To think this midwife is irresponsible to say the least and wonder if i can report her to someone

Ill try to keep this short without missing bits out!

I am 9 weeks with my fifth child. I was approached a a surestart event by a midwife who represents a private company working within the nhs. It is some sort of scheme whereby women can transfer care to this group and then have the same midwife throughout the pregnancy who will then come and deliver the baby either at home or at one hospital who works with them.
I was interested to hear what it was about so gave them my phone number to call me.

The next day she called me and asked a few questions about my history etc which is rounded up as follows

dc1 - high blood pressure mulitple hospital admissions but NO pre eclampsia delivered at 40+6 labour started naturally.

dc2 - severe preclampsia labour induced at 35 +0 weeks

dc3 - sever preeclampsia labour induced at 36+0 weeks

dc4 - high blood pressure no preeclampsia labour started naturally at 39+3, but I was on medication for abot 9 months after her birth.Had to see a cardiologist as my heart went crazy during the birth - no probelms found, should add have family history of heart problems.

The 2nd and 4th babies I was actually on my way for c section when they shot out - dc2 I was actually in the room taking the little whatever they are tablets and dc4 the epidural man (? - dont know the name of this job sorry!) was explaining to me I might not have time for one as my baby was distressed, poor epidural man was distressed himself when my baby suddenly appeared next to him on the bed but thats a whole other story anyway.

dc5 btw unplanned, not planned due to the above.

She realised that she doesnt work with our local hospital so then tried to persuade me that i am an ideal candidate for home birth (I am clearly not) when I said that surely I would need consultant care she implied that i could and perhaps should refuse or that she would come with me to prevent them pushing me into something i didnt want .

Then the worst part she said that if I didnt want to actually give birth in the hospital I could call her and then we could claim it was too late to go to hospital to have the baby - and she would deliver it at my house?! So an unplanned home birth.

To me this seems highly irresponsible I have nothing against home birth in the right circumstances but to me these circumstances are not it and to suggest that i could just ignore all of the above and perhaps risk mine and my babys life is ridiculous.

I am worried that she has actually persuaded another high risk woman that this is a good idea?!

I have a scan in a couple of weeks and i was thinking of mentioning it at the hosptial i go to (they wont work with this firm anyway) but am i just being over sensitive and should i forget about it?

I am thinking I may speak to the hospital I am going to to see what they suggest the midwife who called did say that that hospital dotn cooperate with them and she actually used the words "dont like us" so its possible they have heard problems before.

YANBU, she sounds like a nutter. Definitely report her, what she's suggesting is pretty shocking. It sounds like an ideal case for a Panorama expose, you should rig yourself up with a hidden camera for a subsequent meeting, to capture the evidence of her craziness!

Have you got a story for Panorama?

NMC good place to start - I am pro home birth, I have planned 2 x HBs and one was a VBAC. But - with your history even I would be planning a hospital birth. As a fellow HCP I am appalled.

It sounds like independant midwives who have been contracted - they are usually very pro home birth but not trying to persuade you into it when it is clearly unsuitable.

I spend a fair amount of time on MN defending homebirths. I have had two myself.

But this sounds bonkers. I am highly alarmed at the private company angle too. How can this be a good thing?

I hope you have an uncomplicated rest of pg and birth with no 5.

this is crazy, definitely report this. she's serving her own agenda, not what's best for a mother or baby. quite frightening really!

lisad123 · 30/07/2011 23:42

report her, I was told "no chance" when i asked if i was allowed a home birth after PE with dd1, and saw my consultant every 2 weeks until she was born. scarcy

biddysmama · 30/07/2011 23:49

was she a case load midwife? that sounds like the car i get (without all the crazy) same midwife, home birth etc

biddysmama · 30/07/2011 23:50

care not car

Sewmuchtodo · 30/07/2011 23:51

You have to contact the local primary care trust. I am another who has has severe pe with my 2DC's and I am now under consultant led cre with DC3.

I was told not a hope of a water birth, never mind a home birth!

You have been wise enough to realise this woman is at best misguided and at worst a genuine danger to pregnant women and unborn children......what if someone else is not so wise? x

giraffesCantZumba · 31/07/2011 00:01

what an idiotic midwife!

MeconiumHappens · 31/07/2011 22:18

I think discussing with the local supervisor of midwives sounds like a reasonable suggestion. Sounds a bit scary to me, particularly a 'fake' home birth :S
