I just think this is crazy! Do I need to stop being such a mum?

One of my friend's washing machine is broken so I'm helping her out by doing her washing. Rather than waiting around, she's just left me with two big bags of mostly baby clothes.

The thing is about 95% of the clothes are ruined! They're all gray and absolutely covered in bobbles. This is baby clothes so they can't possibly have had time to get in such a state. They've obviously just been put in with darks, jeans, on really hot washes etc.

I just don't understand it! I am literally aghast! Why would somebody do this? Isn't it just a terrible waste of money? These are all Next and Gap but even supermarket stuff can be kept in good condition, surely? A charity shop would throw these clothes out.

I put on a 'white' wash with a stain remover pouch and a colour catcher and the colour catches came out dark gray.

Aghast!!

I always do a full load and unless it needs more, I wash at 30.

Surely it's not good for the environment to ruin your clothes?

sigh
I will leave you all to your judging of "these sorts of women"

michelleseashell · 31/07/2011 22:49

Don't get how this is sexist Confused

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2011 22:50

Well it's not if she is a single mum I suppose :)

Alibabaandthe80nappies · 31/07/2011 22:50

I'm not judging, just surprised. And my surprise is aimed at men just as much as women.
DH does a lot of the laundry in this house, and he knows what to put in with what just as well as I do.

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2011 22:52

Well the thread is very much about HER clothes (by which I presume you mean the baby's) and her slovenly ways.
Oh and "her whites" - which no doubt includes the whites for the entire family

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2011 22:53

all a bit "women know your place, halfway between the sink and the washing machine (and flip the kettle on there's a pet)"

KurriKurri · 31/07/2011 22:53

No - it's bad for the environment if you feel you have to buy more clothes if yours have gone a bit grey Wink

Really Zukie? I find that surprising - my DH, my Dad and my DS can all operate a washing machine quite easily.

michelleseashell · 31/07/2011 22:57

My husband is welcome to do the washing as long as he follows my system.

I never wash up though. He does that. I don't give a shit about cups.

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2011 22:57

Just reminds me of my mum - when we moved into this house she made a comment about "Well she obviously never cleaned her cupboards"
A tradition we/I have been fairly happy to continue

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2011 22:58

do you see why I think it's sexist now michelle? Assumed gender roles etc

TrinIsASadSpottyFatRhino · 31/07/2011 22:58

colour catchers ? really? you know they are just another thing they have invented to take our money right?

never sort, never iron
40 degrees, hang immeadiately or tumble

no gray, no creases
sorted

seriously

unclench and stop being so nasty about your friend

whether she sees it or not, its out there, you arebeing mean to her

foreverondiet · 31/07/2011 22:58

Maybe she can't afford new clothes for her baby and she was given it already in that state 2nd or 3rd hand?

My SIL does similar - basically doesn't seem to believe in bibs. She's just very busy and sees kids weekday stuff as not really important.

TrinIsASadSpottyFatRhino · 31/07/2011 22:59

zukie, thats just a stupid thing to say

shake yourself

That's the sort of comment I was parodying, stealthPB.

The colour catcher people are welcome to my money! I love them! They're a genius invention. I might donate some money to their research laboratories so they can invent something else to make wash days brilliant.

I've never separated washing, I don't own any white clothes, DP doesn't own any white clothes, I am not doing a wash on their own for 4 white baby grows. As a result all of DS's white baby clothes have ended up pink (not sure why they're not grey as they've gone in with as many blacks as reds but I'm sure a laundry expert will be able to explain this to me), I have continued to use them for DS2, he hasn't minded.
One way or another everything gets cleaned before it is worn again, without worrying about how it gets done.

Stealth - I am with you on the 'clothes shouldn't be such wimps', if it says dry clean only I'll stick it through the machine, if it survives (and so far everything has) I can make room in my life for it. If anything ever doesn't recover from the experience then I don't want their type in this house anyway. Grin

mmm

TrinIsASadSpottyFatRhino · 31/07/2011 23:05

I feel for you zukie

you haven't met many men (or any decent ones) and you haven't bothered extending your abilities

StealthPolarBear · 31/07/2011 23:06

funny how this thread has turned from what seemed to be low level bitching with some sexism thrown in into a shared ironic parody of sexist attitude. Maybe I'm just not clever enough to get it.

michelleseashell · 31/07/2011 23:06

Thesecondcoming- have you tried buying some washing machine cleaner? You can get it for about £3. You just put an empty wash on and stick this stuff in the drawer

OP posts:
TrinIsASadSpottyFatRhino · 31/07/2011 23:06

you cant actually believe that men cannot operate a washing machine do you?
I mean really?

seriously?
