To think that PG films shouldn't have swear words in it

just watched Mrs Doubtfire with my two DDs aged 5 & 7. I assumed it would be ok as there is a 5 year old character in the film but it was peppered with words like Jesus, crap, bastard, piss me off, shit.

Maybe they were too young for the film but as above I thought a younger character in a family film would mean it was would be ok.

AIBU? Are they too young for a PG film?

OK, I was just looking at ones on the front page which didn't have the details.

But I do think imdb is better.

Compare:

imdb Dark Knight

bbfc Dark Knight

Unless I'm doing the bbfc one wrong of course...

There are quite a few web sites that will help. www.kids-in-mind.com/
Very detailed info.

Well mixed views here on this one. I have seen it before but, like MissPenteuth it was on TV and I reckon I didn't realize it was cleaned up so that was why I thought it was ok.

As for easing them to stuff well we did continue watching but at times when it seemed to get more heated I started chattering inanely about stuff to divert attention. It may seem crazy but the fact that kids do get exposed to swearing and bad language is more and more seen as the acceptable norm then I feel that it is my job to try and reduce that as much as I can.

YANBU - i also am amazed at films containing the word 'cunt'. In fact I have heard that in a 12 rated film Shock

LucySnoweShouldRelax · 23/07/2011 22:03

dbennet You need to click on the "show further details" link. Considering that it's the bbfc who classify the films, I think imdb might actually get its information from there, but I could be wrong.

Parents BBFC site

'Will there be bad language in a ?PG? film?

There may be mild bad language (such as ?shit? or ?son of a bitch?) in a ?PG? film, but the context and delivery are always important. For example, if the language is used aggressively or if there is too much bad language, a work may be passed at the next category.Parents Site'

Mrs. Doubtfire was rated 12 when it was originally in the cinema. It came out at the same time as Jurrassic park and there was a big hoo ha in the papers about it as Jurrassic park was only a PG !

Alot of older PG films tend to have swear words. My husband put short circuit on for my oldest and they used the words Piss off quite a few times ! I have told him in future to vet older PG films just incase.

It's also not just PG films that have suspect language in them. The first Harry potter film is a U, yet it has fat arse and bloody hell in it. My 7 year old is banned from watching it as she kept repeating those words but nothing else of teh film ! LOL

I agree.

I let DS (4) watch Drop Dead Fred the other week. I haven't seen it for years but toally forgot that megabitch is the most-used word in that film. Blush

Have just been watching The Seventh Seal, which I was interested to find was a PG. The language is interesting to say the least, particularly if you understand the Swedish. And it has a witch burning and a procession of flagellants. Wonder what the censors were thinking of there.

But probably doesn't matter as it is unlikely to find its way into many primary schools. Still, interesting...even I didn't know all those words and I always thought I had a reasonably large vocabulary.

DBennett · 24/07/2011 10:43

@LucySnoweShouldRelax

That's what I think I did with my Dark Knight example and the level of detail is so much better on imdb.

In addition, imdb is an american site so I can't imagine they use the bbfc for information.
The american system is more detailed and, IMO, skewed.

It helps if you look in the right place DBennet

And if people actually bother to learn what the ratings mean.

"I was quite shocked when I grew up and watched the DVD versions (Back to the Future, for example) and heard them swearing"

There's much much more that should shck/worry you about BTTF

DBennett · 24/07/2011 11:54

@EvenLessNarkyPuffin

I agree that you provided a better link than Angree previously did.
Thank you.

I think I still prefer imdb due to the level of detail though.
