Just for fun, not taking this seriously but we moved to Norfolk 3 weeks agon now in a small village just outside of Long Stratton. Have made some contacts through facebook (ie DS2 new footie team) and most people out and about seem to be more than welcoming. BUT we live in a small row of bungalows and both of our next door neighbours run into their respective houses and lock the doors when they see we've arrived home. DH has said hello to both and both have ignored him. I was sitting watching for DH to come home the other night and as he drove up (both neighbours had been chatting in the driveway) one of the neighbours literally ran back indoors and no exaggeration she was faster than Linford Christie.
Waiting till it snows and when we help them shovel snow they might see we are good people who were looking for a better life for the kids than the one we ledt in London!

lol @ linford cristie sprinting neighbours, that is HILARIOUS. Think yourself lucky, at least they arent whinging about fences and the like...

ProfYaffle · 01/08/2011 16:38

womanwholivedinashoe - you must be near me, we're south of Long Stratton and nearly in Suffolk too Smile Lots of friendly people here but we're not a village.

Andrewofgg · 01/08/2011 18:17

Have you checked? Perhaps they have two heads and that is why you look odd :)

Newbabynewmum · 01/08/2011 18:34

What's the Norfolk meet-ups Facebook group? I want to join!

TattyDevine · 01/08/2011 18:46

Arghrrrr

My SIL used to live in Newton Flotman so I know your area but didn't realise they were quite so backward.

My comiserations!

mrscturner · 01/08/2011 18:54

I feel your pain!

I live in a tiny village in Suffolk, but v close to Norfolk border (I know Long Stratton very well!).

Four and a half years I've lived here and for the most part it's been miserable. It's like Royston Vasey.

However, in two weeks I am MOVING BACK TO LONDON!!! Grin

I have always found that the closer to Norwich you get, the better things are. DS does a lot of activities in Newton Flotman, just the other side of long stratton and actually, the few lovely people I have met have been from there.

4madboys · 01/08/2011 19:02

well some neighbours are like that, i am in norwich and our old neighbours were the same, as well as telling me not to let my kids out to play as they couldnt guarantee their dog would stay in their garden and it may get out and bite them! i said if it did i would kick it and then inform the police so that it would be put down.

anyhow we have norwich meet ups with and without kids, you are welcome to come along, we have a little norwich group on fb, some of us are in the sticks etc.

i know long stratton, have you been to the butterfly park yet? its near there? and a lovely day out wiht the kids :)

womanwholivedinashoe · 01/08/2011 21:23

Thanks ladies, I have laughed a lot about some of the comments Grin and NO haven't heard of the butterfly park ???? to be fair we're still in the process of unpacking. Haven't seen the neighbours today but had a lovely chat with the lady around the corner and the postmaster at the local post office so all isn't bad :)

Hubby has already started playing for the Long Stratton vets team and DS2 goes to football training every Friday here to start making some friends before he goes to his new school and a few have said they will call for him this week to go out :) so its really a general moan about two biddies and no one else :) they will come round I have an extremely cute 9 month old that no one can resist, i'll just let him crawl onto their front garden ;)

Norwich meetups I did join that on facebook but I thought that the ladies had given it up???? Considered taking it on myself to mett up with everyone but then realised i'd never know where to plan the meet up lol!!! :)

twoistwiceasfun :) I LOVE it, and thank you for the welcome. Have so far been watching the neighbours for the bin routine and went to the LS funday and spoke to the recycling team to make sure we don't put in the wrong stuff (theres a lot of recycling that doesn't go in the recycling bins Confused ) but we're getting there and once the boys start at their new schools in september we'll get down to a proper routine (possibly) lol!

womanwholivesinashoe.... i will pm, i am on fb as sarah rebecca pearson and have a pic of my dd as profile pic. i 'think' our fb group is set to private and you have to be invited to join? will go and have a look!

4madboys · 01/08/2011 21:57

have messaged you :)

ShowOfHands · 01/08/2011 22:01

Londoners! Gah. Buying all our houses, pricing us out the market, putting on airs and graces etc etc. Grin

I used to live in Norwich, well near enough and am now sort of West Norfolk ish. I'm very accepting of furriners. Once I've given you a good hose down of course.

DH used to work in Long Stratton. It's bizarre. Everybody's driving to or from it at all hours of the day but there's nothing there and no discernible reason for it. I've decided they're trapped and looking for a road out but haven't found the direct route to the M11 yet.

LatteLady · 01/08/2011 22:10

My late brother lived in Norfolk for a while, his neighbours said. "Hello" on the day that he and his wife moved in to manage the pig unit at a local farm. Five years later, they were moving out, when the neighbours spoke to them again to say..."Bain't staying then?"

They were thought to be quite garrulous in their village... but then NFN as we used to write in Casualty!

SeniorWrangler · 01/08/2011 22:19

Norfolk is a ghastly county and the entire population:

a) seems to suffer from large-scale group think
b) seems to think Norfolk has it all and anyone who doesn't get it has something wrong with them
c) thinks the rest of the UK, nay the world, has got everything very wrong

I think they should tow it out into the sea and blow it up.

Newbabynewmum · 01/08/2011 22:41

Can someone pm me? Invite me to the fb group? Lol, I sound so desperate! I have a 10mo DD and need some more interesting mum friends who don't sit around talking "baby led weaning" all day!

Newbabynewmum · 01/08/2011 22:41

Also OP defi use the baby card! The amount of people I get stopping me & talking about my DD it must work!

NorfolkNChance · 02/08/2011 07:57

The baby card works very well round these parts! I found people a lot more open to chatting once DD was here but overall I do love where we live (BSE) as it isn't tiny village mentality and there is something to do now and then!

(I come from Sussex originally so was used to easy access to Brighton and the likes on public transport - which is non existent here unless you can catch a lift on a passing tractor)

MissyBrookes · 02/08/2011 10:10

Ooo you should move closer into Long Stratton! We are a friendly bunch here, and although i'm not bum chums with my neighbours yet (only lived here a couple of months) we all say hello and chat to each other in our quiet cul-de-sac.

The village is super friendly too, i moved from the city and i'm still trying to get used to people randomly saying hi to me and having a chat when i walk down to the supermarket!

You do get the odd strange un but no more than you get in the city. Its a shame your neighbours are so off, it gives the nicer of us in the village a bad name!!!

MissyBrookes · 02/08/2011 10:21

Ps can i have an FB invite too? I'm very pregnant, ready to drop and lonely out here and would love to meet some fellow mums (who dont go on and on and on about nothing except pregnancy and kids...)

4madboys · 02/08/2011 10:23

newbabynewmum and missy brookes, find me on fb sarah rebecca pearson, with pic of baby girl as profile pic, send me a friend request and then will add you :)
