Aibu to think this was bad of nationwide.?

I'm on holiday, on my own with dd. In uk but far from home. My nationwide card appears to have been stopped, won't go into an ATM machine and I've tried several but I can use it in shops.

So I ring up nationwide to ask what is happening. I'm hoping it's not been cloned. If it has I understand why it's been stopped but for peace of mind would like to know hoe much has been taken, etc. If it's been stopped due to unusual activity I was hoping to say, hey I'm on holiday, unstop it.

So I go throu answering questions. I can answer most of them, dob, mothers maiden name, postcode, yes I have another service with you, email address. However I have no idea what year I opened my nationwide account nor do I know what my overdraft is. They can see in the however many years I have had the account I've never gone overdrawn so if I don't use it why would I know the limit. How many people know the year they opened the bank account.

So they refuse to discuss it with me. I ask to speak to a supervisor and one comes on the line. I tell them I've answered most of the questions and can also give more info that they haven't asked for such as I transferred a certain sum of money which I can disclose from a certain bank account, I can tell them the number of the other account and also the bank. I can tell them the acc no of the acc that pays my nationwide mortgage. I can tell them that every month a specific amount is transferred from a different account into my nationwide account and I can name the sum and the account.

No, not good enough. I need to know my overdraft limit and the year of account. The supervisor says there is nothing she can do, I have now failed security and she can't change that. Apparently I can not offer info but I have to answer questions. I asked her what I'm supposed to do as I'm on the second day of a holiday with no cash. She says it's for my own benefit. The nearest branch is a two hour drive away.

Luckily I do have a barclays debit card with me, not that I told nationwide that. At the time I realised my nationwide card was fucked I didn't have my barclays card with me and barclays in branch were lovely. Let me take money out without a card as I managed to answer their sensible security questions. Just so glad I have two current accounts. Oddly the reason I opened my nationwide one was incase I lost my barclays debit card or had it stopped on holiday. I get paranoid incase I lose one on holiday and keep them separate. Have got my barclays one to hand now thankfully

Don't whatever you do move to Santander. They have blocked all statements on our account - we can't see them. This is a problem when it's a business account and you need to report to the inland revenue. They also block you moving money from your current account to your savings account. If there is anybody out there from Santander you are a total nightmare for small business!!!

But if you do overseas travel they do give you good free travel insurance. Also if you keep your existing Nationwide credit card you get a better deal on fees than the new one they try to sell you, as the branch staff told us. Now I must tell them we are going away.

Those 'stupid' questions are SECURITY questions. The clue is in the name!!If they arent satisfied with the answers you give or you cant answer the questions for your own SECURITY they cannot discuss your accounts with you!
What would happen if you wern't you and they openly discussed your financial affairs with total strangers?! I'm sure you would have something to say about that!
Also if you fail security you can call back and try again up to 3 times.

But Mandy I could answer just about any other question they could ask me. I could quote them exact figures and dates of money transfers along with account numbers from where money has been transferred. We have our mortgage with them and I could tell them any details about that they wish for. So I really think that would be sufficient security. Barclays seem to agree with me as they never asked when I opened my account or what my overdraft was. They were quite happy to give me money with no bank card once I could tell them my name, dob, mothers maiden name, email address and a recent purchase.

And I'd rather run the risk of having my details discussed with strangers than been stranded on holiday with no cash, food or way home.

ive had my card stopped before owing to me topping up our mobiles by debit card in one day. they only reason i found out the first time was when i was standing at the checkouts in tesco on a busy saturday, wearing the scruffiest clothes and looking as shit as i could (id just been down the stables). went to pay for shopping and she says in her loudest cattiest voice 'your cards been declined'. its a visa debit, has a habbit of deciding not to work, so i tell her ill go get the cash. then have to go back and explain my card is not working. she gives you that 'no you got more shopping than you got money for' kind of look.

so i made sure i stood there holding up her queue, appologising to the man behind who gave me an understanding nod, whilst i rang the bank who, after security and explaination of why 3 mobiles had been topped up in one day (which might i add was 3 or 4 days prior to finding out about it), took the bar off my card. i gave the card to the bitch behind the checkout and payment went through.

now if she had been nice i would have moved out the way and done it quietly without holding her up.

as for the bank. when i got home i rang them again and asked why the hell they had barred my card and not bothered ringing me to let me know. apparently they dont have to contact you, you should contact them when you realise something is amiss!!!! which could leave you in all sorts of predicaments!!!

Yes, nationwide made no attempt to contact me. A friend of mine was in Argos and bought something, five mins later went back in and bought something else. Before she got out the door her bank were on her mobile asking if shed just made two purchases in argos as they thought it was odd. Now that's good customer service.
