Dh is turning 30 and I want to get him something I can get engraved and that he can keep forever. I was thinking of an Armani watch, ther eis a nice one for £250. My brother has said Armani is overpriced and not great quality but there is no way I could afford a Tag Heur or Rolex!!!! AIBU to buy this watch for DH?

Just fallen in love with a Tag Heuer.. cost around 2k but they are about £600 cheaper on ebay and come with serial numbers and certificates, do you think they would be fake? (Runs off to check bank balance)

I have two "vintage" omegas; one was bought for about £40 and I then I got it refurbished in an old-fashioned watch shop for £100 and a new strap for about £20... I love that it is unique and old and I've had a part in bringing it back to life. Could be an option?

PedigreeChump · 07/08/2011 19:39

Oh and if buying a vintage one, maybe you could find one from the year he was born?

LoveInAColdClimate · 07/08/2011 19:56

That's such a lovely idea, Pedigree!

The Omega I bought on bay was genuine, but it was a bit of a punt buying it. I figured it was worth the risk. The man in the watchmaker confirmed its authenticity though!!! And it is worth about 3 times what I paid for it - although I had to spend a little bit to get it serviced and tinkered with. It now works perfectly, but it was a bit of a risk to buy something that wasn't working I guess.

That's a really lovely idea! Still drooling over the Tag Heuer though Blush

I really wouldn't buy a fashion brand watch at £300, unless that's what DH specifically wants. You'd be buying a cheap watch with a brand name stuck on it.

I'd look at non-fashion brand watches within your budget and see what you can find.

Someone linked to Watchfinder. I'd recommend them from personal (well, OH's) experience. The last watch he bought was an Omega Planet Ocean, like Clarkson wears on Top Gear, and he got a very good discount through them even though it was brand new.

DH is a total watch tart so I'll ask him but I think you could get a lovely tissot for that money. I got him a titanium beauty for £330 a few years ago.

LoveInAColdClimate · 08/08/2011 17:08

Did you buy the Tag, Joggle? Pics?

PedigreeChump · 08/08/2011 17:12

Glad you liked my idea Smile And I am the same as emsyj - both of my refurbished omegas are insured now for much more than we paid for them! win!

Hope you find something lovely and OH has a great birthday!

Second vote here for Christopher Ward watches, my DH has 3 watches from there and they are excellent swiss watches. www.christopherward.co.uk/

www.christopherward.co.uk/ proper link would
help!

I got DH an Armani watch from the duty free at Edinburgh airport! I didn't tell him that was where I got it! Cost about £200... How long have you got and do you know anyone that can pick one up for you?

nickschick · 08/08/2011 17:36

If you google 'replica watches' you'll find umpteen site selling fake Tags, Omegas, etc.

If you buy on eBay check the seller's feedback carefully before committing to buy and take the watch to a reputable jeweller to be valued within the time allowed by eBay/Paypal to dispute the sale.

If you should need to return a watch to the seller, use fully insured special delivery and keep the receipt in a safe place as you'll need to submit the tracking number as evidence of return.
