The "NEXT SALE" obsession

AngryChair · 16/07/2011 10:52

So taking DS to the train station at 6.45am this morning and I'm saying to him "they'll be loads of spaces in the shopping centre at this time in the morning" and usually there would be - it would be practically empty (although full to burst by 11am!). Anyway we got there and it was pretty packed. I couldn't understand it as no shops are open at that time anyway! It wasn't until I got IN the shopping centre that I noticed hordes of people loaded up with tons of "NEXT SALE" bags swarming around the Next shop like ants on a jam jar. It was ridiculous. You'd think someone had been stood there offering £20 notes out to anyone who entered the shop.

Some of these people must have been there since 6ish and had little kids with them who'd obviously been dragged out of bed for the privilege.

AIBU in thinking it's all a bit sad? I mean I do like Next but the lengths people go to!!

I don't get why you say if you wouldn't buy it at full price then why would you buy it at half price. I quite often see things that I would very much like to buy at full price but they are too expensive, so when they are half price I can afford them. Surely that is why people wait for the sales to buy things?

forehead · 16/07/2011 18:04

The next Sale is fine if you choose carefully. I have been to the next sale and got some nice denim items for my dc's. Most people just choose anything , because it's cheap.
I hate all the adults clothes and don't even bother looking at them now.
I usually buy my dc's things from Debenhams , Asda or Zara.

HorseyGirl1 · 16/07/2011 18:12

it's nice but not worth getting up at silly o'clock for. Really if you really liked it you would buy at full price. But if you buy it as a bargain chances are you will buy the slightly doesn't fit just right thing since it's cheap and never wear the damn thing anyway - but that's true of any shop. Agree with comment that they wheel out stuff specially made for the sales, think M+S do that too

Whorulestheroost · 16/07/2011 18:25

I think that yabu, I don't see why you have to judge people as " sad" just because they chose to do something that you wouldn't. Personally I would not dream of getting pushed and shoved in a que at 5am but hey if anybody else wants to the bully for them.

BupcakesandCunting · 16/07/2011 18:26

I didn't realise it was Next sale day today. I went in to the Birmingham branch today as a last resort, after trawling round trying to find trousers for DS.

I went in, got about six paces in, saw the scene of carnage before me, decided I would rather shit out a watermelon wearing a hedgehog to keep warm, turned on my heel and left.

renlo · 16/07/2011 19:05

3 years ago, when dd1 was a baby, I decided to 'do' the next sale as I had bought a few bits and bobs from there and found them good quality. I went into the store the day before to scope out what I might get for her and made some notes (yes, I'm a bit anal like that!) I woke at loon o'clock to que the following morning, got my bag, was shoved into the store to be confronted with hundreds upon hundreds of of rails of stuff I have never seen before and wouldn't touch were it being given away for free. There was nothing I had seen in the store the previous day on sale, not a thing. I was disgusted and walked out. I have never returned out of principle. I know the tactic, I used to work for Debenhams in my student days and we always used to be told to dig out the 100 seasons ago stuff each 'mega day' to put on the shop floor. I know most stores do this but Next took the biscuit. I now get most of my daughters clothes in the John Lewis clearance. Now that is a proper sale!

begonyabampot · 16/07/2011 19:43

popped in today and it wasn't too bad in the ladies section - and not old stock either. The boys sale section was almost non existent though. Did get some nice bedding half price.

pigletmania · 16/07/2011 21:19

I have never ever understood the fascination with Next sales, they are shite. why oh why should anyone in their right mind get up on a cold winters morning at stupid o clock to buy crap Hmm, because thats what goes in the Next sale from what I've seen.

Orbinator · 17/07/2011 00:19

Only decent stuff that is reduced to a decent price are sometimes the shoes. It's like dredging through a chaotic yet dull version of TK Maxx (without the designer labels) other than that.

spiderslegs · 17/07/2011 00:38

NEXT IS SHIT - THE SALE IS SHIT WRIT LARGE.

GetOrfMoiLand · 17/07/2011 00:46

I feel sorry for the poor sods who work for Next, having to get up at that ungodly hour for the 6am sales (and also boxing day) to fend off crazed women who have a deep desire to buy a crap nylon top for a fiver.

Loathe Next clothes. The workwear is awful stuff worn by recruitment consultants. It is anti-fashion.

FreudianSlipper · 17/07/2011 00:48

i think it is ridiculous, then trying to make out your obsession is their childs obsession too, mmm well i wonder where they got that from

apart from the odd item of childrens clothing that does not have NEXT splashed across the chest, or does not look nextish the clothes are horrible. i think i have bought about 5 items from next for ds, from vouchers that have been given to us

the womens clothes always have a middle age look to them. the uniform for those that can not afford the boden uniform but also want comfortable clothing. loved what nancy66 had to say :)

snippywoo2 · 17/07/2011 00:54

The clothes are crap but last year I got a VIP invite and got an up-scaling DVD player for £20 its brill. Went on it this year as a non VIP and its crap the VIPs definitely get the best deals.

CointreauVersial · 17/07/2011 01:33

I have scooped some absolute bargains in the Next Sale, but always online.

A couple of years ago, on Christmas Eve, I managed to kit out DD1's new bedroom - wardrobe, chest, shelves, bedding etc. for half price, really good quality stuff.

All my running kit (Nike) came from the Next sale, half price, and way cheaper than even the discount sports shops. DS1 is a fan of branded shoes, such as DCs, and we always pick them up cheaply too. Ditto trainers for school.

This week I had a VIP online slot on Wednesday, one of the really early ones, and bought loads - a dress and a pair of trousers that I nearly bought a few weeks ago, but thought I couldn't justify the price; also some new jeans and teeshirts for the DCs, a gorgeous pair of curtains, a few accessories to put in the present box......I could go on.

I think you have to be selective regarding the women's clothes (there was a lot of drapy dippy-hemmed putty-coloured stuff in there this summer), but they do really nice workwear, little cotton shirts, great trousers, and I love the fact that it can all be done online.

And it's a PROPER sale; none of this "10% off" rubbish.

I would never get out of bed at 5am for it, though!

openerofjars · 17/07/2011 01:46

I know someone who went to the Next sale 6 hours after giving birth.

I have no idea what to say to her whenever we meet. But she is clearly not to be trifled with. And has crap clothes.

JockTamsonsBairns · 17/07/2011 02:02

Without a doubt, NEXT wear is utter style-less crap - and it wouldn't tempt me out of bed if they were giving it away. Who are the people who queue up outside at silly o'clock, and why?

spiderslegs · 17/07/2011 02:17

I have no idea - it flummoxes me time & time again - Why, WHY would any sane minded human queue for sales anyway - alway makes me feel slightly nauseous, fighting for cheap tat.

They've really got you by the balls haven't they?

GET A GRIP - IT'S JUST STUFF - CRAP STUFF AT THAT.

spiderslegs · 17/07/2011 02:20

& don't even get me started on the drones who are there on Boxing day waiting for their 'bargains'.

Have you not shopped enough???

I find it very difficult to enter a shop until February at the earliest.

JockTamsonsBairns · 17/07/2011 02:34

Come to think of it, I'm struggling to come up with any store which could tempt me out at such an hour for any sort of sale. But - NEXT? IT really is utter crap - at any price. You've got to hand it to them, they really seem to have convinced shoppers that it's something to be part of. But I'm really not getting the NEXT thing at all.

bandgeek · 17/07/2011 07:53

Maybe it's because I don't get up at 5am to go to the sale, but anytime I have went it's just been shite on the rails. I don't get the obsession either!

joric · 17/07/2011 10:14

Loving all the 'I only go as a last resort' posts and the 'I wouldn't get up at 5am for a next sale' posts too....
Whether you are talking about Next or Boden (or any other brand) is irrelevant - both companies are so good at marketing that they have got their (IMO) silly customers whipped up into a sale frenzy whilst they rake it in.

catgirl1976 · 17/07/2011 10:25

I woulnd't get up at 5am if my bed was on fire. Let alone to go to a sale.

Got some ok stuff for DS (particularly trousers, socks, PJs, vests and tops) oh that's everything. Wears well and good sizes (DS is a little fattie). Not in the sale tho, online. Would't do it again though as some of it is a little naff.

If looking for a good sale- Green Baby/Kids online is great. Next day delivery, loads of lovely stuff for a fiver.

JL obv the place to go for kids clothes.

bringmesunshine2009 · 17/07/2011 13:37

PS concur with wouldn't get out of bed at 5am for ANYTHING
