arghhhh! Just quietly biting my tongue is hard work. I thought it was only women who got like this but he has really turned into someone very materilisitic and big headed!

It is his future PILs money. It is very funny, but also a bit sad that he seems to think he is somehow better than the rest of us, I'm not sure how close we'll all be in the future as our values seem so different. He has always been keen to impress and follow the crowd.

Surely you must have noticed his Hyacinth Bucket tendencies before? Really liking the idea that the rest of you are going to be like Daisy, Onslow and Rose.

NotADudeExactly · 20/07/2011 15:32

Have you considered developing a really embarrassing accent ahead if the big day? Something vaguely East London perhaps ? :o

qwepoi · 20/07/2011 15:35

Yes, he has always had these tendencies. Is worse now though, he and his gf (who I actually really like) are v similar in that respect. It is quite likely to make me inadvertantly behave in an opposite Onslow like fashion.

Fwiw, if he's always been a bit like this I suspect there is nothing you can do. Long experience with my father who believes he is the one enlightened soul amidst an ocean of spiritual retardation (he actually used that phrase Confused). Do feel free to take the piss mercilessly. It will make you feel better about it and your db will feel confirmed in his perception that he is just so much more sophisticated than you plebs. Win-win!

BitOfFun · 20/07/2011 15:48

But if he can't keep her in the manner to which she is accustomed, surely she is moving 'down' the ladder to join him? I suggest being ostentatiously friendly to her in a 'salt of the earth' manner and welcoming her to your family. Perhaps lead a rousing chorus of Roll Out The Barrel or similar?

the one enlightened soul amidst an ocean of spiritual retardation

That's the sort of thing my nephew would have said before he had it beaten out of him.

limitedperiodonly · 20/07/2011 15:49

Can you wear cufflinks on a football shirt? I suggest your normal brother tries.

girlywhirly · 20/07/2011 15:50

I am imagining some of these statements of your DB finding their way into the Best Mans speech, to be heard by all and sundry, but particularly the FIL and his bosses, making him a laughing stock. Sorry for you qwepoi, I hope he comes to realise what a dick he's being. I think it's time his DF had Words.

qwepoi · 20/07/2011 17:25

Thank you all, I was fully expecting (and kind of hoping) to be told I was bu. DBs future PILs are not particularly wealthy or anything so not sure where all the showing off comes from!

haha, he sounds like he's being ridiculous. If that was my brother I'd be ripping the piss mercilessly.

Pandemoniaa · 20/07/2011 18:03

Hasn't anyone told him that the very statement "There will be Very Important People at the wedding" makes him look like an utter parvenu? Or at the very least, a complete cockjuggler.

Someone has to take the piss, mercilessly, out of your db. Have fun, OP!

NotADudeExactly · 20/07/2011 18:22

OP, please turn up to his wedding wearing a pink track suit two sizes too small and acquire the most outrageously unsophisticated accent you can manage. I would also seriously consider bringing your own supply of Stella. If you are feeling brave, calling FIL's important bosses "mate" will definitely make him cry.

Don't forget to obtain the video footageband upload it to YouTube. :o
