I was told to f* off by an employee at a local BMW garage today

I was told to "f off" and "bl**y get a grip" in a long tirade by a female employee of the local BMW garage today - with my 3 year old daughter in the car with me - just because I asked them to move one of their Minis from over the white line of my drive.

The female employee came out to move it, with a male employee, but when she saw it, in her opinion it was not over the white line. So as I was waiting to park she looked at the Mini, said to him it wasn't over the drive and they walked off. Blocking the road (about to reverse) I tooted my horn and when she still didn't see me I had to get out and shouted over my car "Hello, please move it!". I couldn't park and would have had to drive back down to the garage and ask again.

She launched into a huge tirade of abuse that just stunned me. And my 3 year old in the back. And if she hadn't seen my daughter, when I got back in my car and drove down to the garage to complain to the manager, I had my daughter in my arms and she was STILL yelling - f*ing and blinding - and waving her arms at me!

We live on a busy main road next to a tube station and it also happens to be next to a BMW showroom. They park their cars all up the road, they spot a space so quick you wonder how they know someone's moved. My neighbour and I had a white line painted to discourage people from parking over the drive - it is difficult and dangerous to get out of our drives when they are obscured by vehicles.

I spoke to the BMW manager and explained that it wasn't that far over the line but it made manouvering out of the drive really difficult. He apologised for his employee's behaviour but what stunned me was this was a lady in her 20s or early 30s, yelling at me in the street with a string of swear words having been asked as a member of BMW staff - therefore representing the company in the local community - to move a car.

The manager then asked me if I knew anything about vandalism, which I said I didn't but that I'd called them once when I looked out the window and saw someone who I thought was going to take one of their convertibles if they didn't move it quick and suggested they checked all the cars were locked. He said 2 or 3 cars are "keyed" a week. In fact our car alarm did go off not long ago and our badge was nicked off the car. It only occurred to me later this afternoon that he might have been thinking we'd vandalised the cars. I don't condone that behaviour but is someone keying a car worse or better than someone telling you to f* off over and over, with your small daughter having to listen to every word?

It really upset me all day, I was shaking. What would you do, apart from suggest I don't buy a BMW or Mini?

Oh god it does get tiresome when people say you should threaten to invoke the powers of mumsnet.

Gastonladybird · 20/07/2011 21:05

Agree with controlled you need to make them see your point - I assume it's not just accessing but visibility (used fo live in road where people in corner house collected vans... It's not just a matter if getting in and out but if you can't see it's dangerous)

Tiredmumno1 · 20/07/2011 21:07

Also they wont be insured being parked there

Ormirian · 20/07/2011 21:08

White line or not you should be able to get in and out of your drive.

PaperBank · 20/07/2011 21:09

Would this be disorderly behaviour/breach of the peace?

catinthehat2 · 20/07/2011 21:11

Eh? Power of MN?
Have you not noticed mfrs interest in this site?
ford has a microsite here.

Marketing cars on sites like this is not a sideline...

UKSky · 20/07/2011 21:11

I haven't read anything other than the OP but can tell you there is no point writing to BMW's head office. They are franchises and they just don't give a damn (I know this from experience albeit BMW motorcycles).

SpottyFrock · 20/07/2011 21:14

I also think you should write to your local paper. Car dealerships are franchises and I would print up leaflets telling people to avoid that one due to appalling behaviour of staff. If you live in a busy, urban area there's bound to be another one up the road.

I think that sort of behaviour at work should result in dismissal regardless of what the dispute was about. I'm appalled that she wasn't fired on the spot if her boss heard her swearing like that.

SpottyFrock · 20/07/2011 21:15

Yes, no point in writing to head office. Tell us where it is instead and tell your local community.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 20/07/2011 21:15

Nerf... "do you really think bmw drivers care about what MN think? All the bmw drivers I know without exception are selfish arses sadly."
I don't think it's because of the car they drive... I just think you unfortunately know alot of selfish people...

catinthehat2 · 20/07/2011 21:22

"would print up leaflets telling people to avoid that one due to appalling behaviour of staff. If you live in a busy, urban area there's bound to be another one up the road."

Yes, definitely the best approach for nutters. Try using green ink for the best impact. Maybe write it out in black paint on an old sheet and hang it out of your bedroom window, that would work as well.

Hmm
microserf · 20/07/2011 21:22

i think he was suggesting you might be responsible for the vandalism - which is pretty poor.

frankly, i would write to head office and give the details of the garage and if you have the name of the employee. regardless of the whys and wherefores of the white line, you shouldn't be spoken to like that especially when you are accompanied by a child which compounds the offence

the legitmacy of the white line is not relevant. what is relevant is someone representing their company behaved like a total arse.

SpottyFrock · 20/07/2011 21:32

Catinthehat, I was trying to suggest that if she wants to have an impact on their business, it needs to be local because bmw are franchises so no over-arching head office as such. Letting local people know is definitely her best recourse.

Ive had a home made leaflet through the door before about a local cafe and its BF policy. The same mother also told her story to the local paper and let the local nct group know. It wasn't long before the cafe issued a statement in the local rag saying it supported BF. Slightly different but the same in terms of local impact.

NerfHerder · 20/07/2011 21:39

gaston- I know 12 bmw drivers personally (not including those in my immediate family)- sorry but they are all selfish arses! Grin I'm extrapolating up from there... Wink

abf- yes, I think you're right.

DuelingFanjo · 20/07/2011 21:43

does it really matter who painted the white line? Telling someone to 'fuck off' while representing your business is stupid. OP, complain.

prudaloo · 20/07/2011 21:44

Ffs- it's not about BMW DRIVERS. What do you drive Nerf-never mind, whatever it is, EVERYONE who drives that make of car is a mindless bigot. OK.

controlleddemolition · 20/07/2011 21:44

Lol at anyone at BMW 'shaking like a leaf' because of the middle class users of mumsnet. Very very funny Grin

catinthehat2 · 20/07/2011 21:44

BMW does not manufacture in the UK
Dealer franchises will be structured via the UK distributor of German product
Typically the UK distributor is responsible for marketing, and selling German product to the dealer franchisees
Ifvthe franchisees fail to meet service standards, they don't get given product to sell ultimately, and are replaced by another franchisee in that area.

controlleddemolition · 20/07/2011 21:45

Going to bed shaking like a leaf. That's very funny Grin

controlleddemolition · 20/07/2011 21:47

Sorry didn't mean to post that twice - broadband dropped out first time

catinthehat2 · 20/07/2011 21:48

Again? Do you still nnot understand the basics of carvdistribution in the UK?
Dealer staff act like dickheads ,hence franchisee who is private businessman in competition with other marques and other out of area franchisees, will be down like ton of bricks on staff member. It's really not difficult.

controlleddemolition · 20/07/2011 21:54

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be rude catinthehat, I know some people invest a lot in the power of mumsnet, I didn't mean to mock you

NerfHerder · 20/07/2011 21:59

Who says I drive prudaloo? I said the bmw drivers I know. Obviously I'm a bigot because I decide 12 people I know are selfish Hmm

WHat I said about all bmw drivers was that they wouldn't care what MN thinks... because actually MN isn't the centre of the universe.

skybluepearl · 20/07/2011 22:56

police maybe? then write to head office and copy in manager? needs to be logged

catinthehat2 · 20/07/2011 23:02

Er ok thanks
