to not really understand the M25?

I just don't get all that Eastbound/Westbound stuff.
Then they talk about hold ups clockwise between junctions 3 and 4 and I don't have a clue whether I'm going clockwise or anticlockwise.

I can only think of north as the way I'm going and east as right and west as left. I KNOW it's not right, but it's so hard to turn the map round in my head mentally.

I need signs that say "This way bonkers".

It's not only me is it?

The M11 junction towards Stansted is one of the 'Ups'. Although joining it from the north is often the end of the queue for the Dartford Tunnel. Completely depressing.

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2011 22:32

AFAIK Heathrow is accessed via the M4 and it is within the M25

LineRunner · 27/07/2011 22:33

All roads lead to Rome, though.

Empusa · 27/07/2011 22:33

M4 runs from inside the M25 to Wales. And is a bitch.

I drove on the M4 the day after I passed my test, going from Slough to Hayes, got confused and got to Reading before realising I was facing the wrong way. Grin

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2011 22:34

Yes - but you already said the M4 was inside the M25 and so i thought that was suffient - and I didn't need to repeat what you had already said stealth PB

Empusa · 27/07/2011 22:34

Heathrow is also accessed via the M25, just to confuse people.

If you go Eastbound onto the M4 from the M25 you get to Heathrow (first exit), if you go Westbound then it's Langley, Slough, Maidenhead/Windsor, Reading etc.

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2011 22:36

ahh :) We're like a double act (and my old username was very similar to yours)
Well now I know that is correct I ca go to bed happy. I'll save the story for how I spent an hour looking for my car only to eventually work out I was in the wrong damn car park, for another day. I am a country girl, not used to these big roads. Biggest problem we have round here is navigating the horses.

VirgoGrr · 27/07/2011 22:36

LyinWitch That is funny & sweet at the same time. How long before you caught on? Smile

Linerunner I'm moving to Surrey quite soon, cant wait to test your theory about the Hindhead Tunnel.

ObviouslyOblivious · 27/07/2011 22:37

The m4 starts at the north circular at Chiswick

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2011 22:38

If you are going from 6 oclock - near Brighton - towards Endfield at 12 oclock - then you are going north - either clockwise or anti clockwise, if you are going via dartford then it is anti and if via heathrow at 9 oclcock then you are going clockwise

VirgoGrr · 27/07/2011 22:39

I cant say I've ever heard Northbound/Southbound used in relation to the M25. I thought it was just anti/clockwise? Surely NB/SB would just be confusing?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/07/2011 22:39

I love this thread... I'm giggling to myself like a loon. Grin

I'm ashamed to confess that when I saw a roadmap (a long time ago), I thought the M4 was the Thames because it was vaguely in the right place, but also because it was blue... Blush

I don't think that anymore, no siree!

(((TomTom... and the marvellous "Where am I?" button)))

Empusa · 27/07/2011 22:40

virgo It says it on the signs on the M25!

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2011 22:40

virgoGrr - how would you know which side of the carriage way was blocked if you didn't use north or south bound?

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2011 22:41

well clockwise/anticlockwise would still work in that situation

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2011 22:41

My mate used that button on tomtom - where am I ?

up your own arse it replied Wink

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/07/2011 22:41

Virgo... I didn't catch on at all. There was a police patrol at the services and I was sitting in the vehicle, wailing as if my heart would break... until it was gently suggested that my car was not stolen, it was waiting for me on the other side of the carriageway... Blush

I think they've seen it all before... so embarrassed. Grin

ObviouslyOblivious · 27/07/2011 22:42

Please stop calling Enfield Endfield!

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2011 22:42

I thought you where off to bed?

VirgoGrr · 27/07/2011 22:42

Thats just stupid then. Grin

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2011 22:42

But i used to come up the M3 then travel northbound to the M1

Before I started, I did used to think, if the traffic's bad I'll just come the other way - i.e. anticlockwise, from the M3 to the M1. I honestly thought it'd be something like 10 mins more Blush

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2011 22:42

why? It is the end in a lot of peoples minds....

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/07/2011 22:42

Ivykaty...Mine just tells me where I am, it doesn't make rude suggestions... ShockGrin

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2011 22:43

I am procrastinating :o

ivykaty44 · 27/07/2011 22:44

Oh the rude suggestions model is cheaper and much more fun Grin
