Alright, I'm probably being VERY VERY FUCKING UNREASONABLE. But I don't care, I'm rather irritated [hsad]

Watched the new episode of Torchwood online last night, and without giving away any actual plot details I feel obliged to tell you all that Gwen has named her daughter Anwen.

[henvy]

Anwen? You mean the same name that I deliberately earmarked for future use for my beautiful yet unconceived daughter?! HOW DARE SHE!

Sorry, but I deliberately hunted for ages for a girls' name that's a) Welsh in origin and b) not very common. Having lived in Wales for 21 years (with a DP who has lived in Wales for 23 and who speaks fluent Welsh), I've NEVER heard that name before. Ever. And as far as he knows, neither has he.

So I just find it all a bit too coincidental that a few months after I decide to name any future DD of mine Anwen, they decide to pick that name out of EVERY SINGLE BLOODY NAME IN THE WORLD.

So now, not only will everyone think I've stolen it off Torchwood, but there will be bloody loads of women watching it who go "Anwen?! Oooooh what a nice name!" and will then take it for their own! It'll be as common as Teagan or Megan! (There are around 12 each in my brothers' school, so that's all I meant by common, before someone starts throwing buns [hgrin])

So yes, I'm being very unreasonable. And I know it. But it doesn't stop me from wanting to hunt down the writers and gut them like fish [hangry] [hbiscuit]

I like to think I went for option 5 - choose something you absolutely love while also taking into account what is currently popular so that child hopefully doesn't become 'firstname inital of surname' at school.

I did, for example, like Isobel but it's soooo common round here at the moment that there are 3 in DS's preschool class of 24.

bemused anyone actually agrees your name "stolen"
even more bemused you actually care

shuckleberryfinn · 10/07/2011 21:42

Many moons ago I wrote anti-virus software. One day I had a DS who was given a lovely, unusual name but not off the wall. Fast forward a v. short time (less than a week) and a new virus arrived on the scene - guess what it was called? I was sick of people saying that DS was named after a virus!
Still have the headlines though "XXX storms the world" :)

scottishmummy · 10/07/2011 21:57

torchwood is nowhere now.would worry about its cultural impact or longevity,it wont have any

siilk · 10/07/2011 22:03

Hate to say it, but we discounted Anwen as a name for a girl, as it is way too common around here. The school role is full of them. Mind you I do live in Welsh speaking Wales.

Tortu · 10/07/2011 22:04

Ha ha! I've just stolen it for my unconceived daughter. Brilliant.

EricNorthmansMistressOfPotions · 10/07/2011 22:21

I know a welsh girl called Dwywen (sp?) which sounds just gorgeous in her accent.

Tchootnika · 10/07/2011 22:25

Delyth?
That's a lovely name, IMO (only know of 2! Ever!!)
But then I don't live in Wales...

MrBloomsNursery · 10/07/2011 22:36

What about Bronwyn? I'm sure there was one in Neighbours back in the 80's-90's Grin

scottishmummy · 10/07/2011 22:37

bethan/bethany like those but v popular

MummyTigger · 10/07/2011 22:45

I will say this post was partly a joke, for anyone actually taking me seriously.

But I feel a little irritated nonetheless lol! It's like someone else has posted - I loved the name Kate, but now can never call my daughter anything to that effect because she'll just get raised eyebrows and "Born after 2011 were you??"

At least Torchwood is relatively small-fry nowadays. Still pisses me off though. They must have hacked my phone!
