes isn't really helping.

Chandon · 11/08/2011 14:39

I use Febreze in my car as the DC get car sick rather a lot...

And my car will never smell "nice" ever again, but the febreze helps a bit.

Thumbwitch · 11/08/2011 14:39

Forgot to say - OP, YABU. People use them for all sorts of reasons, many of whom have their windows/doors open a lot.

ShatnersBassoon · 11/08/2011 14:39

By that logic, perfume is only used by people who don't wash their bodies enough.

Some people use home fragrance to disguise unpleasant smells, some use it because they like their house to be perfumed.

WorzselMummage · 11/08/2011 14:39

We eat very little meat and my husbands arse smells like a sewer.

Blurgh.

RitaMorgan · 11/08/2011 14:40

Surely spraying chemicals around isn't a good idea if you have asthma or allergies?

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 11/08/2011 14:42

Reminds me of a funny incident at a neighbours' Christmas drinks where suddenly there was a smell of burning, which worried some of the guests, particularly an older deaf man. There was quite a buzz around the room and the host and hostess were alerted. After quite a few minutes of discussion the hostess didn't quite know what to say except the truth - her dh had gone upstairs for a poo and lit a match to hide the smell.

stinkyfluffycat · 11/08/2011 14:42

YANBU. I'm quite slatternly, but even I think that if your house smells bad maybe you should clean it, and get rid of the smell rather than try and cover it up with an equally nasty chemical smell?

The smells always get mixed up to me so that if someone has covered up cat pee with Febreze then Febreze will henceforth smell of cat pee to me whenever I smell it.
Anyway, on the subject of Febreze, does anyone really think 'Hmm. My sofa smells. Should I wash the covers? Nah, I'll just spray some stuff on top of the dirt'?

And don't get me started on bloody Oust. It DOESN'T remove the smell, and it DOES smell itself. Bleurk.

And Magic Trees make me feel sick. And cheap vanilla - scented candles.

Ahhh. I feel better after that Smile

oldmum42 · 11/08/2011 14:42

Hi THUMBWITCH, I thought it was just me with Lilies and headaches! In fact the
Smell of them makes me want to throw up as well, can't believe most people thing they smell wonderful. I am always saying to people (if they give me flowers) Oh, I love the LOOK of Lilies, but sadly the perfume from them gives me headache which is a shame.... People listen to the first part and not the second......maybe I need to be less tactful!

babycham42 · 11/08/2011 14:44

What about fart smells? Surely the match trick would be out and out DANGEROUS!!!!!!

TimeWasting · 11/08/2011 14:47

I like scented candles, and used to love incense, but chemical air fresheners don't smell nice.

Altinkum, people with asthma shouldn't really be using chemical air fresheners either.

lockets, I certianly did live in a house with damp, left windows open as much as possible.

AmberLeaf · 11/08/2011 14:48

What's all this nonsense about 'manpoo'?

My shit stinks too.

I believe in equality me.

TimeWasting · 11/08/2011 14:49

ShatnersBassoon, that's what perfume was for in ye olden days.
