to think that making a spelling or punctuation mistake doesn't mean

I'm less of a person or not worthy of the advice I'm asking for?

I don't want to start a bun fight or anything. I just find it difficult to understand why some people take such offence to mistakes.

bought/brought - if you can't use them correctly I will ridicule you and refuse to offer any useful advice.

If you don't put in the correct amount of punctuation I will state you're not fit to look after my children Hmm

When did it become ok to bully someone for making mistakes like this? If they offend your overinflated sense literary justice can you not just leave the thread and not return? Someone who is posting for some kind of help could probably do without being told they are inferior people.

Rant over. Maybe.

Do people who write brought instead of bought say the wrong word as well or is just a written thing? Genuine question - to my ears they are too different to confuse either aloud or on paper and I've always thought it a strange word to mix up.

ZillionChocolate · 15/07/2011 14:17

I've heard brought and bought confused, as well as seeing it written.

I've read posts where people have claimed not to understand a word the OP's saying, that have been clear enough to me.

I sometimes think it takes more intelligence (or more something) to look beyond any errors and get the gist of a post that it does to post perfectly.

Correct by all means if it's absolutely necessary, otherwise ignore I reckon. Unless someone's up them selves, in which case their fair game. There have been a few prize "grammer" users on MN that fully deserved to have the piss ripped out of them.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 15/07/2011 14:40

lolol at my own excellent typos there Grin

superjobeespecs · 15/07/2011 14:50

sometimes when im reading a particularly punctuation free op it makes my brain hurt but i wouldnt dream of going off on one i just hope i understood it enough to give a sane-ish answer and also i love when other posters clear it up a little bit i.e sorting paragraphs and punctuation it makes it easier for me and probably lots of others too. my spelling isnt perfect at times and neither is my punctuation so i wouldnt dream of jumpin gon someones back for theirs.

one thing ive learnt is they're. thats a word i had forgotten even existed but knew i needed Grin

superjobeespecs · 15/07/2011 14:51

typos ahoy Blush proved my own point there Grin

MsTeak - sorry I'm boring you. but back at you with the 'stop calling us vipers' thing. Seriously? When did I say that? Can no one make an observation without being accused of playing the vipers card?

I think the OP of that one (of many) threads took offence to the tone of some posters. I think I would have done so too given that some people were not even attempting to help.

It does happen. I did say that I may be over sensitive to it - doesn't mean it isn't there or that I have to 'grow up' and stop being over dramatic.

usualsuspect · 15/07/2011 15:41

Its not really on to ignore a poster because they used the wrong word is it?

How up your own arse is that

TheBigJessie · 15/07/2011 15:51

Funny thing: I consistently use bought/brought in the correct context when writing, but I sometimes say the wrong one out loud, and have to rapidly correct myself.

PedigreeChump · 15/07/2011 16:06

Hmm interesting, I will listen out for spoken brought/bought mistakes, although it could be an accent thing as us Scots tend to roll our rrrrrrrs, and that's why they sound quite different to me!

tethersend · 15/07/2011 16:13

Spelling and grammar is important to me; I do notice mistakes, and I do want to correct them.

But I don't, because I would look like a massive cunt if I did.

YANBU.

usualsuspect · 15/07/2011 16:17

Do you correct the screen with a red pen tethers? Grin

I did want to correct the poster who said 'your a belend' to me though

You just don't get the same class of insult on MN any more

tethersend · 15/07/2011 16:19

Ah, I'd risk looking like a massive cunt to correct that one, usual Grin

And yes to the red pen.

supadupapupascupa · 15/07/2011 16:19

the bought/brought thing just has to stop. It's the wrong word, not a spelling or grammatical error. It's wrong and becoming really common. It makes me cringe and I will correct it whenever I see it. I'm not actually the sort of person who generally corrects people really, and things don't normally bother me. But for some reason arghhhhhhhhhhhhh!

STOP IT PEOPLE!!!!

rant over.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 15/07/2011 16:27

I remember that one usual. That was the poster that was repeatedly sending me abusive pm's. Grin

corriefan · 15/07/2011 16:28

I'm hideously pedantic but would not point out things I notice as we all make mistakes and it still gets the message across. When someone's being smug or 'holier than thou' though, it is quite satisfying to notice they're not actually as great as they're making out, but even then I wouldn't say anything, nor would I say anything about the bizarre use of apostrophes coming home on letters from school, because overall they are doing a fantastic job. It's a cheap shot pulling people up on it here, half the time it's iphone's fault anyway!

yoshilunk · 15/07/2011 16:29

I agree with tethers, I notice mistakes, they annoy me, but I wouldn't dream of pointing it out.

There is a big difference though between spelling mistakes and incorrect usage, like the bought/brought thing and you're / your. When I notice what seems like a sudden increase in a particular error I do think "is this what they're teaching these days"

for instance woman and women, 'women' seems to be used for both single and multiple. Then there's, well 'then' used where 'than' used to be in the old days. Confused

and don't get me started on 'fishes', in my day 'fish' was single and plural, who the hell decided 'fishes' was acceptable?

okay so I pointed it out, but not to anyone in particular. Grin

TheBigJessie · 15/07/2011 16:31

The "brrr" sounds just trips off the tongue!

SkipToTheEnd · 15/07/2011 16:46

yoshilunk - I blame the ring-o-roses song for the fishes thing. I'd never sung the second verse when I was younger and now it's everywhere just like 'fishes' Coincidence? I think not.... :o

In all fairness, this thread wasn't about what annoys you or not. It was about how you react to it.

I really find it hard to see how mistakes justify the attitude that is given to the poster.

Anyway, I'm feeling less stressed now. A stupid alarm had been beeping for almost 20 hours outside and I was nearing insanity. But someone's hopefully smashed it to pieces stopped it now.

OP posts:
ScrambledSmegs · 15/07/2011 16:46

I rarely post anyway but I always move on without posting if the OP is unintelligible to me. I seriously doubt anyone would notice my absence from a thread anyway.

Loose instead of lose makes my teeth itch.

AbsDuCroissant · 15/07/2011 16:51

Depends on what's going on/whose typing

every now and then you get someone on doing all txtspk posts, no grammar, xxxxxxxxxx all over the place and generally being annoying, and I would correct them. There are so many people these days who have NO clue about spelling and grammar

This must be stopped

Did anyone see this article spelling mistakes cost millions

AbsDuCroissant · 15/07/2011 16:53

Remember the person nethunner who called us the "grammer police"?
