to not be keen on "No is a complete sentence"?

I can understand the sentiment, but I think if it was said to me I would be a bit shocked at the bluntness of it.

I suppose on here the advice is to use it when someone is taking the piss consistently and is a short sharp end of conversation response?

Does anyone else feel that they would be surprised too hear it in RL without some form of qualification to the "no"?

Agree with Manatee. If someone, friend, foe or stranger, makes an unsolicited and / or unwanted approach, a simple "No" will suffice. For everyone else, it does seem thrillingly blunt not to qualify it in some way.

YAB a bit U for me it is a phrase you use when you have said no and explained yourself. When the person repeatedly asks you the same thing and you have exhausted every every possible polite response and used every possible way to explain yourself to allow the person to understand and they still pester you.

Here's an example:

colleague: would you like to come to
Me: Sounds lovely but I'm afraid I can't make it
colleague: Oh spoilsport you could if you wanted why not.
Me: Personal reasons, I really can't
colleague: Oh x doesn't want to send time with us, won't explain to us does she even want to work with us.
Me: look to be honest I can't really afford it, it sounds lovely but I don't have any spare cash to go.
Colleague: yes right excuses excuses.
Me: (no thinking after this I really don't want to spend time with you) Look with being part time I am struggling, I will lose my flat soon so can't justify sending on a night out, can we stop now its embarrassing.
Colleague: Are you coming or not.
Me: No
Colleague: Oh you're abrupt.
Me:No is a complete sentence

Do you see what I mean, I don't think I'm the one being rude.

That's it Mrsx, I can see how it could GetTheFeckingMessageAcross as a last resort.

But in normal circumstances I just doubt it would be used without some sort of qualification, or some sort of attempt at lengthening the respose to make it fit into normal conversational expectaions.

I think LolaR explained it well.
