DD is 2, I went to pick her up from nursery a few days ago as her room were just finishing their dinner. They were all sitting around their little table sucking on (sugar-free) Fruit Shoots........

I KNOW I sound like a PFB food-nazi, but I just don't give those to DD, I have a nasty reaction to some sugar-substitutes and am avoiding them with DD incase she has the same, DD loves apple juice and drinks that (watered down) instead. I know this will sound PFB, but even if I wasn't concerned about this I still wouldn't give Fruit Shoots to DD as they are full of weird chemicals and there is no need for her to be having them at her age (goodness knows she will encounter enough of them when she gets older!)

I had put on her nursery notes that she was not to be given products that contain artificial sweeteners, because of the reaction I have to them. The nursery states that it serves home-made meals, and avoids additives etc, so why on earth were they serving Fruit Shoots? A staff member in DD's room said that they had them with every afternoon dinner.

YANBU.

me, my mum and ds all react to some artifical sweeteners and I put it onthe thing at nursery too (nursery only served milk and water.

When he started school he started to get bad tummies and I found out he was drinking sugar free orange squash.

As it happens he seems to have grown out of the intolerance now (unlike me) but we still have to limit the amount he has.

if you have specially stated something then your child should not be given it.

I find that they give them out at all quite bizarre, before you even mentioned your reactions and their 'additive free' policy.

They're expensive, and unneccessary. DS's nursery just give them water and milk which seems sensible?! I wouldn't be happy.

YANBU I'd be raising eyebrows on so many different levels re this. Really surprised nursery wld include fruit shoots at all let alone on a daily basis.

halcyondays · 29/07/2011 13:21

Mine have them sometimes, but I wouldn'thave expected a nursery to be giving them every day. Apart from anything else, it must work out very expensive for them. You would think they would give them water, milk or even diluted juice for cost reasons alone.

halcyondays · 29/07/2011 13:23

Also when mine have anything with sweeteners in, it makes them pee like racehorses, so the nursery would be creating extra work for themselves as they'd have to change nappies more often.

I didn't mindfruit shoots at all for the kids - until I tasted them accidentally when opening the lids... my god they are vile. The sweeteners and artificial doodahs don't bother me, but 80p for sweetened nail varnish remover does not impress me... would have thought it is cheaper or the nursery to give them fruit juice cartons anyhow, so very weird behaviour... how do they open the dratted things? I have to use my teeth to pull up the kids lids, would be gross if the nursery was doing it that way too...
