To ask if you flash

Driving home the other evening and three cars that were travelling in the opposite direction flashed their lights at me to warn me that there was a police speed monitoring van further up the road. I wasn't speeding btw. I don't alert people to speed traps because I think drivers know the speed limits and they either choose to obey them or not. Do you alert others drivers, and if so, why?

I appreciate being flashed and do flash back if I think I won't be seen by the police. If you flash then people slow down and this is really the point.

PaWithABra · 31/07/2011 20:17

I flash my tits at lorry drivers .... anyone else ?

LostMyIdentityAlongTheWay · 31/07/2011 20:25

not just me then, eh, Pa?

thursday · 31/07/2011 20:28

nope. i'm bright enough to have never been caught in a money making trap without the assistance of others. plus, i'm not getting in trouble myself trying to help other muppets on the road.

StrawHat · 31/07/2011 20:30

Oh. And here was me thinking this was a saucy thread about lifting your skirt up a bit to tease your dp when you're in the garden Grin

mummyosaurus · 31/07/2011 20:43

Yes I do flash, but I am a bit careful flashing posh or new cars in case it is a unmarked police car and I get prosecuted like the man in the article.

If it's an old car, like mine, I always flash.

Agree with the poster who struggles to drive past a broken down car. My dad would always stop too. I would always stop and asked if they are ok. A few weeks ago I broke down on a country lane on the way to pre school, DS and my nephew with me - both 4 year old boys, almost every single person who went by stopped, some were mums from school whom I knew, but many weren't. One person could not stop on her way but drove back to check on me! As I waited 2 hours for RAC man to go and fetch a part, a lady came up from round the corner to ask if we wanted a drink/use her loo. Restored my faith in human nature!

SandStorm · 31/07/2011 20:48

No. I don't. Because I'm sick and tired of people speeding through my village. If you speed and get caught then tough luck. You know the limits. They're clearly marked and if you don't care, then neither do I.

randomness · 31/07/2011 21:01

"I speed as I tend to follow the flow of traffic, which is the safest way to drive. Driving slowly when everybody else is doing just above the limit is an invitation for an accident."

But driving at the speed limit isn't driving slowly, it's just driving at the speed limit and not above it!

I stick to the speed limit and it narks me off no end when idiots tailgate and do stupid overtaking just so they can carry on speeding.
I almost always catch them up at the next lights anyway, and I don't have to worry about getting caught by money spinning devices, or being more likely to kill someone because I'm following the flow of nobbers in Audis and BMWs traffic too fast.

Psammead · 31/07/2011 21:08

The announce them on local radio here (Germany).

There's this thing called 'Blitzer Alert' where you can phone up the radio station and report new/temporary speed cameras or speed traps and you get on air.

khaliwali · 31/07/2011 21:16

In the Middle East flashing means I will not stop, had a few near misses when I first started driving here. If you flash at someone at a zebra crossing it means I am going too fast to stop. Also nearly got ran over a few times..

Muckyhighchair · 31/07/2011 21:28

Yes I flash people for lots of things,

I'd flash when a camera is set up just after a change of speed, theres a few places police like to sit, and the limits only just changed around the next corner.

I'll also flash some Radom prick that is driving way above the speed limit, or relessly. It's really nice the brake lights go on in the rear view.

I flash for horses on the road, ice, etc

Bunbaker · 31/07/2011 21:32

No. It wouldn't occur to me. I got caught speeding a few years ago and serve me right. I don't think it serves any useful purpose to warn anyone else.

Muckyhighchair · 31/07/2011 21:33

Forgot to add, if I've seen someone driving like a prick and there are police then I don't and hope they get caught

I live in the sticks with very little police force. Unmarked cars are a easy spot, and no 3 of there regs off by heart, helps that dp is very involved with the police so end up having lots of road side chats with them (in a good way, all to do with work)

yes i do

PenguinArmy · 31/07/2011 21:44

i assumed people meant A or M roads. I wouldn't flash or speed in residential areas

posterofagirl · 31/07/2011 21:53

I do, also for dead badgers/ escaped sheep/ packs of brownies walking in the road. It's manners around here.

Bunbaker · 01/08/2011 06:47

I would flash for obstructions or accidents I just wouldn't to warn for speed traps.

Whatmeworry · 01/08/2011 07:11

I thought this thread was about something else :o

Merrin · 01/08/2011 10:46

I flash if there are cows or ponies in the road.

Empusa · 01/08/2011 10:53

No, and I don't get why so many people do Confused

thisfantasticvoyage · 01/08/2011 10:59

Speeding is just as dangerous as drink driving so if you are going to flash speeders to warn them of police up ahead you may as well lend the same courtesy to people who you think are intoxicated.
