AIBU?

To think that if you're so poorly you have to keep yourself dosed up on daynurse...

Probably not but some people do not get paid or have had too much time off previously.

Report
DoMeDon · 04/08/2011 16:27

Depends - some people just over dramatise a cold.

Isn't that what Daynurse is for? If the medication makes you feel well enough to go to work, why shouldn't you be there?

Report
headfairy · 04/08/2011 16:35

Assume the person will get paid and there isn't any work that can't wait until next week. But they're coughing and spluttering all over the place.

They are waiting to be told to go home so the decision isn't theirs and they can be a martyr to the cause Grin

They should stay at home - I hate it... Even worse when they come in and say that they have been up all night with the runs an upset stomach...

Where is this elusive place where people get paid to go home for a cold?

Sounds great.

Thread about a thread? Or is it where you work?

It's where I work, we do get sick pay so if they go hone they won't lose anything. Isn't sick pay the norm in full time employment in the UK?

this is one of my absolute pet hates, I have to say. I can't stand it when people bring heavy cold symptoms (and germs, natrually) into an environment which is optimised for them to be spread. There are some people who don't get paid when they don't work and I make an exception for them. But by and large in most workplaces this is people with a martyr complex. Off home with you and stop feeling sorry for yourselves,

From next year support staff in state schools won't be paid for the first two days of any sickness. So expect your children to come down with more colds etc, meaning more time off for working parents.

Hocus, depends which LA is employing them?

Not a great idea, I agree.

When I was working in Nursery I spent October to April with one cold after another, if it wasn't for Beechams liquid I wouldn't have survived.

hocuspontas · 04/08/2011 17:10

Is it LA dependent then? I didn't know that. I'm in Herts.

Yanbu. I'd rather have to cover their work for a couple of days than deal with their germs.

The average person is capable of making a judgement whether or not they should be bed or at their place of work.

But there's some who are off for a cut finger nail or are utter martyrs.

I am thinking of my ex-boss who never takes time off. But also does fff all work at her desk except buying goodies from websites. A few months ago she came in with a horrible cold virus. The type you have exploding head, shivers, upset tum and bum. And sneezed it around our team. The following week out of 9 of us there were only 4 in the office for 3 days. The others were dying and us survivors wouldn't let them back until they had stopped shivering. Not good for business. We lost 15 working days in total. I'd rather she had 2 days in bed.

Company i use to work for offered an attendance bonus.... every 4 months if you didnt have a day off.

Q people with colds/flu/V&D food poisnoing etc all dragging them selves in as they 'couldnt afford to lose the bonus' (around 300 quid) all in a windowless air condioned officed - nice.

EVERYTHING spread like wildfire - the company started giving out alcohol hand sanitiser i was only part time and use to share desks... so would come in at least 1/2 hr early just to disinfect keyboard/phone/desk area.

Yes the 'sick' days went down - as far as i know they are still doing it.

Ok I'll 'fess up. It's me who's ill, I wanted to gauge the response. If I don't keep on top of my paracetamol I have a temperature, sinuses are killing me and I can't swallow my own saliva. I'm struggling with the guilt of being off today and thinking about tomorrow. The last time I was off sick was 2 and a half years ago when I had a miscarriage.

Stay off, keep yourself dosed up and watch crap on the TV.

Hope you feel better soon.

Can't swallow your own saliva? Do you mean you are actually drooling or just too sore to want to? If its the former not only should you be calling in sick but seeing a Dr ASAP.

If you feel to ill to go in stay off. If you feel well enough go in. Thats my simple rule of thumb. Ive been to work many a time with a heavy cold yet last time I had tonsilitis I was so unwell I couldnt physically move.

Depends how strict the work sickness policy is!! I have to go in as I am on a no sickness for 12 month rule

Headfairy - I had that for the last week of term, I was in agony and went through 2 packets of sinutabs as I felt that I couldn't justify taking time off sick that week when I was just about to have 6 weeks off (I'm a teacher). But because I tried to struggle through it, I ended up with a very nasty sinus infection that ruined the first week and a half of my holiday (I've only been feeling better for the last 2 days). I would say take time off now and rest/ get rid of it before it gets much worse.
