to let DD2 get pierced and get myself a tattoo at the same time?

AtYourCervix · 07/08/2011 20:12

DD2 wants the top of her ear done. I have wanted a tattoo for the longest time but always thought I was too old and fat and wussy to actually do it.

Anyway - DD is being pierced tomorrow. should I go for it and have a tattoo? is that being a shockingly bad role-model/influence? will I look ridiculous?

Absolutly agree with BillComptonstrousers and MrsPlesWearsAFez a decent tattooist will have a waiting list.
A tattoo is for life and needs thinking about, the design and why you're getting it.

ThePiperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 07/08/2011 20:34

chavtastic

michglas · 07/08/2011 20:36

You asked how you would know you love it - when you have been considering a particular inking for months on end and still love it.

FabbyChic · 07/08/2011 20:37

I agree it is chavtastic!

AuntieMonica · 07/08/2011 20:37

i had a top ear piercing and it never healed, i took it out as it was such a PITA

and i reckon a good tattooist will have a waiting list too, and won't have a slot for a walk-in

BillComptonstrousers · 07/08/2011 20:40

Oh and it takes bloody ages to choose one as well, when you are confronted with walls covered in designs and maybe 15+ books of stuff to look through it can make you a bit cross-eyed.

And then you really need to sleep on it.

LineRunner · 07/08/2011 20:41

And if anyone knows the whereabouts of Skippy, the beer-addled tattooist from TT Week in the 1980s, I know few blokes who want a serious word.

kittensliveupstairs · 07/08/2011 20:43

To answer the question regarding Kreecher, she is still alive and well and making someone elses life a misery. We left her behind when we left Switzerland a year ago.

FrenchRuby · 07/08/2011 20:43

The only place I think would do it is Claires everywhere else will be 16 (by law I think).
Please don't go to Claires, their equipment is unhygenic and the gun they use is too rough, especially for the cartalidge, it can shatter it.
The guns cannot be cleaned properly without an autoclave, which I know Claires don't have because I used to work in Claires, I worked in a piercing studio after and realised how wrong Claires are doing it. Anywhere using a gun you should avoid.

babycham42 · 07/08/2011 20:44

Where and what?

Meow75 · 07/08/2011 20:47

Any decent tattoo artist will have a waiting list. I recently had my 3rd one done, and had to wait for 4 weeks. DH is having his second at the end of this month, and has had his appt booked since the day of my appt.

I am nearly 36, btw, but haven't really had the parts inked that are likely to go really wrinkly so I shan't be worried.

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 07/08/2011 20:48

One thing to bear in mind re; the piercing is that they're a bugger to sleep on.

I've had mine years and have gotten used to its annoyance, but remember it being a huge pain in the ass when I first had it done.

LadyBeagleEyes · 07/08/2011 20:50

Where are you thinking of getting your tatoo, cervix?
I have a small dove on my shoulder, but I wouldn't want any more, though nothing against anyone else having them.
I really like tatoos.

Bunbaker · 07/08/2011 20:52

I would check that the school will allow your DD to have the piercing. DD's new high school has a very strict policy on piercings and anyone sporting anything other than traditional lobe piercings are asked to remove the earring/stud while at school.

theoldtrout01876 · 07/08/2011 20:52

13 is not too young. My DD1 had her first cartilage piercing at 11,It healed no problem, has never given her a problem and looks good. She wears a tiny diamond stud in the very top hole on each ear,a silver hoop on the second hole down on 1 ear and has the industrial piercing on the other that she wears a long pink bar through.I think she looks really good and beautiful.Shes just turned 15 at this point btw.She says shell never get a tattoo though :o

FrenchRuby · 07/08/2011 20:52

I'm getting my sleeve finished next monday, I booked my appointment in June!

AtYourCervix · 07/08/2011 20:58

so tattoo is probably a no-no (considering the wine i have consumed and the fact that i haven't booked it weeks in advance).

What's so different between a lob and a top bit? (i know about the cartilidge, healing time, no guns things)? Really though? a top is much like a bottom.

will ring and check about the age thing in the morning. she might have to wait a couple of years (unless she does it herself with a darning needle which is what I did after being forbidden by sensible parent and mostly why i'd rather know she was having it done properly)

Well in terms of structure of the ear, its just a bit harder . But I think it looks awful, my D wants it done (she's 15) and I'm saying NO

dexter73 · 07/08/2011 21:01

I rang a few piercing/tattoo places when dd wanted her top bit pierced. The one I went to said that you had to be 14 to be pierced there, as did another place. The other place had no age limit on the piercing but parent had to be present. I don't think there is a law on the age to have the top bit of your ear pierced but some places set their own age limit.

Letz · 07/08/2011 21:02

I had my ear(s) pierced in several places(not all at the same time) in the cartiliage when I was a teen (more like 17/18 rather than 13 tho! They always felt sensitive and would sometimes swell up, really quite irritating. The last one I got done in the upper ear swelled up, it was huge and I couldn't remove the stud as the cartilage had grown around it..had to go back to the piercer and have him pull it out with tongs - VERY painful, I never put anything in my upper ears after that.
As for tattoos..if you think youre too fat/wussy/old..sorry but you're probably right, yes they look cute and sexy on young girls (?) but on old ladies they look hideous and I speak as a 29 year old who's now had 2 tattoos removed by laser at HUGE cost to me, thought they were awesome when I was 18..but your choice and all that ;p

babycham42 · 07/08/2011 21:10

Presumably as I am over 29 my tattoo looks hideous on my crepy skin but I still love it as much as when I had it done at 18! Must agree that top peircing of ear is very uncomfortable to sleep on for a long time.

Had top of my ear and nose done with a gun. Mind you that was 24 years ago. I thought I had heard something at some point about possibilities of facial nerve damage. Has anyone else heard that or am I making it up ?

acsec · 07/08/2011 23:46

When I had my cartlidge piercing it took 15 minutes for the piercer(?) to get the needle through the cartlidge and my ear was full of blood - I was 20 and it was an ordeal!
