A curfew for children under the age of 15yrs

A friend remembers that in the 1970's there was a curfew for children under the age 10 yrs old in Switzerland, No child was allowed out by themselves after 9pm at night.

Why can't we do this kind of thing in this country? If any kid is found outside by themselves after 10pm will be taken to their parents and the parents get a fine.

Would sort out youths hanging around all night Angry

I think it is a brilliant idea. There are some states in the US where this is already in place too.

LynetteScavo · 21/07/2011 20:57

What youths?
Hmm

JockTamsonsBairns · 21/07/2011 20:58

What a completely and utterly flawed idea.

suzikettles · 21/07/2011 21:01

Yeah. Those gangs of 9 year olds hanging around are such a menace... or did you mean something else? Confused

Ripeberry · 21/07/2011 21:01

It works abroad. WHY are kids hanging around late at night in the first place? Just to cause trouble, drink or harrass people. If the parents/carers of these kids had come back on their behaviour then they would think twice about letting them out.

You're going to get a bun fight

Shouldn't need a curfew but I wish there was one - anyone under 16 in by 9pm Grin

suzikettles · 21/07/2011 21:02

Oh, sorry just noticed your title said under 15.

No, tbh I don't think children under the age of 15 are causing enough problems to justify a blanket curfew.

Ripeberry · 21/07/2011 21:02

Are you telling me suzi that you would let your under 9yr old out late at night by themselves Hmm ?

Good grief.
My child. My responsibilty.

JockTamsonsBairns · 21/07/2011 21:03

OP - at what age do you think the curfew should be lifted then?

Tortington · 21/07/2011 21:06

when they have a job goddam it! goddam yoofs with their baggy jeans and rap music

suzikettles · 21/07/2011 21:06

I don't see any 9 years olds out by themselves around here at night and it's not exactly the most salubrious area.

You get the odd kid hanging about outside the off license but as they are almost uniformly given short shrift they soon move on.

Don't you remember being a teen and hanging about with your friends during the summer holidays? Personally I think people often just see more than 2 14 year olds hanging out at the bus stop (oh the glamour) and assume trouble rather than actual trouble is being committed by said teens.

animula · 21/07/2011 21:07

Why not a curfew for adults, too? Especially adult men, who are often the folks out and about fighting and doing crime?

Poor children - the scapegoats of adult ambivalence: loved and cherished as angels and demonised, feared, and loathed by turns.

JockTamsonsBairns · 21/07/2011 21:08

Totally agree with suzi. What is it with punishing teens who are just hanging out

suzikettles · 21/07/2011 21:08

God yeah. That would slash the crime rates. No men over the age of 16 out after 9pm at night.

Makes far more sense.

muddyangels123nomoreHPforme · 21/07/2011 21:09

Well, it wouldn't work for DS2 as he goes to cadets twice a week and only gets in around 10pm. He gets a lift to the main road and walks the 10 minutes home.

TrillianAstra · 21/07/2011 21:12

YABU because you have not asked an "am I being unreasonable?" question.

The legislation was put in place a decade ago, and trials have occurrewd. Not sure what happened, I remember a town near Glasgow did this too?

So, anyone over the age of 15 will need ID to go out after 10pm. Hmm

As JockTamsonsBairns said;
What a completely and utterly flawed idea.

OldLadyKnowsNothing · 21/07/2011 21:18

Here's the experience of one woman.

suzikettles · 21/07/2011 21:21

It's still daylight here. There will still be young teens in the local park and they'll probably head home in a bout half an hour. They don't have school tomorrow, they're not causing any trouble - what's the problem?

I remember the curfews oldlady linked to. IIRC these were about specific local problems. Still a bit of a hammer to crack a nut in my opinion, but I'm sure if I'd lived in the area I'd feel differently.

It doesn't justify a countrywide law.

LynetteScavo · 21/07/2011 21:23

And maybe, these youths are out in the cold and dark because it is preferable to being in their homes.

Anyway, the only youths I ever see hanging around are outside the church youth club. Maybe that should be closed down...or at least finish earlier to make sure everyone is tucked up in bed by 10pm at the latest. Hmm
