What age limit is there on the trolley seat

OP posts:
allhailtheaubergine · 01/08/2011 19:00

I'm always delighted of either of mine want to get in the trolley. They are 3 and 5. Much easier to have them contained and not 'helping'. But sadly they generally insist on walking and 'helping' and disappearing and arguing and .

belgo · 01/08/2011 19:01

the weight limit is 15 kg which means my dd2 aged nearly six can still sit in one but she is too long.

psiloveyou · 01/08/2011 19:07

I put two of mine age 6 and 4 in a double one. I have 5 dc and if I didn't keep them all completely under control I would soon be reading about myself on here.
AIBU to think that families that all do the shopping together are a pain in the arse/take up too much space/ just generally get on my nerves

The answer is you teach them to behave!!

squeakytoy · 01/08/2011 19:15

There was a woman at my local supermarket the other day, with a child who was riding her scooter, and probably aged about 8/9yrs... mother clutching a blanket which she carefully laid into the bottom of the trolley and the child jumped in, sat on it, and stretched out.... god knows where the shopping was going... mother was struggling to carry the scooter and push the trolley, never mind grab her groceries..

scuzy · 01/08/2011 19:46

do you have kids spiderpig?

lilmissminx · 01/08/2011 19:53

I just wish I could put OH in the trolley.... would be far less things I didn't recognise when we got to the check out!
As fas as DCs in trolley, it's definitely size dependent. Which means not long for me, DS2 is top end of height in his red book for his age. Sad thank heaven for online grocery shopping

ouryve · 01/08/2011 19:56

We gave up putting DS2 in the trolley last year, when he was not quite 4. We simply couldn't get him in and out of it, anymore - he was already way past 15kg, so we never let go of the trolley. In desperation, we'll use the trolleys with a big seat for older kids (he has ASD and can not walk nicely at a slow pace while we look for stuff) but we usually end up with him in his major buggy because those trolleys are a pig to steer and you can't get enough groceries for a family of 4 for a week in one.

grubbalo · 01/08/2011 19:58

Spiderpig why the heck does it bother you if people put their kids in a trolley? Fwiw ds1 who is just 4 sometimes goes in there - he's skinny, he fits, sometimes he (or me) is just plain knackered. He behaves perfectly well out of it, but sometimes is just easier for us all!

Now children putting their manky shoes inside the trolley is what gets me...!!

scuzy · 01/08/2011 20:02

what i hate is getting the trolley after someone else and there is a banana skin, half a mushed up bread roll and empty bag of crisps!! i mean sure the kids can eat going around but clean out the trolley after ye, ye manky wagon!

scuzy · 01/08/2011 20:03

grubbalo because she is the perfect parent whose perfect kids walk around perfectly in perfect congo line fashion!

ragged · 01/08/2011 20:04

I'm with UsualSuspect :).

SheCutOffTheirTails · 01/08/2011 20:08

3 is the age when DD1 can no longer be persuaded into the trolley seat, so now she walks around.

TattyDevine · 01/08/2011 20:08

Lol. My DD was 12kg at 6 months.

Yeah yeah, no it was on breast milk alone, no I didn't overfeed her etc etc she was massive when she was born blah blah etc.

SummerRain · 01/08/2011 20:14

dd was 18 months when ds1 was born so since most supermarkets don't have double seated trollies she hasn't been in one much since then.

ds1 was still using them when I was pregnant with ds2 as I remember struggling to heave him into them with a bump but he definitely wouldn't have been after ds2 was born when he was 2.5.

ds2 is 2.5 and refuses most of the time but still uses them a bit, he's small for his age though. He hasn't used a buggy in almost a year though so can't imagine i'll be able to persuade him into the trolly seat for much longer

SummerRain · 01/08/2011 20:15

Tatty... ds1 was over 10kg at 6 months too... same reasons. He's a tall but scrawny 5 year old now and only weighs about 18kg

Coffeeisking · 01/08/2011 20:29

DD aged 4 has been going in the trolley a lot recently. i think its nerves about starting school as she's been asking about going in a pram too!

Cathycat · 01/08/2011 20:46

I often put ds aged 4 in a trolley. He is fairly well behaved so it's not for that, but when he holds on to the side of the trolley, he often gets knocked by other trolleys coming past, ran over, etc., as he is quite little and doesn't get noticed by other shoppers. So it's for his own safety. However, as someone else said, it's getting harder to get him in the trolley, without breaking my back and buckling his knees. I can also look at the prices and concentrate better with ds in the trolley!

PhylisStein · 01/08/2011 20:48

My DS got stuck in a trolley - I knew then he was too big for it!

smokinaces · 01/08/2011 20:56

I still let DS1 (5, 115cm tall!) in the trolley if he wants - if I have him it means I have DS2 as well and sometimes its easier than letting them both walk.

Strains the back a bit helping him in though Grin

Met same family- mum and three kids- in every aisle of Waitrose on Sat. Nightmare! The poor woman was screaming by aisle 2. By aisle 4 she announced that whatever was planned for the day was OFF! FOR EVERYONE!!
One child cried all the way round, kept trying to run off.
Mother COULD NOT THINK BECAUSE HE WAS BEING SO VILE.
All at the top of her voice, we were all stressed by the end.
Not really on topic, but he was too big for a seat :)

spiderpig8 · 02/08/2011 15:15

SCUZY-Yes I have 4 children.
