feeling uneasy about Jason Owen re Baby P being released?

Mitmoo · 06/08/2011 12:24

I know he didn't hurt the baby but he didn't stop those animals hurting him anyway. I know he can't be kept inside indefinately and at some point will be released but I still feel uncomfortable about this.

One of the trio jailed over tragic north London child Baby P's death could walk free from prison this week.
Jason Owen, 39, is serving a six-year sentence for causing or allowing the death of 17-month-old Peter Connelly exactly four years ago.

He is expected to be eligible for release at the end of this week, halfway through his jail term, taking into account the 289 days he spent in custody on remand before he was sentenced.

He will have strict bail conditions, as does any prisoner of his Cat being released, does. He wil not be allowed to live with his DC's, he never had the intention of living with them, that is why he was in Connelly's house.

Mitmoo · 06/08/2011 13:51

The problem with having huge sentences as nice as that would be is that I would worry it would up the anti. What I mean is if a person was looking at child porn which is sick, let's say they get 18 months, if they knew they were going to jail for 30 years the same as they would for harming a child would they go to the next level.

The sad reality is we can't keep them all banged up as much as we'd like to. I really don't know what the answer is. Sad

I rather hope for some vigilante style justice. There are some crimes that are just beyond the realms of humanity. When the justice system doesn't accurately respond to those crimes then mob rule will probably take over. In this instance I'd be happy to see it applied.

Any woman who engages with him on any voluntary level needs serious monitoring, sadly some needy fools will be only to happy to attempt to excuse his behaviour.

LineRunner · 06/08/2011 13:56

I would like people like Owen to have to sit in a room with a therapist for four years having to talk about how what they did was wrong, beyond the pale, and what they are going to do to change. I don't mean an hour a week, or two hours of group therapy; I mean a constant battering ram of talking about guilt and responsibility and pain and consequences and change. I want people like Owen to be so crippled by their guilt that will never be capable of behaving in such a cruel way again.

noir · 06/08/2011 13:59

"There's nothing to stop him taking his kids to school, living with them etc"

Don't worry, thats not true. He will have conditions upon release and IF he is allowed contact with any children it will not be without supervision. I would imagine that initially any contact would be supervised by professionals and will only move to more regular contact supervised in the community by family members or whoever after a detailed assessment of the family member's capacity to protect the child. The state has a duty to investigate his contact with any individual children under section.47 of the Children Act 1989. The rights of the child under this act trump any rights he has as an offender.

Also he'll probably be monitored by a body called MAPPA, who in my experience (although it varies from area to area) are generally amazing and do incredible safeguarding work: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-Agency_Public_Protection_Arrangements

Al0uiseG · 06/08/2011 14:01

It's going to cost the country a small fortune in all the monitoring and supervision he will need. At least the death penalty is a one off cost.

bananasplitz · 06/08/2011 14:01

he also tortured his grandmother, who died before she could give evidence in court against him

so obviously not just kids he likes to hurt

noir · 06/08/2011 14:02

Oh and just to clarify, whilst I have faith that he will be supervised I personally would prefer it if he never had contact with children again.

bananasplitz · 06/08/2011 14:02

There are some crimes that are just beyond the realms of humanity

agree

there are also some people who are just beyond the realms of humanity

Birdsgottafly · 06/08/2011 14:02

Mitmoo- abusers do not have that level of awareness. Child abuse is in its own catagory. rapists may kill, if we up the sentances for rape, but not people who commit crimes against DC's.

AgentZigzag · 06/08/2011 14:03

Saying people might as well be hanged for a sheep as a lamb Mitmoo I don't think rings true, I know you're not talking about hanging, but if even the death penalty didn't put people off committing the most disgusting crimes, then 30 years in prison wouldn't make them commit a more serious crime.

Which says it's about the person rather than the sentence they could get if they're caught, and of course they never think they will be caught.

I can understand why Squeaky feels these two men and the woman should feel the full force of public anger at what they've done, even though I disagree with losing objectivity in punishment.

But if these people had more than just a token sentence, people wouldn't feel they want to give them their just desserts to achieve justice.

GypsyMoth · 06/08/2011 14:05

Noir....when I was in court with my ex, it turned out he had become subject to mappa conditions. The judge had no idea what mappa was, but it does seem effective.

Happily, the man who murdered the little boy in our beat area was hinself murdered in prison this year!

Mitmoo · 06/08/2011 14:06

Birds not something I am an expert on thankfully never want to be but glad others can work with the victims and offenders.

I just wondered how far they would go if he consequences were the same.

I'm amazed that he actually has children of his own. Who would have anything to do with a piece of shit like that? I don't believe that he is intelligent enough for a Jekyll & Hyde personality, he's just a violent, bullying, psychopathic sadist.

There should be some kind of ruling that he cannot have plastic surgery or radically change his appearance.

crazynanna · 06/08/2011 14:07

I know this is an American piece, but it relates to the idea that execution is cheaper than imprisonment.

crazynanna · 06/08/2011 14:09

sorry...really crap at links Blush

Birdsgottafly · 06/08/2011 14:11

Crazy- it is pointless to discuss the death penalty, as i said we would have to come out of the EU.

We should discuss policies in CP , sentancing (not just in CP) and more services for those that come through the 'system', as T Connelly did, perhaps.

AgentZigzag · 06/08/2011 14:12

This article?

Mitmoo · 06/08/2011 14:12

Dont worry Crazy it will probably come up with a C&P

OP posts:
crazynanna · 06/08/2011 14:12

I am against it,Birds.

Someone said it would be cheaper to hand 'em high, and I have been reading recently that is not the case.

No death penalty...but realistic sentencing

Birdsgottafly · 06/08/2011 14:13

Child abusers usually think that they can beat the system and get away with it, that is if they even register that what they are doing is wrong. It wouldn't change outcomes, if we increased the sentances. I think that we should still, of course.

Birdsgottafly · 06/08/2011 14:15

The recent case where one twin was tortured to death and the other one, well cared for, shows that child abuse, doesn't make sense, it isn't as simple as thought.

Siblings can be well cared for.

crazynanna · 06/08/2011 14:15

Yes thank you AgentZigzag, that's the one

I think I've found it, let's see if this one works. Thank Crazy, very interesting.
