I have 3 DC's (6 months, 3 and 5) and as it has been a horrible rainy weekend and we haven't had any plans we've been stuck indoors.

DS2 is still breastfed so when feeding him and trying to get him to nap I need quiet but DS1 and DD get on very well and their games can be punctuated by loud squeals screams and giggles which is fine outdoors but drives me to distraction indoors when I am trying to get DS2 to sleep.

That coupled with getting up at 6am every morning has makes me so irratable and I have shouted loads today as they weren't listening when I asked them to be quiet or get dressed and I now feel terrible and like the worst mother, aibu?

I could have written your post yesterday. I had a very shitty shouty day with my two (3 and 5) and felt sooo guilty about it once they were settled in bed. But, seriously, they bickered, made a mess, didn't listen, broke things...by the end of the day I was sick of it!

As we were getting ready for bed, dd dropped something and said 'Freakin 'ell'. Shit! Not only did I shout at her and her brother, they clearly heard me swear too. Ok, it's not the worst swear word, but when it's said by a 3 year old it sounds awful!

Two yr old standig at his gate in bedroom last week, he has a habit of adding a t next to an s in a word unnecessarily.
'funking stell' repeatedly. Blush

YABU. Despite all appearances I'll bet almost all of the mums you see will have shouted too sometimes. I share your pain - I REEEALY want to be like those delightful calm-at-all-times women who say in smooth tones "Jocasta, please don't use your charcoals on the walls, come and draw some olives on this parchment instead" etc etc.
But yesterday, as I fed one (6month old) twin and bounced the other on my foot, having been covered in sick and been up since 5am, I shouted VERY loudly at my 2 year old who was running round the dining table waving scissors. He cried, I felt ghastly, but I needed to stop him in his tracks.
It's very hard not to shout and STILL be effective! Stop beating yourself up and put your feet up and have a brew. X

I love my baby very much but he drives me absolutely insane. I tell him to shut up several times a day. Or very occasionally I tell him to fuck off. I really try to be patient and sometimes I sit there going 'Oh dear whatever can the matter be. Let's play with your blocks darling!' but after a couple of days of non stop noise I'm normally saying, 'Just shut your face. Give it a damn rest. When do you take a break? I'm going to 118 the orphanage in a minute!'

I took him out of his pram in town and told him to 'Stop being THAT baby. You're letting us both down!!' He is six months old.

I made a solemn pledge I was going to be the best mum ever and I'm a bullshit mum!

I still shout at mine and they are 5 and 6. Glad I'm not the only one!

They are so bloody loud and shriek and scream and don't take a telling. I end up bellowing 'for the love of god shut up!!!' quite a lot Sad

We are starting week 3 of the summer holidays, only 4 to go thankfully!

Melly20MummyToPoppy · 18/07/2011 09:06

week 3??? Where abouts are you? We're not even on week 1 yet!

bandgeek · 18/07/2011 09:13

Up in Fife Smile

I'm on countdown for the end of the holidays as my youngest starts primary 1 so I will have 6 hours of peace a day (yippee!)

Bet I will end up missing them both! Grin

Melly20MummyToPoppy · 18/07/2011 09:35

Ok geography was never my strong point, Fife is scotland right? Or thereabouts Confused

4 weeks left, so do they go back in august then?

robingood19 · 18/07/2011 10:23

the apprentice youngsters are chosen because they are nasty and selfish. Its the format. Entremanures. Dont tell Sugar baby

bandgeek · 18/07/2011 23:38

Yeah we are in Scotland. Schools start back 16 or 17th august (will have to double check!)

We have always had the holidays a lot earlier than the English schools for some reason!

leelo · 19/07/2011 00:02

i'm in scotland too. my DD is back on 16th of august. trying to occupy my kids and not go mad is really hard but there is one important thing i remember. kids have no real memories before the age of 3 so shouting at them won't be remembered and older ones need explanations of why you've shouted and will understand that adults are no better than kids at controlling their emotions we're just better at buying sweets to say sorry.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 19/07/2011 07:54

I'm always suspicious of people that say they never lose their temper. Expect they are on high-dose meds or something. Shouting is effective in small doses so use sparingly rather than risk the children zoning it out, and have a few early nights so that tiredness doesn't add to your problems. Good luck

McPie · 19/07/2011 09:14

I hate the holidays they are too long, the kids have been off since the 1st and dont go back until the 22nd august here in Midlothian and DH's holidays start the day they go back Angry
My 3 stear clear until I have had my 2 cups of coffee most days but they fight like cat and dog almost all day, they dont listen, they break things, cover their room in pen and the bathroom in toothpaste/shampoo (even though its supposed to be out of reach, damn that monkey of a youngest son).
DS1 is 10 and DD and DS2 are 4 and they are so much worse on a rainy day, which we get loads of in Scotland, as they are all in the house. DS1 is normally out playing on nice days but his brother wants to go with him which causes arguments, 'in a minuite' sends DD into a tizzy fit when she wants something even if you are sat on the loo!!!
