I know there are more important issues in the world, but if I don't rant I may explode.

MIL has just scoffed her ass off at me for buying vanilla custard from Sainsburys, saying DH would far prefer her 'homemade' custard powder bloody custard and I should put the effort in.
She heats up milk and stirs = homemade,
I heat up custard and stir = lazy cow.

Oh and DH prefers the vanilla one to her lumpy old shit anyway.

It's not about the custard really I don't even like custard that much.

She has demanded I walk past her house to try some jam but that was properly homemade TheProvincialLady

I don't understand. Obviously it is homemade! Custard powder is just powdered custard plant - how much more homemade can you get? Some people don't know anything. [hconfused]

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 15/07/2011 15:25

lolol Jeff Grin

Is homemade custard the same as créme anglaise (and yes I know I've got my accenting all wrong)?

TheProvincialLady · 15/07/2011 15:26

Are you SURE though? It wasn't Bonne Maman decanted into old cheap marmalade jars? My slipperly slope detector has detected a slippery slope.

IroningBoardForSurfBoard · 15/07/2011 15:31

no, no and thriceNO!!

custard is the shite made with powder which is predominantly corn flour, sauce a l'anglaise is made with egg yolks

If I remember rightly custard powder existed before Mr Birds invented his custard powder... The reason he invented it was because his wife was allergic to eggs so wouldn't cook him custard at home.. So he invented a way of making custard that didn't require eggs.

Either way custard is vile... Much prefere ice cream on my pudding...

And i agree - gravy granules isn't home-made gravy. Also suspect that gravy powder + meat juices isn't either... But I've never gone 'deep homemade' and done it from juices and cornflower....

For completeness someone was RAVING about this gravy...www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/other-recipes/get-ahead-gravy

But creme anglaise is a custard - like the stuff you put in a quiche (we had a thread about that a while ago - is a quiche a flan and so on - it was rivetting Grin )

Hmmmm.

Creme anglaise is a custard.

But it is not custard.

sausagerollmodel · 15/07/2011 15:39

Aaah but custard powder custard (made in a pan with milk and sugar) is more homemade than instant custard (made in a measuring jug with boiling water no? Aren't there degrees of homemadeness?

IroningBoardForSurfBoard · 15/07/2011 15:40

you cannot put creme anglaise into a quiche! it's got sugar in it Grin

it is a custard sauce

Eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cook in pan over hot water - very homemade. Even more so if you grow your own vanilla pods/keep livestock
Custard powder, milk, sugar, cook in pan - a bit homemade
Instant custard and boiling water - a teeny weeny bit homemade
Ready made custard from a tin or packet - not at all homemade.
I love threads like this! Grin

NearlyHeadlessnickelbabe · 15/07/2011 15:43

creme anglaise
custard

IroningBoardForSurfBoard · 15/07/2011 15:46

you cannot call pouring a kettle of boiling water over some powder - homemade Shock

fancy some homemade noodles?

NearlyHeadlessnickelbabe · 15/07/2011 15:48

we don't do gracy like that, though.
(i assume you're referring to bisto?)
would not say homemade, though, but we boil the veg and then use the veg water to pour over the granules. Grin

NearlyHeadlessnickelbabe · 15/07/2011 15:48

were you talking about the instant custard? Blush

never heard of it.....

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 15/07/2011 15:49

But does anyone other than Jamie feckin' Oliver and the like really bother to make custard from the eggs and stuff?

I call Birds custard homemade Blush

And wtf is this creme anglaise? Never heard of it. Where do you find it? What do you do with it?

CalmaLlamaDown · 15/07/2011 15:49

Use homemade milk from the booby for the ultimate in homadeness custardy

trumpton · 15/07/2011 16:02

Me! Me! I made eggy and vanilla custard for my MIL for mother's day . When she was a child she used to visit an aged aunt who used to make it and MIL was reminiscing about it . TA Dah ! home made custard on sticky toffee Pud and very happy MIL.

I dont even like custard ( made from powder) but it were LUSH!

Custard powder is only suitable for playing with Officially a non newtonian fluid.

frantic51 · 15/07/2011 16:13

I do too, though I confess to having a packet of the Bird's powdered stuff on the shelf for emergencies (last packet thrown out, unopened, past its sell by date) Wouldn't touch Bisto though, work of the devil! Grin

As far as my ex MIL was concerned, my homemade sherry trifle, (yes I made the trifle sponges and custard from scratch) was not a patch on my ex SIL's trifle from a Bird's packet. Confused

You'll never win with a MIL, just give up and let it run like water off a duck's back.

HarrietJones · 15/07/2011 16:13

Dh does homemade custard at Xmas. It's gorgeous but he will only make it once a year. The rest of the time we have powder.

TiggyD · 15/07/2011 16:28

I had run out of custard powder once upon a time, so I used cornflour and vanilla extract. Made lovely custard. Mmmmm, custard. Smile

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 15/07/2011 16:29

I don't understand buying custard powder (sorry!) I make 'custard' (ie vanilla or chocolate sauce) using milk, cornflour, sugar and vanilla (or chocolate - great for using up excess Easter eggs) It's like pancake mix, it's flour, milk and eggs, why do you need a mix? Isn't all just stuff that's in the cupboard anyway?

FWIW we only have custard with sponge puddings, or crumble and 'real' custard (with eggs and cream) is just too rich.

girlywhirly · 15/07/2011 16:46

I don't mind what custard it is, as long as it's not lumpy like Notso's MIL's. Introduce her to a balloon whisk!!!

FlubbaBubba · 15/07/2011 17:06

Anyone know what happened to the SIL's banoffee pie thing? (a poster on p.1 reminded me of that thread)

Someone let me know while I sit here drinking my homemade tea :o
