AIBU to think that "Psycho" and "The Shawshank Redemption" are not suitable veiwing for an 11 year old?

YANBU. I wouldn't have let my 11 yr old watch them and probably not until he's 15 at least.

Punkatheart · 26/07/2011 09:08

Psycho - good God no. You would never get them to take a shower again. The Shawshank has male rape and is a very very long film. A great film but no, I don't think it's suitable...

squeakytoy · 26/07/2011 09:08

I would have watched them at that age.

DaveGrohlsgirl · 26/07/2011 09:08

No YANBU at all.............Psycho - bloody scary, Shawshank - boring beyond belief

Kayano · 26/07/2011 09:09

I would let them watch shawshank I think
But then I watched dirty dancing at 5 or 6 lol

schomberg · 26/07/2011 09:11

YANBU. Who on earth would find them appropriate?

fedupofnamechanging · 26/07/2011 09:15

Definitely not suitable for an 11 year old. I wish I hadn't watched either of them tbh.

EuphemiaMcGonagall · 26/07/2011 09:16

Both are classified 15. The guidelines are on the BBFC website.

I would say they are unsuitable for an 11 year old.

welshbyrd · 26/07/2011 09:22

My 13 yo DD has not watched these films.

Am I right in remembering in the Shaw Shank redemption there is a male rape in it?
I would not allow an 11 yo to watch these films

LavenderBrown · 26/07/2011 09:40

Thanks for the replies. Pleased to see it's not just me! I haven't seen either of them as I thought I would find them too disturbing. I was horrified when my mum told me she allowed my brother to watch them. I wasn't allowed to watch Dirty Dancing and Moulin Rouge at 15!

TV is evil

Absolutely not suitable! Apart from the question of whether they are suitable or not, why would an 11 year old be interested in subject matter like that? Am I being a bit naive in hoping that my DSs are still interested in football, Harry Potter and cars at age 11?!

gramercy · 26/07/2011 09:50

I am quite liberal in what I allow the dcs to watch, however, as others have pointed out, The Shawshank Redemption, although a good story, has that male rape scene in it which is horrible. Psycho is an excellent film but I agree that once viewed one can never get behind a shower curtain in peace again.

BulletWithAName · 26/07/2011 09:52

Entirely depends on your 11 year old. I was very mature for my age so I watched films like that, but obviously some 11 year olds wouldn't be mature enough.

LavenderBrown · 26/07/2011 09:54

My mum was watching with my brother so I am hoping she skipped the really bad scenes.

OP posts:
TotemPole · 26/07/2011 10:02

If you skip the bad scenes then it would spoil the film. The ee ee ee scene is important.

I don't think they are suitable for an 11 year old.

MrsClown · 26/07/2011 10:11

I dont think YABU at all. Too many parents allow their children to watch anything these days (God I sound old!). When my children were younger I used to think to myself do I really want to put those images in their minds because once I have I cant take it out again.

Keep to your principles. Children should be allowed to be children.

rainbowtoenails · 26/07/2011 10:32

I dont know. Jaws is scarier and it's only a pg.

Why are ppl on this thread emphasising MALE rape? Is it ok for 11yos to watch female rape?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/07/2011 10:35

Rainbow: Hmm

LostInTransmogrification · 26/07/2011 10:48

YANBU. I used to baby sit for my cousin when I was a teenager. When he was 7 he threw a strop and complained to his mum that I hadn't let him watch a Lethal Weapon video. My auntie told me off for this until I pointed out that in the first five minutes a half naked, drugged up, prostitute falls to her death and that I didn't consider it suitable viewing! Some people just don't properly think about the content of films and their impact on the viewer (at any age!)

Malcontentinthemiddle · 26/07/2011 10:51

I haven't seen Psycho, so don't know. Am inclined to think it's ok for kids to watch 'important' films though, if you talk about them afterwards. I don't think Shawshank is that bad - the rape is implied rather than shown, I think, and it has some good messages at heart.

BulletWithAName · 26/07/2011 10:51

I watched The Terminator films when I was about 5. I turned out alright.

Punkatheart · 26/07/2011 11:21

Rape is rape of course. There was no emphasis intended. Just a statement. I also would have said said female rape, if that had been relevant.

thatgirlsevil · 26/07/2011 11:45

It totally depends on the child and whether they have a passing interest in movies or a genuine appreciation of film.

I would have been 'allowed' to watch both of them at that age. I actually watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre and A Clockwork Orange at around the same age, but that was because I was a thoughtful and responsible pre-teen and very passionate about film from a young age...horror and arthouse in particular.
