Come on - if you want to give someone a virtual hug, then just say it. Don't bother with the... "oh, its very un-mumsnetty to give you a hug, but here's one anyway.

Just hug and forget about the unwritten MN rules.

Really irritates me!

I do think it sometimes gives the impression that the person is kind of interested in offering a virtual hug, but at least equally interested in demonstrating / preserving their MN street-cred.

Which is fine when it's a lighthearted post, but which, when it's used to qualify a hug offered to someone who is clearly dealing with raw grief or vulnerability or pain, does grate on me a bit.

Last bit made no sense, sorry.

Why is it un MN?

caramelwaffle · 18/07/2011 00:21

Because MNetters don't do fake hugs or kisses.

If they give you a hug they mean it.

Genuine "best friend" yet "telling you like it is" affection...

MumblingRagDoll · 18/07/2011 00:24

It's bloody NetMums to say it at all. The phrase "Have an un-Mumsnetty hug" is now very NetMums.

MumblingRagDoll · 18/07/2011 00:25

How about offering a "Slap to both cheeks" in order to snap people back to their senses?

[slaps self]

HoneyNorwegianRidgebackdragon · 18/07/2011 07:41

We already do the manly back slap on the lught hearted posts of woe.
