Was this the rudest cold caller ever?

I was at home looking after toddler while husband slept off his night shift (small one-level apartment)

Phone goes and it's a marketing call from Sony, obviously from overseas (from someone called Dayan, so am thinking South India, or likely Colombo), asking if I had a Sony TV. I briskly said I did, bought when I lived in Asia but that I was sorry, I couldn't talk now as I was busy putting child for a nap and didn't want to answer questions (he was reeling off my address to me). I then clicked off.

Phone goes again. It's him. I repeated that I couldn't speak as people sleeping and noise will wake them. He continued to ask for my postcode. I said no and clicked off.

Now you'd think I'd turn my landline off. But since moving back to the country just picked up any old phone and cannot for the life of me work out how to mute it or switch the damn thing off. Really, I'm good normally with electronics but this has a plug I can't reach and you can't mute it on the actual phone itself. Plus I was in a panic trying to run away from all the sleeping people so they wouldn't wake up.

He calls. Says he 'doesn't care about sleepers, I will keep calling 'ma'am' until you give me your postcode'. I click off.

This ridiculous farrago goes on 20 times with him calling back to shout at me that he 'will get my address!' and me saying "no!" and clicking off.

Eventually I go out into the corridor and chuck the phone on the roof!

Are calls from abroad outside of the TPS jurisdiction? We're on TPS but still seem to get Indian junk calls.

I'd love to block incoming international calls but our family are abroad so they wouldn't be able to get through. :(

When we had our landline a cold caller from stanna stairlifts rang,he was quite persistant and continued to do his speel informing me that I may need one in the future, I told him that if they rang again I could guarantee that some one their end would DEFINITELY be in need of one. He told me there was no need to get shirty and put the phone down on me Grin
I also think he put a curse on me, guess who is having a hip operation in the next couple of weeks Grin

AmyStake · 10/07/2011 21:34

Aaand I just read that back to myself and realised what a stupid question I asked. Haha.

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 11/07/2011 00:04

re who cuts the phonecall off: if you made the call, you can keep the line open if you don't hang up. If you received the call, even if you hang up time and time and time again it won't cut the call if the call-maker still has the line open.

I know this because of the number of times people's mobiles have called me from their pockets; and also from the extremely memorable time that I was on call and one ward phoned me and then didn't replace the handset correctly, keeping the line open. I had to use my mobile to phone the switchboard of the hospital to get them to phone the ward to ask them to hang the bloody thing up properly so the line was freed up.

Unless things have changed dramatically since digitsation, that is.

myob that was me who used pass the phone to my then 3yr old. Oh the fun I used to have!

SchrodingersMew · 11/07/2011 15:59

I just got one of those bloody calls!!

Refused to tell me who he was unless I confirmed who he was looking for, I told him I was registered with TFP and he starts putting on some little girls voice and taking the piss out of me! Angry

Asked to speak to his manager and he starts with the "Oh, I am the manager".

I am not happy.

Eventually I put loud rap music on and sat the phone beside the speakers.

SchrodingersMew · 11/07/2011 16:13

Also, just realised it was from the same company who I mentioned had called me earlier in the thread!

How the hell can I get him to bugger off before he starts with the constant calling again!

frazzle26 · 11/07/2011 16:23

I just tell them that my mum isn't in Grin

I've not had a bad experience with telephone callers but I've been shouted at several times in the street by people trying to sell me something.

One time a bloke asked me if I wanted to buy a student rag mag for charity and I just said "Erm, no thanks," and walked off. He yelled "Fucking ignorant bitch!" at me. Nice. (I suspected it was one of those scam not actually anything to do with a university or charity mags that were around at the time in any event, and his reaction only seem to support that).

Another time a man stopped my friend and me "Wow, you have amazing hair, where do you get it done?" Then gave us this whole spiel about buying a £50 voucher - then and there - for some Mayfair salon where "all the celebrities go" and at the end we just said "Na, no thanks," and started to walk away and he said, loudly "Well I thought you might be fucking BORING anyway!"

Another example, not really abusive like the other two examples, but still stuck with me: a woman was trying to sell me a voucher for a beauty salon and her jaw dropped almost to the floor when I said I'd never had a facial. I was 25 at the time. "What do you mean you've never had a facial?" Like I'd said I'd never eaten toast or something. Hmm

You could always ask him if he would like to join you in your fight to free mankind from their slavery to the Babylonian Brotherhood, the blood-sucking, child-sacrificing, Satanic, extraterrestrial lizards that have taken human form and control us all, and would he like to join your group? The lizards must be stopped before it is too late. And does he know that George W Bush, Queen Elizabeth and Bob Hope are lizard people. You are taking a small team to LA, where you intend to infiltrate their subterrainian kingdom and kill them all. You will probably all be killed, but you will be remembered forever as the saviours of Mankind and he can be part of it. Does he WANT to remain enslaved to the Lizard People?

I bet he never calls again.

Pendeen · 11/07/2011 16:28

After dozens of cold calls, if I hear an asian accent I just put down the phone.

SchrodingersMew · 11/07/2011 16:28

Frazzle The last time I told him the person wasn't in he wanted to speak to he called constantly every couple of minutes ridiculing me. Hmm

Insomnia We got the hair people in the street 3 times this week! Talking about photohoots and posh hair cuts.

SchrodingersMew · 11/07/2011 16:30

January My Gran has to call from work sometimes and because it's in a hospital the number comes up as withheld so we couldn't put a block on it. :(

Magnificent You scare me a bit but, :o

Insomnia11 · 11/07/2011 16:30

basically no-one with a withheld phone number can get through, very very rare we get any sort of cold calls now.

It doesn't help if you are trying to get a job though, as recruitment consultants and quite a few companies have withheld numbers. Also my husband wouldn't be able to phone home.

I don't answer if it's a withheld number though unless I'm expecting someone to call from one.

I don't mind as long as they aren't rude. I am better at avoiding them these days though :)

SchrodingersMew · 11/07/2011 16:33

I don't normally mind them either but these guys are relentless! We got hounded by one were very polite and then another one stopped us after walking no more than 3 metres. Shock

ThumbsNoseAtSnapewitch · 12/07/2011 04:57

Schrodingers, perhaps the loud rap music will have put him off? If not, try just constantly yelling "fuck off fuck off fuck off" down the phone over him until he hangs up. If THAT doesn't work tell him you're recording the call for the police who will be after him for harassment.

differentnameforthis · 12/07/2011 08:31

I'd have out it in the washing machine, or fridge, or oven (not turned on obv) but left him on the line...he soon would have got bored talking to himself.

SchrodingersMew · 12/07/2011 11:06

Thumbs He hasn't phoned back yet! :o

Guess he didn't like Eminem much. :)
