AIBU to think a 12 year old should be able to fry an egg/bacon quite easily without adult supervision?

I had someone tell me on another thread recently that her 3 yr old makes scrambled eggs and baked potato in the microwave Grin.

(My 5 and 3 yr old can make sandwiches but nothing cooked).

My DH is pretty useless at eggs - he claims it's because he doesn't really eat them himself. If boiling one for other people he asks lots of questions, "Which pan," "How many minutes," etc... every time!

He does make a nice omelette though.

I came downstairs the other morning and my nine yr old ds was tucking into a fried eggs and beans which he had made himself.

My six year old can make an omelette. He can also make risotto and a decent ratatouille.

So yes, a 12 year old should be able to cook a fried egg (quality of the finished product is neither here nor there; it's about knowing how to and being able to do it)

my boys cook the sunday fry up every week. waffles, beans, fried mushroom, fried tomatoes and single egg omelettes. They're 10 and 11.
The only thing I worry about is the 10yr old with boiling water/kettle as he's quite small and not very strong. He can't actually lift the kettle up in the air ifkwim.

YABVU Eggs are the work of satan....... She can make toast, toasties, pizza, chips and makes the cheese sauce for mac cheese.

I can't boil an egg. It freaks me out that you can't tell if they're done or not, and I hate the gooey albumen when they're not so I just steer well clear. Frying is easier, but still takes a certain knack to get it right. Which I don't have. So I guess what I'm saying is, there's a whole spectrum of egg cooking abilities, from the adept to the useless, not remotely age-related!

My 10 y old is anapalactic to eggs - so no BUT he can make baked potato sausages and veg - or something else equally simple and can fry bacon - with much squealing as it splashes LOL . He can also make mean shortbread.

manicbmc · 01/08/2011 13:01

My ex could burn baked beans. I blame his mother. Hmm

bellavita · 01/08/2011 13:03

Well DS2 can no problem whatsoever.... dS1 (14) on the other hand....

Whatmeworry · 01/08/2011 14:38

It's not the cooking, it's the cleaning up!

Ingles2 · 02/08/2011 20:46

oh god, yes Whatmeworry. The fry up may be great, but the kitchen isn't after. Smile

mum0ftw0 · 02/08/2011 20:52

depends on the child and their ability.

My 12 year old sister can easily cook a meal.

Not sure we would trust my 18 yr old brother with a frying an though.
He does have learning difficulties, not saying all people with difficulties shouldn't be trusted, but he is unbelievably forgetful, he'd probably set the house on fire boiling an egg and not realise there was a fire until a firefighter tapped him on the shoulder.

Yes to scrambled eggs and omelettes, no to bacon. I don't let them do it unsupervised since I myself got splashed by grease in my eye one day and nearly tipped the pan over into the gas reaching for cold water with my eyes shut afterwards. I am a little neurotic about bacon now.

They all like to bake.
