....partner very claustrophobic and finds public transport very difficult. Also we would quite like to see Vorticists exhibition at the Tate - can we get there without public transport (especially tube)?

This is a birthday present from his parents who have paid for train and exhibition tickets, which is lovely, and my friend is having our son for the day, but because of the transport thing, he is now (late and probably fretting unecessarily) he is not actually keen to go, although he does want to IYSWIM.

It's quite a hike from Euston through Mount Pleasant, Faringdon, and Blackfriars Bridge to Tate Modern and if you stop off at cafes and the like en route it'll be a lot more expensive than the bus.

When you alight at Euston go next door to King's Cross Station and get a 45 or 63 bus direct, or take a 17 bus, get off at St Paul's Cathedral, and walk across the Millenium Bridge.

It's going to be another hot day in London and the view from the Bridge will be stunning.

Thanks - is the bus journey long (like more than about ten minutes)? And if it is, can you get off for a break easily? Tube is the biggest problem (escalators and underground and tunnels VERY difficult) but could prob do a bus if you can get off at regular stops.

If it's this week the weather will be good and it's a great walk.

Map, flat shoes.

Otherwise flag down a cab.

CRS · 01/08/2011 00:53

Going with the map and flat shoes option, I think, everything else seems a bit too much! We may miss one of the exhibitions through the walking but this is meant to be a pleasurable experience and it's maybe not worth trying to do public transport at all - we already have to get the train to London and have booked the stopping one so getting off is an option. Thanks everyone for advice.

Long time since I've done this route hence using it's old name but is the Thameslink (I think now First Capital Connect??) from Kings X to Blackfriars an option?

Lotkinsgonecurly · 01/08/2011 08:00

Vicky - Inspired, I was about to post the same thing. Used to get it every day when lived in London and commuted.

Thameslink is overground train takes 5 mins max. Very easy to walk them from blackfriars to Tate.

Could do it in one direction?

MilkNoSugarPlease · 01/08/2011 08:15

Bus journey is 15m, 20 tops, so if your DH needs to get off and walk the rest, then you'll have cit off a chunk of it

London is fabulous, have fun!!

MilkNoSugarPlease · 01/08/2011 08:17

And as schools have broken up, the buses shouldn't be to bad early morning or in the afternoon

avoidingwork · 01/08/2011 08:17

Train to Liverpool Lime street.....

exoticfruits · 01/08/2011 08:19

I love walking in London-there is always lots to see and you can cover quite long distances without noticing it.

iskra · 01/08/2011 08:36

Yes train from Kings X to Blackfriars, if P is doing okay with the trains... Takes about 5 mins & you get off on the other side of the bridge to the Tate Modern, short walk along the river.

Out of interest, what is his preferred method of transport?

roisin · 01/08/2011 08:52

We'd walk it, if you're happy with walking. This site says 38 mins fast, 51 mins med and 1 hr 16 mins slow.

When we go to London with the children we generally walk a lot - it's much more fun than being underground and things are closer together than you think really.

great site for walking route planner in London

takeonboard · 01/08/2011 08:58

Black cab, Boris bikes, cycle rickshaw, walk.

I understand the tube aversion but maybe try the bus, if not rush hour it probably won't be too busy

mumblesale · 01/08/2011 09:02

What about the top deck of the open-topped sightseeing bus?

BecauseImWorthIt · 01/08/2011 09:04

Goodness, he must be a serious sufferer if even a bus proves difficult. How is he in a car - thinking about a taxi?

wellwisher · 01/08/2011 09:40

Blackfriars station is closed for renovations.

I don't really understand how your DH can handle a train but not a tube? What happens if the train goes into a tunnel? If you take the Circle line from Euston Square to Mansion House, you're probably underground less than half the time. Then you can walk to the Tate Modern, take boat to the other Tate... and it is a bit of a hike from there back to Euston. Nice day for walking though :)

pinkdelight · 01/08/2011 10:49

Hasn't Blackfriars reopened? But even if it is closed, isn't the next stop on the Thameslink London Bridge? That'd be fine for Tate. Even if you got off at City Thameslink (the stop before Blackfriars), you'd be close enough to walk easily.

pinkdelight · 01/08/2011 10:50

Should say, the train does go underground briefly at City Thameslink. But not nearly as scary as a tube. I can understand the difference. Lots of people can't hack the tubes but find overground trains fine. Nice even.

CRS · 01/08/2011 22:31

Hi - thanks all for advice - we walked from Euston which was actually quite nice (though HOT!) and had a really nice day out.

Partner so relaxed after lunch, in fact (there may have been a beer or two involved) that we got the bus back most of the way and it was all fine.

He didn't enjoy the travelling at all, but managed it, and rest of the day was really good. : )

Great Smile

CRS · 01/08/2011 22:39

Oh - in answer to question above - he is OK in car IF he is driving - not as passenger. I know, I don't get it either, but it is a real phobia!

Im in London tomorrow, although havent got hotel/traavel details yet. Hoping to stay at same hotel from last week in Kensington as i want to go to Harrods again for a proper longer look roudnt than last week. But then the week before we stayed near Tavistock Square and if we are in that hotel and want to go to Harrods we can get a bus or the tube (i want to go on the tube, been on before but was about 12 and cant remember much). Last time we walked for ages and covered miles lol. but it doesnt feel that long.

finallynaptime · 02/08/2011 06:56

Assuming you're getting to Euston by train then I assume trains are ok.

Walk to St Pancras (5 mins) then get Thameslink to City Thameslink (Blackfriars would be better but I think it's still closed), then walk.

Basically past St Pauls, down the steps, over the Millennium bridge and bingo you're there! Nice walk too.

(finallynaptime's husband posting)

HipHopOpotomus · 02/08/2011 07:14

Walk, taxi, cycle. Get the boat from Tate to Tate - they are big and have an outdoors space.

exoticfruits · 02/08/2011 07:43

They have been and are now home again-for those who have only read OP!
