to think this seems to be following exactly the same pattern as the mens team and the U21s in the euros. Absolutely outclassed and completely bereft of any technical abilities when compared to continental teams.

I have never heard 'handbags' for a men's game!

Would love to, though.

Or are you teasing me?

mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 18:27

No worries linerunner. Was suprised there wasn't a thread on it already.

AwesomePan · 09/07/2011 18:28

England should just hold possession and play the game out.

hang on tho'.....it's an English team....

LineRunner · 09/07/2011 18:28

Good god, all the football I have watched in my life and I didn't know about men's handbags.

You live and learn.

I don't listen to R5 LIve, maybe that's why.

mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 18:28

Nope, not teasing. Said constantly. It's to take the piss out of the peacoking posers who square up but never do anything. It's an abbreviation of the phrase "handbags at dawn" which was used to describe the situations in question. i.e. they're acting like they're going to fight to the death but in reality it's more like handbags at dawn than pistols.

AwesomePan · 09/07/2011 18:29

no tease LR - it's fun to see the R5 text. Big, pink handbags icon.

TheFalcon · 09/07/2011 18:34

Handball there.

mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 18:36

"Handball there."

For the block tackle when it bounced up? I wouldn't have given that.
Now the handball in the build up to the goal was as deliberate and blatant as you like?

OP posts:
LineRunner · 09/07/2011 18:43

You're right, MayorQ. How are we winning this?

AwesomePan · 09/07/2011 18:44

Damn.

mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 18:44

finish

OP posts:
TheFalcon · 09/07/2011 18:44

Shit. Good goal though.

worraliberty · 09/07/2011 18:45

I thought she was doing her team mate's laces up for her then....

mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 18:48

The keeper diving way past the post when the ball was already in the goal on the other side did make me laugh however. Lovely finish

OP posts:
AwesomePan · 09/07/2011 18:49

yes, you can see that attempt save appearing on youtube some time soon..

mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 18:49

FFS Hope Powell screaming "long. Hit it over the top.",

OP posts:
CheerMum · 09/07/2011 18:50

they look knackered

mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 18:53

yup. they looked wrecked. Don't know why they brought on 2 defenders for fire-fighting defending when your forward is clearly shattered.

And FFS she's still just screaming "hit it over the top." No wonder they look completely bereft of ideas and tactics. I get pissed off when I hear youth coaches shouting that shit because it is what breeds technically deficient players who are athletes first and footballers second.
It's why the cloaest player England have produced to something like Xavi or Riquelme in the past 20 odd years is Paul Scholes and he was completely misused in the England set-up.
Absolutely appalling attitude to have for a national team.

AwesomePan · 09/07/2011 18:58

would think penalties will be a high-scoring affair.

mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 19:14

Kelly Smith is crocked. WTF was the manager thinking subbing off both her fullbacks to give 2 players their world cup debuts.
Also telling them to run down the clock 2 minutes in to extra-time.
Another 2 errors from the keeper. Should have given away a penalty there.

OP posts:
AwesomePan · 09/07/2011 19:18

the subs at 13 mins left would have taken at least 10 of those mins to catch up with the rythm of the game. and yes, running the game down in these circs is ridiculous. "over the top" - to whom exactly??

  • I don't speak as a coach, just as an ex-player at a good level -
mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 19:28

Could be interesting to see some of the England players try and hit their penalties. They're walking wounded at the moment

OP posts:
LineRunner · 09/07/2011 19:30

Penalties. I have to go and watch this on my 'good telly'.

mayorquimby · 09/07/2011 19:33

I honestly don't know what to expect.
both the goalies have looked awful, half the england team are broken and the shooting hasn't exactly been brilliant so far.
