Daybreak today showed a doll that's causing quite a storm in the US.

The child places a bra type thing on and then pretends to breastfeed the doll which begins to suckle. I have older children so I wouldnt be buying dolls of any type. But I am fighting with myself if the doll is morally right or wrong.

Mumsnet jury. What's your verdict.

Sorry can't link, I'm on my phone.

"Why do they need to know about this sort of thing"

Someone said that on Daybreak? Hahahaha! Because, obviously, small children never see their siblings or other small children being breastfed!

I feel that this is just a gimmick. I don't think it will have as much effect on encouraging breast feeding as the marketing suggests, as everyone says, a child can pretend to breast feed any toy. I think that the best way to encourage breast feeding in future parents is by their own observation of it from very young.

If a child of mine wanted one, I suspect it would be a temporary hit, and would eventually be sidelined in favour of a non-function doll, which had much more imaginary play potential. I am more bothered that so many dolls are still not anatomically correct, with genitals, than about a little girl wearing a tabard that makes a doll make sucking motions at her chest.

My dad observed his mums friends breast feeding their babies, he supported my mum when she breast fed me, and they both supported me when I breast fed their grandson, no doll would have played any part in that sort of family culture, just real people and their shared experience.
